Bagua's Masters Meeting, Beijing 1993

- Video tape of some of the demonstrations of the 1st meeting of the Guójì Bāguà Zhǎng Liányì Huì (International Bagua Zhang Friendship Association).
This meeting took place in Beijing on December 24-27 1993.
This was probably the greatest assembly of bagua masters in recent history. Many major branches of the Bagua family were represented, and a number of the top practitioners of the time attended this gathering. Many of these masters have since passed on.
I am cutting most of this video off, please watch the translated and annotated version on the Mushin Martial Culture channel. He deserves your views for the work he has done making clear historically accurate information available to the martial arts community.

This entire video has been released the Mu Shin Martial Culture UA-cam channel, run by Hebei Xingyi and Liang style Bagua Zhang inheritor Byron Jacobs, with subtitled English translation of commentary and additional background information on performers as well as supplementary historical information.
He is also releasing an excellent series of videos on the history of Bagua Zhang.
He has also done a few videos on the real history of Shuai Jiao.
The misinformation commonly circulated about the history of Shao Jiao has been bothering me for years. I'd long hoped someone would tackle the issue and Byron Jacobs has done an excellent job clearly laying out the origins and history of the art while including many historical sources.
He's also got a great series on the history of the Shaolin temple that are well worth watching.
I would recommend you watch this film on his channel and while you're there take a look at his other videos, especially the videos he has made on various aspects of Chinese martial arts history.

I really didn't do any research on this video and I was too lazy to even record the performers.
If you watched this video here I'd suggest you go to Byron's page. He has lived in Beijing for years and is a fifth generation Baguazhang practitioner under the Ling Zhenpu lineage. He has met a lot of the senior Bagua teachers in Beijing and translated this entire video along with adding in biographical information about the more notable teachers in it.

This is wonderful, I had no idea this video existed! Who was the tall Western guy towards the end of the video? I saw a lot of Bagua masters that I know well. This is a great resource. Does anyone where 朱家务Zhujiawu is and if there is anything in Dong Haichuan's honor there now?

He can be seen sitting at the desk at about 0:32 (leftmost fellow). I think it's him at the close-up at 0:47 as well. Might be him at 6:45 but again, not absolutely sure (I thought I heard his name by the narrator, but my Chinese is not good enough to follow).

Are all of these forms memorized?
Yeah probably, but there are a few things you should keep in mind. This is a public demonstration and especially given the time period it's likely at least some of them may have made changes to mark the forms.
Also this video shows practitioners from many different styles of Bagua Zhang. So each form is coming from a different school.
How can I learn bagua ?
find a teacher or pray for one to turn up.

Gao style sraight line bagua, is not really bagua at all. It doesn’t look like Bagua, feel like it or perform like it during sparring either. I’m tired of having to pretend like I respect it as well. I’ve practiced several different styles of bagua including Gao style and their post heaven forms are just flat out garbage. If you want to practice it fine but please let’s not act like the post heaven forms are bagua. It is just a worse version of xing yi.
Not saying what we saw in this video was all Gao style at all but there was certainly some. Im not the only one who thinks badly of Gao style either so if you want to yell at me fine lol but I’ve met many bagua practitioners from different schools who thought the same thing
Damn I wrote this when I was really drunk last night and now I feel like a jerk. Lol. Can’t delete it either cuz my tablet won’t let me for some reason. Sorry to make any Gao style practioners feel bad the post heaven forms just feel more like xing yi to me. I don’t like how slow it’s done either in comparison to some other Bagua but like I said i shouldn’t be such jerk about it. My bad. I could be totally wrong about it too for all I know.
