Nearly 30 years after the release of the legendary Dagger RPM, and 10 years after the release of the Dagger Axiom, the Dagger Rewind was born. A modern half-slice boat for the modern era of river-running, stern squirts, rock splats and big boofs.
Perhaps because it was also strongly inspired by the Dagger RPM, the Liquidlogic Party Braaap shares many traits of how the Dagger Rewind tackles whitewater. However, the stern is nearly as aggressive as the Pyranha Ripper, or Exo Rexy. With ample volume in the bow the Rewind is also capable in big water similar to the Waka Steeze, and Liquidlogic Mullet.
Paddlers who enjoy the Dagger Phantom on Class 5 will enjoy the Dagger Rewind everywhere else. Similar, but not identical in platform, the Phantom and Rewind strive for a similar and familiar feeling that will give a consistency in style and performance.

I have been testing whitewater kayaks for Mountainman Outdoor Supply - mountainmanoutdoorsupply.com - for a long time. Here is where you can find my whitewater kayak reviews. I take honest deep dives on every new design to create the best reviews which beginners and advanced paddlers will find helpful.
If there is a boat that you would like to see a review for feel free to leave a comment. However, I do my best to get reviews out as soon as I am able. If there is something I haven't done the most likely reason is because I do not have access to it. Help me help you and ask the boat maker to get me a boat to review.
We regularly carry Dagger, Pyranha, Jackson, and Liquid Logic. If I can get my hands on boats from other companies (Waka, Zet, Exo, Lettman, etc) I will do my best to put out an initial review.

Spot on review. I picked up a medium rewind and love it! More playful than a party braaap and runs steep and big water well. Great boat for sure!
Thanks Rome! They also just look so pleasing on the water
Hey Alex. Love your videos. I have an rpm and I love it, it's my first kayak and it's what I'm gonna keep learning in but when I do eventually get a new boat I'm thinking of one of these or a code. I'm a UK paddler in my 40s 6ft n 90kg. Probably going to have whatever I buy for a while but want it to be like a rpm but new n more foot room more comfortable etc. Thanks 🙏
If you aren't going to own a quiver then no reason to own two half slices. The Code would open a lot of doors for you
I’m 192 pounds and 6.1” tall. I have try medium sized on end of the water it fills quite tight so I decided to buy larger I hope it was good decision. I also hope it will be as playful as medium consider my weight and skills I’m only intermediate paddler. ( still waiting for delivery)
The large will help keep you out of trouble. At your height you probably would have wound up paddling the medium sitting quite far back which can make it challenging to handle.
@@AlexBarham thanks Alex I should have it tomorrow can’t wait 🤠
@Lajon78 deep breathes lol
@@AlexBarham I’ll should survive it’s not my first boat 😜
Would be cool to see a prijon Pike review, too. I'll try to message them. I've heard a dealer in NY has some in stock, btw
Noted. Who would that be?
@@AlexBarham I just looked it up.
It's called Paths, Peaks, & Paddles, Inc.
1000 Elicott Creek Road
Tonawanda, New York 14150
I shot them a message. Never heard of them
Dagger better be sending this man a Code. In all three sizes 😤
Shoot them an email and let them know it would help you pull the trigger. Best thing you can do
@@AlexBarham Done, hopefully they listen and get you one soon!
Thorough review, thanks. What did you notice in difference between the medium and large, I think I've seen you paddle both.
I have not paddled the Large Rewind. It was a little late to the party (thanks covid) and by the time it did come it was already bought and paid for.
Paddled the Small for a hot second and it was consistant with the feeling of the Medium. Female paddlers I know who have been paddling the small really like it.
Thanks for the kind words!
@@AlexBarham Thanks, I have a Large on order. I tried to fit into my friends Medium but I just couldn't with my long legs and big feet. I am on the edge weight wise, so I was wondering about performance differences. I know I will eventually find out when my friend is able to get into the large back to back with his medium.
@@theshadowshop if you aren't comfortable in this day and age then you aren't meant to be in the boat. You saying you're on the top end weight wise solidifies that in my mind.
No worries, the large should be quite good as well. From the outside looking in they spent quite a bit of time working on it, and time and budget are the best indicators of success with an experienced designer.
Alex Barham
Alex,
I weigh 195 lbs and I'm 5'9". In your opinion, without having paddled the large, you think I should roll with the medium or the large? A little hesitant to go with the large because I don't want to lose speed or playfulness.
Thanks for the great review!
I am a beginner and looking for a river runner, but I am not sure if it should be the Axiom or the Rewind. I am learning on a Prijon Invader Light so far and don't want to mess up my technique as I am a newbie. Do you have a recommendation (Axiom 8.0 or Rewind small)?
Oh if there is an Axiom around I always snag it. Do that!!
@@AlexBarham Thanks a lot!
5’10-5’11….about 130ish lbs dry. Small or medium rewind if im looking more of a river running capability than a play. First boat and hopefully trying to keep it my only for as long as possible
I would put you in the small. Good luck!
@@AlexBarham could i call you guys and special order and then wait. Saw under preorders u dont have a small rewind coming in. And neither does anyone else in the states😂
Of course! You can also email them at info@mountainmanoutdoors.com
Small for sure just on weight, I am 5'11 145 and fit in a small. I have both though. it'll be a battle to squirt the medium
Hey Alex thanks again for the review! Hey, I got a big ass dent somehow in my Rewind after it was only about 2 months old. It's right under the seat and it's kind of a bummer. I tried some hot water, sun, heat gun, a bunch of shims under the seat, etc, but I couldn't get it to fully come out. I figured I would ask you since you're so good at outfitting and fixing up old boats, maybe you can make a dent repair video? I saw your slicey boat oil can video but this is a little different. Sucks to have a basically 6 month old boat that is already kinda busted up, I don't think it's a warranty type of thing either. Keep up the good work
Can't hurt to send some photos to Dagger and ask if that is normal. Beyond that try suspending the boat with the seat removed, adding boiling water, and then installing the seat with shims while it is still hot.
Hi Alex. Thanks for the comprehensive review. Im looking for a boat to get comfortable in with a view to doing a trip to the Zambezi next year. Seems for that sort of water its full slices or half slices for some reason, rather than creekers. Just looking to get down and surf a bit, not kickflip the lateral on number 9! Whats your thoughts on the rewind in big water in the hands of an intermediate paddler? Hard to demo one here in much volume. I'd be 160lbs in a medium. Thanks
Hey Allen! That is going to be a big trip for you on that timeline, but with the Zam being dammed you should do it if you can. That said a little extra help will go a long way. Have you seen the Zet Ninja? That is an extremely reliable big water boat that will give you a little extra help in big water.
@@AlexBarham Ya, thanks, an exciting goal for sure! I'm in a pyranha varun mostly at the moment which has been good for most things but ideally would be looking for a bit more speed&rocker I think. Thanks. Will check out the Ninja and maybe also the puffy Goat.
Sounds good! We have both in stock!
I would love to know how the Antix 2.0 and the rewind compare!
Hopefully I will have some thoughts after this weekend!
I’m a 100% beginner, and am interested in the Rewind and the new Code. Any thoughts? Thanks!
Both are a great choice. Starting in a creeper will let you go more places faster, a half slice will be more fun long term if you can only reach a handful of rivers a year
I'm interested to see what you think about the Antix 2.0, My club seems to love the rewind, so i guess I better try one, but I love my current Antix, so there is always this lingering doubt. I wish Utah had a place to Demo boats, it's very short on supply. Is it just me or is Dagger plastic harder than say my Jackson. Or is my Dagger just old, and the new stuff softer too?
The Antix 2.0 is going to be very different than the original. I don't think that there is going to be a lot of continuity in anything but the outfitting. The Zen 3.0 and 2.0 similarly have a huge gap between them.
Doesn't mean it will be a bad thing, just an observation.
As for the plastic debate, that just isn't a rabbit hole I want to venture into.
I understand Alex’s apprehension about going down the plastic 🐇 hole, but I’ll take a crack at it. 😁
Background: Current fleet in our household is one Dagger, three Pyranha, three Jackson boats, and I have some experience w Waka too. I can’t speak to LL boats (yet...I’ve had an Alpha or order for months).
IMO the Dagger plastic is unquestionably “harder” than most other manufacturers. Whether that means it is better or tougher is perhaps debatable. I will say they have one of best warranties in business and a reputation for durability and even being overbuilt (popular for those doing rentals and lessons as a result).
While I have buddies w Daggers that have seen better days, my experience has been they actually are more durable than most, but ymmv, and they are also heavier too for sure. I’m a featherweight and don’t tend to break boats (🤞🏼), so this has never been something I’ve worried about too much, but I know that’s not the case for many. Hope that helps.
Love the videos Alex. Im 5'7" and 165lbs naked. Ordering a Rewind for my do everything boat. Lots of big water, overnighters, little bit of grade 4 creeking and some play. Medium you recon?
Definitely Medium. You could get away with a small if you weren't packing the boat with gear and wanted to focus on it being sporty instead.
Hey alex. I have been doing class 3+ in an ace 4.7 and I am thinking about getting a new boat. Would you recommend the remix or the code?
If you can run 3+ in an Ace then the overly forgiving nature of the Remix will be wasted on you. Skip to the Code, and size it appropriately. Do not stuff yourself in a smaller size because it "seems big"
Hey man, I am ordering a new rewind without demoing it first :x I weight 192lbs and i am not sure if I should order a medium or large :x
The medium will be playful in low flows, and sporty in bigger flows. The large will be a high performance river runner, but big eddy lines will be needed to get big stern squirts.
Hi. Just interested in what boat you went with, and what your thoughts are? I'm a similar weight have having the same thoughts. Really want something I would be comfortable creaking in, bit at the same time get the sturn down.
Thanks for taking the time to review. At 195 pounds and 6‘2“ do you think the large rewind is my best choice?
I would think so. Don't overlook the Antix 2.0! These are both top notch
@@AlexBarham thanks- I’ll look at the antix as well!
Hi Alex, how do the rewind and the antix 2.0 compare to each other and the axiom?
The Antix 2 is going to be more forgiving and have a more playful stern, but be slower.
As far as the Axiom, I generally regard the Antix 2.0 to be the updated Axiom. Not what the Jackson team was going for, but it is what popped out.
What river(s) are your kayaking on in this video?
Moose, Beaver, and Black in New York.
I cry every time I think of my Axiom, should have never sold it 😩
The stern of mine got converted into wall art
Could you do a review on the waka goat?
I'd love to but don't have one handy. If you want to help me help you you could email Waka and ask them to help me out with a demo.
Thank you for all of your great reviews! Any thoughts between a small and medium for a 5'6" 150lb paddler?
Thanks Brett!
I'd probably stick you in the small with the understanding that in big water and class 5 you're going to at least consider switching to a creeker.
@@AlexBarham would you recommend the same for a paddler 5'6" 160 LB ?
@@denisecorrado4444 At that point you're creeping into a medium
@@denisecorrado4444 medium. too tippy in a small
Either shred it in a small or get a medium with a booster seat. I am 145 and paddle both.
I'm from the uk and if we have problems with our dagger kayaks they don't up hold their 5 year warranty so quite a few of us are paddling damidged boats.
That's very surprising. The warranty is not a 5 year full replacement, but a discount after 2 years or something. Still more than you're getting from anyone else
@@AlexBarham that's true yes it is better then other companys in that aspect however when we order them they actually come warped or with some fault. My rewind came which a huge indentation on the back but i fixed it my self. Its the same for others to
@@samirhardy3782 Sounds like a shipping or storage issue. If your retailer or shipper stacked the boats that can happen.
Try the large when u can cause I saw it was 9’4” which just sounds too long
Yikes! Yeah that's hard for me to get behind if true
I'm 5"4 155lb, looking for an all rounder. The majority of what I paddle is grade 3-4 so I want something playful for that but that will also get me down bigger if needs be. I can't decide between the small or medium! What do you recommend?
medium and slap a booster seat in there or a small without. You cant go wrong with either. Is 3-4 pushing it for you or are you playing in class 4? You'll have a blast in a small, or be comfortable in a medium, choice is yours.
You'd be a medium to have the extra volume to handle river running. If you wanted an aggressive play machine you'd be in the small
I am not sure if I got it right: Is the rewind more forgiving than the ripper or the other way round?
Forgiveness is just not a thing we focus on often with these boats. That is usually a red flag that you should be in a full volume boat. To that point going up a size is the best way to take some sporty-ness out of a half-slice.
Most forgiving on the market would be the Antix 2.0 in my opinion. To answer your question, I would say that the Rewind's softer chines are going to let you get away with more than a Ripper.
Hmmm interesting review.
Thanks!
Have you been in the new Antix 2.0 yet Alex?
Paddling this weekend I believe.
HI. I'm 5'7, 160 pounds- would like the playfulness and running lots of mainly class 4/4+ stuff. Small or medium? Thanks
You'd be best off demoing, but since you said play first probably the small
@@AlexBarham Thanks Alex, if I had said playfulness second, would you have suggested a medium?
Exactly. You're right there
@@AlexBarham got it, thanks
Sure thing!
Yo do a waka OG review!!
Soon!
I'm new to ww kayaking but not to ww. I used to be a raft guide in CA but live in MN now where there are good we kayak rivers but nothing with enough volume to raft. I'm 6"4 and 250lbs and I got a dagger rewind. I cannot find stability in this kayak, I have only paddled IKs in the past and this is a very different feel. I can't move my seat forward cause I'm too tall. Does anyone have any other tips to help with stability? So far I can't even keep stable on a choppy lake, much less a river haha. Thanks to anyone for comments
What size Rewind? A medium would be too small
@@AlexBarham it's the large, still seems a bit small but I think most kayaks are at my size haha
You'll find the Large Antix 2.0 is excellent for your weight
@@AlexBarham that's a great tip, I wish I had consulted you before purchasing. I had read a few articles that mentioned the rewind being an alright option even though it did say it's not the best to learn on. Anyways I ended up with the dagger rewind and my partner will murder me if I buy an antix anytime soon so I'm saving that tip in the back pocket for the future. Do you have any insight on how I could outfit the rewind to increase stability and do you think my size is the reason for instability? Thank you so much!
See my outfitting video and make sure it is tight. Paddle it on the flat and get comfy
Hey Alex. Excellent job on your videos. Keep’um coming. I’m looking at the Stratos. I’m 5”11 210lbs would the 12.5L work or the 14L? How much difference between the 2 sizes (yes I know, 2ft 🤣) any difference in open water and class 1 between the 2?
Sorry man. I dont paddle touring boats!
Definitely don't take one of those on a river. Keels and current don't play nice
Alex Barham Thanks for the quick reply. With my stout measurements, which would you recommend for class 1/2? I was also looking at the Rewind.
Any large size whitewater kayak will fit you just fine. Rewind is great, you may also want to look at an Antix.
Alex Barham Awesome thanks again.
Any time!
What weight did you paddle the medium at? I'm 207lb butt-naked and am looking at the medium instead of large, but not sure.
You'll be close to the top end, but moving the seat forward a bit should do the trick
Interested in comment on seat position.
I'm around 70kg in full paddling gear, and have found for both Rewind and Pyranha 9R2 (both medium) I need the seat fully forward otherwise too much of the bow is pointing skywards.
Both surf really well for me like this.
I think it is why you need to experiment with the outfitting to suit you and get to best out of your boat.
Really like the review.
Sounds Iike this is a personal preference thing. Might be related to you being a bit light in those boats
Any suggested retailers to find one anyone???
