I love my Astra Convertible, such a great car for not a lot of money.
I've got the 2.0 turbo version and it is a quick car. I've also got a 2.2 litre which I had before the turbo. Sadly its just sat doing nothing.
My wife also has a 2.2 coupe Astra, which is our less impractical car.

Hi There Geoff, I have a 2002 Astra Bertone 2.2 I've owned the car for I think nearly 7 years, However I only paid £350 for mine it came with a private plate, and a new engine that had only done 60k.
At Present my Astra has only done 149500 miles I believe when I bought it had only done around 142k -144k so its been parked up a lot of the time and sadly vandalized a few times Aerial and drivers door case and most recently damage to the bonnet.
Forgot mention it came with damage on the rear quarter and cracked rear bumper which a bumper was supplied with car.
I personally believe if I had my own place with a cool garage that I could keep my cars safe I'd really spend money on it.
Last week or so for I think the first time ever in my ownership I had the roof cleaned It came out amazingly clean I just loved watching all the dirt n grime that came out of it..
So going into required jobs on the car, I do believe it would benefit from a rear box on exhaust system.
The rear bumper needs replacing and rear quarter needs doing it lets the cars general appearance down.
The only other thing Id love to do is source a full black leather interior, oh and possibly put 4 good brand tyres on.
Within my car collection I have a Mercedes CLK 320 again a 52 plate car, I only paid £1200 back 7 years ago when I turned 52,and last November 2022 I bought a Vauxhall Astra Twin Top 1.9 CDTI Design and also own Audi A6 2.7 TDI Estate Auto 2007 plate What a car full luxury and I sadly feel I love the car more than my others. Given my disabilities.
My last vehicle and the newest of the lot is my 2014 old shape transit LWB High Top van again its not done that much mileage around 130k and its the reason my other 2 main convertibles have been neglected because I financed it and my actual plans never really worked out, but time will tell. Anything I do in future is purely based on a hobby.
Just one ask...? What are your views on My idea of purchasing a beautiful XJ8 4.0 LWB Jaguar 2001 year plate..?
Did have a Jaguar XJ8 before and while in my 1st year trying to make ends meet I sadly lost my car over a £600 quid bill which Id like to add I had paid £360 of this bill towards the garage, My other cars was a Vauxhall Vectra 1.9 CDTI with a few miles on its BELT 219.998 didn't make the 220.000 and 5000 miles I had hoped, had some great journeys in this car great at carrying lots of gear in it.. My other little car my "pocket rocket" MGF se in Wedgewood blue it was actually the lowest mileage car of my fleet at just 82.000 miles..
The 2019 or 2018 MOT cost me £635 to renew its 12 months and I just felt that the same issues would be flagged up. Very few minor issues like the boot release for the bonnet which stretched and the door not closing in winter (pet hate)and regular flat battery..
I saw no future for it because it never came with solid service history.. So I literally gave it scrap guy free... Lucky for him..
I am actually called Tim and I am a guy heading for 60 years of age.. Future plans Bungalow with great drive and nice size garage and keep my vehicles 100% safe and buy a couple more cars to add to the fleet MGF SE / AND TF 135 sprint oh Two Jaguars the one mentioned and a Alum bodied one say 2007/08 plate.. Sovereign.
My car collection is valued around £5000 (purchased prices)not the van that's £5k +
Totally agree on your question, Astra Bertone convertible Is most aggreebly one of the nicer convertibles to own And I do love a few of the colour shades they come in..

Had one of these as my first car. Previous owners had taken very good care of it for the best part of 10 years and I endeavoured to do the same. Ended up selling it in immaculate condition so I could get a rusty old MX-5 once insurance prices dropped to realistic levels for me. The new owner apparently crashed and wrote it off within a few months of buying it... Needless to say I was gutted after all the care I had given it. I often wonder how long I would have had it if I wasn't so fixated on getting an MX-5. It sure was a sluggish tank to drive in comparison though!

You can sit children in the back with the roof open. I have never heard of that restriction before. Certainly ok in the UK and France. The car will seat four adults. It's a good size. It works well with kids in child seats as there is plenty of room for their sticking out straight legs!

    • @TheMirrorGuy
      @TheMirrorGuy 10 місяців тому

The car is a four seater, with four seat belts. So only two can sit in the back legally.

Bought ours in 2004 when it was a year old from Network Q. I had been in the car business for a little while and for a great deal. It had 13k miles on the clock. Now it has 73k. Inexpensive to service and for parts. Done it myself for the past 12 years.
We have the 2.2 all singing and dancing model. Bought as we needed a four seater that could for child's seats in the back without them having their legs crushed by the front seats. At the time looked at the Audi. Far too expensive. Same with the facelift Saab. BMW just silly money. Megane too small and front screen raked too close to your face. What Car rated it at the time as the best value convertible.
Regularly get 34mpg, more on a long motorway run.

      @@GeoffBuysCars We still have it.
I forgot to mention in my first posting about the size of the boot. For a convertible, it's very large. Plus, if you are going on a long journey and don't plan to lower the roof, you can utilise the space where the roof folds into. It's a waterproof area that will hold quite a lot.
The roof failed to open a while ago and it took me a while to sort the problem. Turned out one of the hydraulic hoses had split. (There are ten of them). Identified the hose, which was a little difficult as the number had disintegrated (they are all different lengths). Found a company in Exeter that supplied one for about £50. Topping the hydraulic oil up is a little difficult as the hole is between the minimum and maximum levels. Fortunately, we have a sloping drive, so jacked up the rear offside wheel until it's high enough to fill and fit the plug.
Resetting the roof was a little difficult. I have an OP-Com which cleared the fault, but the roof wouldn't reset and the code would reappear. I assumed it was the roof ECU which I sent off to be tested. It came back with no faults found, but also with detailed instructions on how to reset the roof. Wind it open with the key and set it back under the cover. Clear the fault code, then operate the roof.
I'd like to get the car wrapped as the paint is tired in places, but can't find anyone to do it. Maybe the model is too old for the vinyl cutting machines.
It's not worth a lot of money, but to replace it for a newer car to the same spec seems a waste of time and money. Maybe it will be a collectors car if I can keep it long enough!
The only new parts have been those that wear such as brakes and track rod ends. Two new ABS hubs, which weren't dear and a new windscreen after it cracked. Tyres when required.
The wiper linkage seizes up every couple of years. I take it apart, give it a good clean and use a fine emery paper on the swivels, then grease and reassemble.
The head unit has packed up twice. I might see if someone can refurbish it as the multiplay CD is useful.
I cleaned the hood using Autoglym's hood cleaner and reproofing kit. It came up very well. I will do it again at some point as it is obvious now where I missed a couple of places.

In our opinion, this car far exceeded our expectations. It's done us proud for for 18 years (Today! I just looked at the delivery slip). I would love another and would seriously consider another ragtop like this, but what's the point in changing, What extra would I get for more money, We will keep it as long as we can.
