R.I.P. Waylon. I had the pleasure of working with him in 1969 at the Bandar in Ventura ca. I was playing lead guitar with a Husband & Wife Team, Del & Sue Smart. The club was owned by Johnny & Jonie Mosby. We were bring in monthly guest stars,so I was fortunate to be a part of that scene, Thanks Larry
I've been developing a real appreciation for some country music, especially artists like Waylon, because it's masculine. It's not this wussy, screaming, pop-culture, flavor-of-the-moment, stuff. A man singing like a man. A voice that sounds like the man who owns it actually has a spine. Cool, man! Praise the Lord.
I strongly maintain that any song by Waylon would be the topmost plinth of excellence. Any unfortunate person coming after Waylon singing the like song, would be hard pressed to approach him in steer briliance.
Happy Birthday Waylon!!! You would have turned 80 today 6/15/2017. You were & still are the best! Your music lives on. You are missed & you never will be forgotten! Love you Hoss! Whoop whoop!
Waylon is the best singer ever. I have been listening to him for over 40 years. Have never heard a better voice and guitar picker. Gosh I miss him! Thanks for posting.
I can tell a little bit of difference in his voice between his younger self and older self, but this is his younger self with his older voice. It's mind blowing
Waylon looking like this is so impressive and his guitar playaing is second to none. Of all the versions of this song, I like the best. He is so down to earth but what talent!
Me too. Because of Kris' death I'm checking out different artists. This is great, up there with the The Grateful Dead and Gordon Lightfoot. All very different, but great to listen to.
There never was and never will be another Waylon Jennings the legend one of the best country singers ever to walk on stage handsome too! R. I. P Waylon
Telling by hairstyle he had, this about the time I briefly met Waylon in Scottsdale, Az…night club….name, I think JDs , might have been a bit before this….Good old Honkey Tonk times….. Riverside……Waylon had a Great Voice…..🤠👍
Love all of Waylon’s performances, especially these earlier ones, his voice is superb. I watched the Nashville Rebel last night, fantastic. Worth the watch if you get a chance. I wish I had discovered Waylon, Johnny, Merle, Glen and many others so much earlier - just to have seen them on stage, luckily u tube deliveries these gems.
This is pure class and finesse. Look at the drummer putting everything he has into it but with restraint, the way he imitates the windshield wipers when Waylon sings that part.
I used to listen to classic rock my mom loved country music George Jones and Loretta Lynn was her favorite but she'd listen and liked them all she died in 2001 at age 59 of colon cancer I miss every I'm 59 now seems like country music sounds different to me now but when I was younger I really listened to it all my life Mom would play it and sing alone with she could sing good
Waylon's book had such a profound effect on me, the more I got to know about his personal triumphs, the more I appreciated his artistry. Waylon's biggest flaw? He always thought he was not a very good guitar player!? Exactly what does Waylon consider good? His image was one thing, but in truth a humble and good man. And man could he sing!
Tommy Petersen You got it! The Book is absolutely amazing. I loved the man and respected his work. Even more so, after reading his words. What a hell of a man.
Brian French nice to find another Waylon fan! Hearing this it just astounds me that it took him so long to truly break out. That voice was so recognizable as was his playing. Waylon ( as you know) was never comfortable with the outlaw image... Which really does make him a true outlaw). Favorite part of the book has to be either sitting with shooter in the restaurant or him meeting the blind girl. As you said, a hell of a man.
+Tommy Petersen a lot of years ago i went to drive in in welland ontario and saw a movie called nashville rebel. there was a song called green river. i instantly loved the song. about a month later i went to ottawa ontario to visit my grandfather and play some golf. i read in the paper that there was a guy called waylon jennings playing a little nightclub called the chamberlain room in the vicinity. i couldn't get there fast enough. he put on one hell of a show. he had broken his ankle and had to do the show sitting down but he looked just like the guy in this video, short hair cowboy shirt. not like the look he had later in his life. always liked him and watched his career grow almost from the beginning. miss him alot.
+Denis Lessard WOW! so jealous that you got to see him live. I know he came here to Toronto a few times but that was when I was too embarrassed/stupid to admit I liked country music. Of course Waylon was not just country, he simply was MUSIC regardless of genre. Around the time you saw him would have been when he got into a bar fight at the Horseshoe Tavern here. The story is in his book and it is hilarious!!!
Joplin, Rimes, Pink and all others who have murdered this iconic song, listen carefully to how Mr. Jennings sings it. The way Kris meant it to be sung.
Joplin murdered this song? Hmm. I'll say this: A classic like this can be done any number of ways by a variety of artists, and its a tribute to the song that that's the case. I don't think there's one way to interpret a great song. Finally, Kris, himself, loved Janis's version: He said it brought him to tears and he listened to it over and over again.
What a singer and what a guitarist !!! He reckons he wasn't a good guitarist , but let the people be the judge of that !!! He was absolutely fantastic !! I love this guy 😍♥️❤️
3 of my favourites growing up listening to Waylon Jennings were: Me and Bobby McGee, Ramblin Man, and Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys. I had purchased the hardcover book (Waylon: Tales of My Outlaw Dad) autographed by Author,Terry Jennings a few weeks ago and already half way through reading, i’m still learning things I never knew about Waylon. This is a must read book hands down for both old and young to learn about one the greatest Artists of his time. Order your copy of the book today, you will not be disappointed.
In my DJ days, back in 1968, Waylon came up to me backstage and asked if there was a coffee shop nearby. I told him there was so he said let's go get a cup. As we were walking out the door, Tex Ritter hollered "Wait for me" and came with us. There I was, in a booth with Waylon and Tex and I didn't say a word the whole time. Waylon was upset because Chet Atkins wouldn't let him do things his way and Tex tried to convince him to relax, he was making good money and on the good tours. Actually, just listening to Tex Ritter talk was the biggest thrill. That deep South accent with his booming voice way like honey in my ears.
What a voice, what a guitar picker, a man who fought the system and won,by doing things his way, there will sadly never be another one like waylon he was simply untouchable.
Brilliant. Thanks for posting! best country song ever? Impossible to answer...we still have roger miller and hank snow to discuss...oh me...Cash, Williams 1, Williams 3...
I loved him 40 years ago and I still think today that he is the best voice I have heard. Not bad to look at either. R.I.P. Waylon I miss you terriubly.
Waylon has got a great voice different but in my book no one can beat Elvis but then again a matter of opinion and personal taste Elvis Waylon and Roy I listen to them every day
Waylon is the BEST..love all of them.. nobody can sing He stopped loving her today like George Jones, but Waylon is Waylon....don't make them like they used to... Who's gonna fill their shoes

Waylon had the perfect baritone voice. He is a legend and will forever ride the top deck.

That VOICE! That SOUL! That HAIR! Waylon was the real deal.
Those Dimples!!
He was very handsome in this performance.
My favourite country singer ever. A beautiful man!
Thank you Lord for blessing us with Waylon , take care of him.
I've been developing a real appreciation for some country music, especially artists like Waylon, because it's masculine. It's not this wussy, screaming, pop-culture, flavor-of-the-moment, stuff. he is the best. but billy joe shaver is very good, as song writer and performer BJS is the winner, voice goes to waylon
check out some john prine
Waylon was one of the best. I met him in Chandler, AZ just a couple of years before he died. I am now 62, and a lifelong fan.
Nothing wrong with Janis' cover. Imho. Lucy

Max Mendoza Glad you agree with me Max.
I can tell a little bit of difference in his voice between his younger self and older self, but this is his younger self with his older voice. It's mind blowing
True, it was right before the outlaw phase began.
Young Mooney too, what a treat, Thanks!!!
waylon sings so pure and moon backing him on steel makes it that much better
He was one of the greatest singers and guitar players! WOW
Waylon looking like this is so impressive and his guitar playaing is second to none. Of all the versions of this song, I like the best. He is so down to earth but what talent!
Waylon and the Outlaws......some of the best country ever heard!
Not only was Waylon an amazing singer, I've never seen anybody else play the guitar like he did
Can't belive I just heard this version by Waylon now. Totally a agree with all about his powerful singing and awesome guitar.
Me too. Because of Kris' death I'm checking out different artists. This is great, up there with the The Grateful Dead and Gordon Lightfoot. All very different, but great to listen to.
The absolute best version of this song! Waylon was an incredible singer and nobody picked a guitar like Waylon did.

Waylon at his best. Come to think of it, he was always at his best. Thanks for this video. Superb.

Telling by hairstyle he had, this about the time I briefly met Waylon in Scottsdale, Az…night club….name, I think JDs , might have been a bit before this….Good old Honkey Tonk times….. Riverside……Waylon had a Great Voice…..🤠👍
By far the best version yet. Waylon has a way to make each song his own. A damn good musician
I knew Waylon at JD's in Scottsdale in '64-65. Man do I miss him.
Know where I can find a photo of his name on the marquee from back in the day?
Love all of Waylon’s performances, especially these earlier ones, his voice is superb. I watched the Nashville Rebel last night, fantastic. Worth the watch if you get a chance. I wish I had discovered Waylon, Johnny, Merle, Glen and many others so much earlier - just to have seen them on stage, luckily u tube deliveries these gems.
I also love his early performances. Although I also like his performances during the outlaw period and after that, this is something extra.
This is pure class and finesse. Look at the drummer putting everything he has into it but with restraint, the way he imitates the windshield wipers when Waylon sings that part.

Waylon could sing any song wrote and make a hit out of it. I love his music and yes he was a great guitar player.

Nobody sounds like Waylon for both his singing and guitar playing.

Also read Waylon's autobiography and his wife Jessi's book an outlaw and a lady, both really good reads.
The best for sure..The man ,the music and his convictions..

I love Waylon's version of this song. ♥️=w=♥️
I have been to see Waylon at least 40 times from his begenning, until his end. Got to meet him & had dinner with him, in Poplar Bluff Mo.
Dude id shake YOUR hand and never wash it! That sounds epic.
Sounds amazing dude, very lucky!
I’m envious too!
What was he like at dinner, what year was it and what kind of impression did he give you as the type of guy he was?
It is great to see this video has 1.6M views that is encouraging

Great stuff...back when the telecaster was new...
Outstanding version.......
His voice honestly just got better and better with age. Wonderful to hear all of his songs!
Best cover of the song I have ever heard. Almost as good as Janis Joplin's. Awesome in its own right.
Almost good as Janis joplins ? Nothing beats this, but to each his own.
@@gracemacdonald667 I’ve since discovered Roger Miller’s cover and it’s my favorite now.
Waylon is one of my all time favorite Country singers
RIP Waylon............ first 911 happened and then Waylon passed not much longer after that.....
One hell of a performance! Man, this is good!
R.I.P Waylon... I would like to think that you and Buddy have re-united, and are up there putting on one heavenly concert...

Country musics original modern day outlaw. R.I.P. Waylon Arnold Jennings
Fantastic version. With all due respect to the others, the last 30 seconds of this one seals it as the best imo.
+satchmoradio Right you are.... Nothing like an ear full of Walon guitar.
I've lost count of the times I've watched this video can't beat it and you're right the last 30sec is brilliant
Waylon saying “Take it, Moon.” = my moment of inevitability.
Country and Western badassery was always preceded by the words, "pick it, Moon"
MY OWN PERSONAL OPINION HE WAS THE BEST OF ALL COUNTRY SINGERS
Mind-blowing! 👉😍💓🌹
