Spright monsters all have below 2000 atk, and rely on having a lvl/rank/link 2 already on board to special summon themselves. So Slifer will automatically stop their normal summon, and while they have ways of getting another 2 out in defense position to get around this (starter, nimbles, frogs, etc) they still can't use any link monsters or attack it in the battle phase with Centaurea, so their outs are limited (idk what except Smashers or out-of-engine cards would work.)

Not that he had much he could’ve done if he’d summoned in defense. He had no sprights in hand to summon after getting ronin on the field, no link-1 monsters exist that could get ronin back in the GY to do his thing again. And even if he could, the link 1 and Elf would be killed by Slifer immediately.

Wait, I just remembered Slifer's effect only works on attack position monsters. So technically, the opponent misplayed.
Now here's the issue: If they Link summoned, Slifer can still crush the link monster.
There was just nothing he could do. The Virus makes him get rid of his entire hand, and slifer just pops anything summoned in attack position. Since he was playing sprites and most link 1 monsters are under 2k, it would get pop and even if he put it in defense, he has 3 monsters and one of them has 6k attack, with it raising to 7k on his turn. No way at all he was going to survive.
No, the opponent definitely dead.
The virus destroy every other monster in hand, and slifer will destroy any link monster they try to summon. And no 5 summons, so niburu dead card

Slifer/Osiris is the most underrated boss card in the game, I swear.
Slifer really do be an insane floodgate. If you don't have a way to out it without summoning, people are often straught fucked.

Seeing ddv clap spright decks is always satisfying.
I remember having a virus deck i called plague. Deck devastation, pandemic, and crush card. Running in a mostly dark fiend deck. I was somehow able to get all three at once off, just leaving it up to pick for me to draw something to damage my opponent.
Slifer debut was my favorite duel in the show.
Blew my mind.
I was trapped in a virus loop with a Labyrinth deck. He'll activate virus with the trap card that allows him to copy its effect and nuked both my spells and traps. But his Labyrinth card allowed him to just keep reusing it until he had 4 different virus effects in play per turn.
But he wouldn't attack me neither. Eventually just kept sacrificing his 8☆ Labyrinth and then brought it back with the field card until I decked out 😢
now ima go dismantle everything to play that deck

This duel reminds me of when I faced those four clones in World Championship 2009. Most people play a cheap deck against those four while relying on luck, but the four strategies are almost unanimously destroyed by Removed From Play cards. The Lightsworn duelist was a treat. I went first and got either Banisher of Light, Macro Cosmos, or Dimensional Fissure on the field with their effect active, and the Lightsworn duelist milled his deck out trying to get somewhere! The zombie duelist had a little potential, but Pyramid Turtle was worthless because its effect must activate in the graveyard. The final dark duelist was much the same way; without the graveyard, "Dark" monsters aren't worth much.
The biggest challenge was the Ice Barrier duelist, but I had Golden Homunculus (Level 5) on the field, and he activated Gravity Bind. As it turns out, he won't use his bounce back effect if he can't attack, and his dragon was Level 6. Thankfully, I had Gren Maju da Eiza (Level 3), and it got stronger with every card removed from play. So what if he bounced it back! I could re-summon it without cost! The only luck required was to win the toss up and go first. Lightsworn and Ice Barrier might cream you if they go first.
That was just... *EVIL!*

Slifer’s effect is surprisingly good. A lot of decks need smaller bodies to go into there extra deck monsters and they can’t exactly do that if they keep getting popped.
