Fun fact, the waterfall the Monkey King Sun Wukong jumped through in Journery to the West is actually located in Guizhou, China. @cpt.flamer7184 I thought someone would mention that! It actually refers to the color of the fruit much in the same way English does, however unlike English it can refer to multiple yellow and orange colored fruits, including tangerines and some types of melon or squash. In the case of the fruit tree inspiring the name of waterfall, I believe they are called Loquat trees in English? Not 100% on that but from pictures they look similar to what I remember in the area. As a hindu from India I will say "you researched very well" 😅 And irony is I was watching your videos for a long time but I subscribed today at the start of this video intutionally 😊
I think Oda initially drew his inspiration from Wukong for his initial characters but as he dug for more lore to further his monkey-inspired characters he eventually landed on or crossed paths with the story of Hanuman, that's where he likely drew the character of Luffy from. Considering how Wukong is inspired by Hanuman, there's no way that there won't be any similarity between Hanuman, Wukong, and Luffy since all these 3 characters are strongly connected.
Hi Liam. I saw your "The Real Reason Why Luffy is Named MONKEY!" Video recently ['cause I follow your content]. I came to correct and maybe give you an idea. The God Hanuman you talked about is not the god for poverty and Illness. He is actually worshipped for 2 reasons. One- He is the most courageous god amongst all. Hence he is worshipped at times when you need courage, example-in the dark, during battle etc. Two- When he was a child he wasn't exactly knowledgeable but he had quick wits. He isn't exactly foolish, but what you would call simple. But after taking education from the literal Sun God, he became part of the wisdom trinity of Demigods, Ganesh, Saraswati and Hanuman. Also, He was injured by the Thunder God in his Chin with a weapon named Vajra, after which then he was blessed to have a body of Vajra [the most powerful material in Hinduism]. Also, different from Sun Wukong, Hanuman was an Avatar of Lord Shiva, the God of Destruction. Also, similar to Luffy, Hanuman wasn't taken care of by his Biological father, Vayu. But just like Dragon he once stepped up for his son when Hanuman was attacked by Vajra the only thing that could kill him, just like Dragon came on LogueTown. Not once after that, did they meet canonically. One last thing, Hanuman isn't exactly a Monkey, he is a Monkey like being, more like a Human with a tail [Which too isn't exactly mentioned in canon document], similar to tribals. That's all. Anyway, great work.
@@t.kersten7695since whether those with resources share with those without is an arbitrary choice by those with resources we can't consider poverty a separate thing unconnected from the people that cause it. Such as real world poverty existing because of the massive hoarding of resources by the ultra wealthy.
I was wondering why Hanuman sounded so familiar. Turns out I was remembering a Thai-Japanese Kaiju film called The 6 Ultra Brothers vs. the Monster Army. It's essentially an Ultraman rip-off but with Hanuman instead of Ultraman.
The thing is hanuman is not exactly prayed for in the capacity to overcome illness and poverty but rather strength ( which might associate to the illness part, almost all Indian gyms have a picture of hanuman in them), he is also said to be "sankat mochan" basically " one who quells perils" (something that may be associated to both illness and poverty) and he is said to grant wisdom ( maybe associated to the poverty part ??)... Also just love your work man on the internet.
Theory about his first name: In the german anime dub he is called Ruffy (spoken like Raffi), i think because they wanted a name that german kids could recognize as a real name that also sounded kinda like how he was pronounced in japan. So Raffi is a quiet common nickname for Raphael. Raphael ist one of the archangels in christianity and judaism. In hebrew rapha'el means "god heals" so Raphael is considert archangel of healing. I think Oda wanted Luffy to be the healer/healing of his world. So he named him Raphael and chose a shorter form (fit for japanese pronounciation) of it, which the german anime later reconstucted purely by accident.
@@cpt.flamer7184 dubs aside, more likely the english language. "A" und "u" in different germanic languages can often times make the same sound. The "u" in buy or hunt for example sounds more like a german "a" then any other vowel. R's and L's get confused quite often as well. So the step from Raffi (Short for Raphael) to Luffy is phoneticly not as big as it seems written.
@@cpt.flamer7184that's not what he said he said luffy might be a Japanese shortened version of Raphael. Which is possible rs and ls are interchangeable essentially in Japanese. It might be a thing who knows?
This video was great! Oda is definitely a big fan of history and mythology and this overview of some of the different stories that may have inspired elements of One Piece was very fun and interesting, and your style fits it well. I hope you consider doing more videos like these about One Piece's place in the wider world of history and storytelling, because this video left me wanting more!
Actually, Hanuman did eat the sun, but some other gods made him spit it out. Also, the sun is a god in Hindu mythology, so they both ate “sun gods”. This is the reason why hanuman forgot his powers, as punishment
FYI: The moniker of "D." is inspired by the real life pirate Blackbeard: Edward D. Teach (or Tatch). Until this day, no one is 100% sure of what the "D" stood for. But it is currently believed to be "Drummond".
14:50 is there a Japanese Onomatopoeia for 'frown,' or 'cry?' Maybe a scowl or angry also.. or afraid. I wonder if there could be other mythical zoan dieties named in this manner? Like the Elbaph god could be onomatopoeia for 'Flex,' or 'Attack' or 'Fight.' idk.. or if BB gets a mythical zoan i think if that pic if him crying under the moon. So maybe the opposite of Nika was the moon god, "Sad, lonely crying by moon light." Or something
Surprised who didn't even mention how Oda basically split Wukong's characteristics between Luffy AND Nami. Luffy: -Strength -Shape morphing -Monkeys and Kings Nami: -Staff -Weather abilities (with illusions) -Cloud
0:36 Toriyama got around this by simply not giving his characters family names except for Gokus family and just making it canon that they're so old fashioned almost noone uses them
Hey aslo the first son god pose of his shodow being in front of the moon is very similar to the most common pose god hunuman is showed in (which is where he carries a whole mountain full of medicinal plants because he couldn't find the he needed to heel the wound of lakshman)
Uzumaki is actually the surname, Naruto is the given name, you got that one backwards. Granted, Uzumaki is his mother’s maiden name, the series weirdly decided to try to hide his parentage by using his mother’s family name despite her clan being incredibly infamous (and nearly wiped out), while his father is the only named member of his clan.
Also they literally wear the Uzumaki symbol on their ninja uniforms and literally Naruto the only Uzumaki in the leaf with blonde Hair and the only blonde married to a Uzumaki in the leaf is Minato 😂
About Loki. What about the "Dog-Dog Model Fenrir" for his fruit? Fenrir in the myths is a (giant) Wolf son of Loki. Chained down to prevent it from starting Ragnarok, the end of the world. Also, in a couple of versions of the myth, Fenrir eats the sun. Seems to fit with how Oda presented Loki Trivia! The chain itself was named Gleipnir, which was made from six things: The stomping of cats The beards of women The roots of mountains The spit of bird The breath of fishes The sinew of a bear
0:50 U mean use Naruto Uzumaki instead of Uzumaki Naruto cause Uzumaki is the family name and if U read the manga it's Uzumaki Naruto but for some reason the anime flipped it
Wonder if Oda's monkey obsession has anything to do with the fact he is an admitted Dragon Ball fan (ironically Akira Toriyama became something of a One Piece cause of his children so it kinda came full circle though tragically Toriyama did not live to see how One Piece would end due to his tragic passing early this year)! 3:56 - Glad to see we are on the same wavelength here as it does make alot of sense for anyone familiar with the late Toriyama and Dragon Ball's impact on Oda like many of his contemporaries (Kishimoto the author of Naruto being another)!
Was anyone else kind of excited to see garp get captchered? It definitely gave a "that's what you get kind of moment" since whitebeard also attacked the navy head on, I was hoping garp didn't survive this attack as well because he attacked the pirates head on. Showing us the navy can't do anything they want even though that's sometimes implied.
Monkey D. Luffy is his own unique character that takes a lot of inspiration from many Monkey stories, the same way One Piece is it's own story but takes inspiration from multiple stories
Monkey definitely developed different meanings as the series went on, but the most original reason is simply that Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, is a prototype for basically all traditional shounen MCs that follow the same school as Dragonball.
Time zones always fuck me up when I see these get posted. I think "oh, he's posting first thing in the morning." Except it's like 10pm there right now.
Since I'm an Asian, I grew up watching Sun Wukong. There is no Asian who didn't know Sun Wukong. He is my all time fav fictional character. The best character of all time and maybe that's why I love Luffy. They have very similar personality except Sun Wukong is extremely smart and nobody can trick him. Sometimes Wukong can be cruel and cunning but still very good character. Luffy is innocent and straight forward which I really love.
As far as I know of Journey to the west (I read it a few years back), Sun wu Kong never wanted to be the monkey king or the king of anything at all, he just happened to became it because he got in the waterfall and come back. He didn't do it because he wantes anything someone made a dare and he took it, yes he stepped up for the king role as good as he could but he really didn't care at all. Same as Luffy he never wanted to have a grand fleet it just happened. In my opinion the only thing Wu Kong wanted was total freedom to do whatever he wanted whenever he wanted, that is a bit different from Luffy that wants everyone to be as free as him. A part of the point of Wu Kong's punishment in the journey was exactly this, the realization that others too deserve freedom, peace and happiness. Even when his kingdom was attacked he wasn't angry because they harmed his subjects he was angry because they messed with him by doing that, even their thirst for power is totally different since Luffy wants it to protect what's important to him while Wu Kong wants power for power's sake (at least at first)
Does he know that the Hanuman drawing he used in the video is carrying a green thing, which is actually a whole ass mountain. In mythology, Hanuman is a devotee to Lord Ram, and Ram's brother Lakshman, fell ill and the mystic guru who was treating him told Hanuman to bring him an exotic plant located on a specific mountain, but when hanuman flew there he wasn't able to find the special plant because all of them looked similar, so he grew himself in size and tore the whole mountain out of the ground and flew it back to the Guru who then climbed it and made the medicine. Oda definitely took inspiration from this when Nami got sick before drum island and luffy scaled a whole mountain to bring her to Dr Kureha
I don't know if you read my comment about Bajrang and all these references to Luffy's story that I made on another one of your videos or if it's a coincidence, but I like to believe that you did, and I helped somehow hahaha

As allways, a peak video to watch when eating. How am I going to get through my dinner after one piece ends and Grandlinereview stops posting...
More of this series please!! ❤❤❤
0:50 U mean use Naruto Uzumaki instead of Uzumaki Naruto cause Uzumaki is the family name and if U read the manga it's Uzumaki Naruto but for some reason the anime flipped it
As in the eng dub of the anime right? Cause I clearly remember it being Uzumaki Naruto in the sub
@@vongolashodaime1975 yes
Hey @GrandLineReview do you mind sharing the name of the microphone you use?
1:58 Smooth. 😂
This video was a delight to watch man on the internet
BRUH. Im a security guard at MyHeritage. they are all super nice people. how small is this world. mind blown
Monkey D. Luffy is his own unique character that takes a lot of inspiration from many Monkey stories, the same way One Piece is it's own story but takes inspiration from multiple stories
daaaaamn the parallels to the journey to the west.. that was a childhood favourite
I'm sorry for skipping the ad segment, I had an appointment. I rewatched it afterwards and I promise to watch it in full next video.
The music is fire, good pick!
There's no music in this video, BOT
9:33
Crocomom
Thats it...
Monkey definitely developed different meanings as the series went on, but the most original reason is simply that Sun Wukong, the Monkey King, is a prototype for basically all traditional shounen MCs that follow the same school as Dragonball.
Best videos to listen too while showering
Time zones always fuck me up when I see these get posted. I think "oh, he's posting first thing in the morning."
Except it's like 10pm there right now.
Dragon always looks so serious. But I don’t think any of us are prepared for how crazy and wacky he’s actually going to be.
33vil called it 12:43
My heritage lost me when they promoted that they could "animate" historical photos.
2:05 so thats namis past and heritage thats why we know nothing because we already actually know 20 plus members of her family
Even when his kingdom was attacked he wasn't angry because they harmed his subjects he was angry because they messed with him by doing that, even their thirst for power is totally different since Luffy wants it to protect what's important to him while Wu Kong wants power for power's sake (at least at first)
one of my favorite moments in one piece was monkeys on little garden even to this moment
Much love from Scotland 😂
I wonder if it is the presence of so many monkeys that make us "go ape" over One Piece.
When you mentioned the theory where Vivi get kidnapped, it sound like an Indian mythology,I forgot the name.
@@Vineethajojo hmmm u mean the one where ravana(the demon) kidnapps Sita the wife of ram?
It's the one where hanuman helps save the wife of prince ram from.the demon king. The ramayana
That's the one
Excellent segue
I like that the German translation decided to call him "Ruffy" since he is also quite rough in some respects
torishima was at one point toriyama's editor too, and he modeled piccolo after torishima because he is the perfect image of a demon king
Smooth ad read transition.
I don't know if you read my comment about Bajrang and all these references to Luffy's story that I made on another one of your videos or if it's a coincidence, but I like to believe that you did, and I helped somehow hahaha
Luffy has Monkey in his name and he has the nika fruit 💀💀💀😭🙏
Kong is easily the character I most often forget exists
big fan of the channel and thought it would be cool to see your thoughts on one piece fan letter
I always associate Luffys name with laugh.
I know they have different spellings but laughter describes Luffy so much
I need “distinctly unminkly” on a shirt *chefs kiss*
"Did you just call me handsom!?"
-Mansom, Toriko
In my native language (hungarian) luffy (spelled as lufi, but pronounced the same) means balloon
