@Adamanthon , he used bella's naivety to take advantage of her sexually. Although i can see that he did actually fall in love with her, but he tried to control her much as like what Godwin did to her at home. Preventing her from seeing the world and become independent. I was afraid that anytime Bella did something that Duncan hated, he might physically abuse her. Luckily, he didn't. That's why I kind of symphatize with him especially after he lost the money he won from gambling and him being institutionalized.

I mean, he deserves everything when he used her but by the end he became victim himself 🤣 but despite him trying to manipulate her, he couldn't control her anyway and he didn't try to abuse or push her like the character in the end. “We must work. We must make money. But more than that, we must experience everything. Not just the good, but degradation, horror, and sadness. This makes us whole, Bella. It makes us people of substance, not flighty, untouched children. When we know the world, the world is ours. Now, go and f*ck someone.”
This quote sums up the movie’s core message, and there is much to unpack.
First, what’s wrong with “untouched children”? They’re supposed to be untouched. This movie DOES NOT like children.
Second, this quote reflects the dualistic worldview of the occult elite, where it is believed that the bad, the evil, and the horrific are of equal value as the pure, the good, and the godly. It is by uniting the two that a person becomes “illuminated.”
Finally, the madame probably doesn’t even believe in what she’s saying. She wants Bella to do degrading things so she can profit from her - the same way the elite wants us to believe in their indoctrination so they can profit from us.
The movie makes sure we see Bella being degraded in every way possible. Also, simultaneously, the viewers are watching actress Emma Stone being degraded as well. The movie’s insistence on depicting sex scenes involving the actress takes on a ritualistic dimension where she’s being initiated through humiliation.

This story actually motivated me lol. Maybe it’s mean spirited but it’s relieving to hear that even an actor like Mark Ruffalo who done dozens of movies, participated in one of the biggest franchises of the world, gets insecure and scared when trying something out of their comfort zone. I love this movie. The actors were incredible! I love the story and the perspective it portrays. This is the problem. Not everyone who doesn’t like explicit sex scenes is a bible thumper. If I wanted to watch explicit sex scenes, I would have watched a porn flick. I have been sexually harassed at work, and sexually assaulted. And when I watch someone else being put in this situation who is generally not exhibitionistic like a porn star who may like doing sex scenes, I feel like I am watching a person going through a traumatic crime. And I bet that there is a possibility that actors being put in compromising and embarrassing situations want to vomit when recalling their sex scenes. I can’t imagine the nightmares they would have. It is fine if actors like being in scenes like these, but they would be in that genre of movie, porn. And I am smart enough to understand the point of a movie without explicit sex scenes. My logic is in tact, and my IQ was tested by a neuropsychologist. I play the violin and piano, speak 3 languages, have a master’s degree, etc. Additionally, most people would get the point without excessive material.

Ruffalo was miscast, so that might contribute to him wanting them to get someone else. When the script explicitly refers to a character as a "pretty idiot", you don't cast dopey, dad-handsome Ruffalo at age 55. That aside, his accent constantly going in and out made me think his true nationality was going to be a major plot point.
