Was immediately drawn by the deep quality of that mezzo voice, I had to look up where it came from! Of course it is Cecilia Bartoli 😍. This aria is beautiful.
Really, I keep getting nice surprises from the Stranger Things soundtracks, love it!

It's an aria from the opera "Nina, ossia la pazza per amore", music by Giovanni Paisiello. Arias are usually known by their first words, in this case, "Il mio ben quando verra", which means When will my loved one come?. The singer is the well known Cecilia Bartoli, mezzo-soprano.

Interestingly, the opera that this aria is from is an Italian translation of a French opera of the same name written four years earlier, but the show mentions details specific to the French opera, apparantly confusing the two

Great to see Paisiello get some recognition! Nina was a pastoral melodrama, not quite Paisiello's forte but it's one of his best opera's non the less.

    Il mio ben quando verrà
    A veder la mesta amica?
    Di bei fior s'ammanterà
    La spiaggia aprica.
Ma nol vedo, e il mio ben,
    Ahimè! Non vien?
    Mentre all'aure spiegherà
La sua fiamma, i suoi lamenti,
    Miti augei v'insegnerà
    Più dolci accenti.
    Ma non l'odo. E chi l'udì?
    Ah! il mio bene ammutolì.
Tu cui stanca omai già fe'
    Il mio pianto, eco pietosa,
Ei ritorna e dolce a te
    Chiede, chiede la sposa.
    Pian, mi chiama; piano ahimè!
No, non mi chiama, oh Dio, non c'è!

      TERRIBLE translation!

    • @Obi-Sav-Kenobi
      @Obi-Sav-Kenobi Рік тому

@@wonder-womyn Sorry, Wonder, but it is not a translation at all, this is the exact lyric from 1789, then it is not "modern" itaian language, but it is written with poetic license. For example "Ma non l'odo" we actually say "Ma non lo sento".

I looked this up by the song title, and got other singers. I wondered if I had the right song since they sounded so much different.
