    I have a PI 400 and I love it. I have a stack of external drives and SD cards full of various operating systems and I can turn it into whatever I want it to be. If I want a Linux desktop, I grab the HDD, if I want it to be an Amiga grab the SD card. I wish they made an 8GB model, but it's still great to use!

    I bought two of them for my two kids back in 2020 as they came out. They used it for their homeschooling during the evil c pandemic. They used iserv and office 365 programs and had never any problems with it. The price for the kit was 110€ each in 2020 and is still available for 105 - 110€ here in Germany.

    The only down side with the Pi 400 is that its less "hackable" and isn't something you can easily stick on an electronics workbench next to a breadboard and an Arduino to mess around with. But as someone who came from the ZX Spectrum and Commodore Amiga many years ago, I appreciate the "home computer" design ethic - I think it was Dan Wood on his Amiga-focused channel that did a video showing how a Raspberry Pi is essentially the best Amiga every built. My Pi 400 mostly sits there as an emulated Amiga with Pimiga and it's a great little machine for that reason alone.
    With that said, everyone's far too fixated on 8 GB RAM anyway, probably because they've come from Windows backgrounds where every time a new Windows version comes out, the RAM demand essentially doubles because of the built in bloat. The last time I touched Windows to build PCs with it was Windows 7 that always had a minimum RAM requirement of 4 GB, for example, and it used to make me laugh that people would sell PCs or netbooks with 1 or 2 GB RAM installed and Windows 7 and me knowing that PC would slow to a crawl within weeks with registry bloat.
    I've been using Linux since 1996 (UNIX for a bit longer) and Gentoo Linux for my main OS since 2003. I still have perfectly functional dual core laptops running at 2 GHz with 4 GB RAM that are perfectly fine daily drivers - they are not going to run AAA games or do any serious video editing any time soon (just like a Raspberrry Pi) but, with Linux, are perfectly good daily driver machines for general office work, a bit of programming and browsing. Yes, some of them with Intel video chips will struggle with 1080p video on UA-cam but as they usually only have 720p capable native screen resolutions anyway, that's not really an issue.
    I've got both a 4GB and 8GB Pi 4 and I don't see any appreciable difference between the two when using them side-by-side. To be honest, with the difference in price between the 4GB and 8GB version (in "normal" times anyway), for the same money I'd be more inclined to buy the 4 GB version with a 128 GB SATA SSD and a USB to SATA cable than an 8 GB Pi 4 because the SSD instead of MicroSD has a much bigger impact on speed than the additional 4 GB RAM.
    People need to lose the "Windows RAM fixation". Linux is designed to be customisable to your requirements, it's why I chose Gentoo Linux as the ultimate "tweaker OS". I own an IBM Thinkpad R31 from about 2003 with a 1 GHz single core Pentium III CPU and 512 MB RAM that I make a point of using as my daily driver on occasions just to remind myself how obsessive the world has become about "more RAM and CPU power" without understanding why it's needed. Some of my day job is shell scripting in Linux, and I can happily sit there on that old R31 for a day, programming and testing scripts in Vim with an email client open on another screen and playing music from my home music server without thinking about it. To be perfectly honest, it's a great "distraction free" machine to use.

      I agree with Terry Daktyllus. Since reasonably priced Pi 4's are in short supply, I purchased several 400's to do some parallel processing experiments which are working very well, but they're not very compact. I do wonder how well Pimiga performs emulated vs running on native hardware?

Either way, i love mine, i've managed to just plug it into my macbook cord, turn on my headphones, and boom. Thanks to Orca and the mate desktop and bluetoothmon, i was able to make my own little computer anywhere, with no display. And, it can even run on a battery. Love the Idea of the 400. Just cant think of an excuse to pull the trigger to get one. My Pi 4 B 8gig has been serving just nicely, its latest upgrade was 1 Tb SSD a full rebuild of the server so it boots of USB SSD so it has a music server, Web Server and SMB server. there are the plethora of little pi zero and Pi Zero 2 projects around the house programming, data collection, playback A/V, connected to other GPIO hardware including the HQ camera module. There are iterations of various servers as well the one used by all in the house that nobody knows about is the Pi-Hole setup. My last phone I bought extremely powerful, that stooped me needing to take the laptop with me and with SSH Im never to faraway from little to big Linux hardware. though a 400 and a portable monitor is always tempting, though my phone and the same monitor keyboard and mouse can do the same... in the past I did take a pi 4 out in field it was a great little box of Swiss army knife of connectivity tools...

    With respect, at about 1:45, when talking about KDE's vast functionality, you refer to it as an Operating System, rather than a Desktop Environment. I mention this because when I began learning about Linux I would confuse Distros and DE's. So, for any newbies...

    I have 2 Pi 400s, I love the idea and sizing. One of them I turned into an "emergency computer" in case I need or want a computer (which actually gets used as such! Found myself waiting somewhere yesterday and made use of a display for that very purpose, got actual tasks done too) It's light and small enough to carry without straining my back/bulging my bag, and the inbuilt keyboard means I don't have to carry a separate one nor depend on the place I'm going to having one available.
    The second one I have, I got it because even then there weren't any 4B's available, but its keyboard is pretty bad compared to the first one 😭 I would have rather had the 4B because I needed one for a project, but I can't bring myself to tearing the other 400 apart, even if its keyboard is annoying and doesn't work nicely 😔

    I'm delighted I followed your suggestion of a few weeks ago and bought a pi400!
    I'd watched your video recommending that people consider that model, rather than wait an indefinite period for a pi4. I've had an pi4 8G model on order with CPC since early Jan when the estimated delivery was 3 weeks from order, but I was getting emails every week moving the date back another week so it was receding ever into the future. I then got an email with a delivery estimate of November! I ordered a 400 from CPC (for £53.04 ex. VAT) the same day, but also started checking the web site you recommended for stock availability (rpilocator).
    The day after the 400 turned up, rpilocator reported that OKdo had pi4 4G models in stock @ £44.84 (ex. VAT) so because I already had a keyboard, mouse, power supply and case from my earlier CPC order (which had been fulfilled except for the pi4), I went ahead and ordered one! So, I went from none with an estimated wait until November to owning two a few days after seeing your video!
    Anyway, they are basically interchangeable - at least functionally - and I'm having a lot of fun with them! I'm working my way through your back catalogue of Pi News and getting lots of ideas and useful tips. At the moment I'm focussing on finding the limits of what a pi can do as a practical desktop machine, which is more than most people probably realise! My current project is integrating the pi workspace with my MacBook workspace so whatever is immediately to hand on one is immediately to hand on the other - that way I don't have to switch machines to access notes, calendars, passwords, etc. My main problem is remembering the new stuff I'm learning fast enough so I don't have to back-track to find it again (old brain syndrome!)
    My advice to others, therefore, is to follow your advice 🙂

    I always saw the 400 as the "ready to go desktop" solution, where the regular RPI 4 could be used in all kinds of projects - with or without a keyboard (for example, OctoPi for the 3d printer. you have no need for a keyboard on that). So, at twice the price of a RPI 4, the 400 doesn't make sense to buy 20 of - therefore it's in less demand. but I wouldn't call it a failure. I actually want to pick one up as a desktop so I can move my Pi4 to a project.

    • @fetchstixRHD
      @fetchstixRHD 2 роки тому +5

      Personally, comparing like for like (4GB Pi 4 vs the 400 unit), the 400 is a pretty good deal for desktop computing use imo. The cost difference is/was about £10 or so with some suppliers, and that's about what you'd spend on a case/cooling alone for the 4b (which you almost certainly need for any real use whatsoever!)
      However, for other uses where you don't need (or possibly even want) a keyboard, it's harder to use the 400 unless you tear it open and account for the differently shaped PCB, amongst other things

      I mean it's not even close to twice the price when you break it down. The 4gb pi 4 model is $55 for just the SBC and the RPI 400 is $70 for just the pi 400. With a stock clock of 1.8 out of the box, it's really more powerful thanks to the redesign of the heat sink allowing lowering operating Temps.
      I've resulted to 3d printing custom cases for the 400 pcb, at least until the stock of the 4 is settled. Side by side my pi 400 beats my pi 4 4gb everytime. Just wish it had the pi camera connection.

    • @fetchstixRHD
      @fetchstixRHD 2 роки тому +2

      @@VRtheFuture: Indeed, maybe it's different where OP lives but as above the difference between equivalent models is minimal, what you save on getting the Pi 4 can easily be overshadowed by having to buy a case and cooling, assuming desktop use.
      Having said that though, seems like they compared the 400 kit to the standalone 4B - taking the 4B kit against the 400 kit still gives the 400 being cheaper (here in GB, PiHut lists a difference of £22 less for the 400, with the 400 kit only lacking one HDMI cable AFAICT!)

    • @AudreyRobinel
      @AudreyRobinel 2 роки тому +2

      Hello! I get your point. However, the 400 at 100€ is the full kit. The 400 alone is at around 65-80€, for a 4Gb version, whereas the pi4 4GB is 50+€, often 60. So in these times of low availability, the 400 is not much more expensive.
      As for projects, it require a bit more work, but you can remove the board from the case and use it for projects. the board is wider but not that big; as pi4 as bloody impossible to buy anywhere, that's the way i'll be going now!

    I like my pi 400 a lot. I had a pi 3b+ previously. My 400 overclocks perfectly at 2350. My only complaint is how scattered the info necessary to do things I want to do to get a nice properly working desktop running the applications I prefer has become. I feel very lucky to have found in passing the instructions for overclocking to 2350. I've only seen them in one place, and can't even remember where that place was- I copied and printed out the config.txt settings. That is just one example. It needs a good wiki or something.

The 'regular Pi' is a great educational tool, an experimental SBC, a small server, an IOT / home automation champion, and much more... I think the Pi400 has a job to play too. It's 'simple', familiar, surprisingly versatile and imho a lot of 'bang for ur $$$'. I like it a lot.

    The only thing they did wrong with the pi 400 is not including an audio jack, meaning you would need an extra USB adapter or HDMI audio splitter for one if you don't have speakers on your monitor! And that kinda defeats the purpose of the "everything you need in one package" focus of the product. So although I don't personally have one, that's the only issue I see with it. I hope that they continue that series in the future with a pi 500 and on, cause it really is a great idea and a great product just as it is right now.
    And btw when trying to snap windows in kde, focus on where the mouse cursor itself is hitting the edges of the screen, not the whole window you're dragging. Since the mouse is dragging from the title bar, if you drag the window to the middle right for example, the mouse will be closer to the top right corner and is more likely to snap the window to the top corner, not the whole side of the screen which explains why it seemed a little finicky in the video.

    So for me, the fastest pi I've ever owned.
    Just different form factor for what people do, I'd say it's not for people's normal projects but any networking stuff you want to setup or even gpio projects it's much easier working from the 400, nice and contained without the spaghetti of wires to do it locally or any fan noise.

    I think it fills a niche for some types of desktop use. However much of the use of Raspberry Pi is by makers. Also as a desktop user myself I prefer to use a standard keyboard. So the market must be a good deal smaller than for the standard Raspberry Pi. But if you want the Pi packaged into a keyboard it must be very attractive. The need for a separate mouse must make it difficult to use on your lap in front of your TV

    I wish the forthcoming Pi's had an empty M.2 slot (so you can choose the 'HDD' size to your liking and budget)
    An empty RAM slot so you can choose how much RAM you need/want.
    That would be fantastic and initial cost would naturally be very low.
    I have 2 Pi 400's and I'm happy with them other than the somewhat 'clustrophobic' 4Gb RAM.

    The Pi 400 is brilliant, but a touch underpowered for what it tries to be. It seems to me that it wants to be a low budget, low power desktop replacement. It's still a tad too slow to really be acceptable for most people in that role. And its form factor isn't quite compatible with the people who get Pis for hardware tinkering.
    When there will eventually be a Pi 5, I think that will have right specs for what the 400 was aiming to be. I don't want a Pi 400 for the above reasons, but I am excited for a potential Pi 500.

    Purchased one for my nephew as a b-day gift. Have to wait a month (when his b-day is actually) to give it to him. Of course he's nearly 30. lol
    Still, for $99 (S&H got me, since I had to pay nearly $120 total) but with mouse and book, felt it worth the total cost. As a side, at this price, it would make for a great kiosk for schools to browse the internet on. Lots of other possibilities, too. Just regret not buying one for myself. lol

    The Pi 400 is a brilliant idea. But as I'm limited on space, I don't have the space to dedicate to an extra desk, keyboard and monitor. So I use a 3B on the back of my main PC's monitor as a Retropie gaming system, another mounted in a Pi-Top (Mk 2), and another Pi-Top (Mk 1) with a Pi 4. I also have a Pi Zero W (currently setting up as a Pi-Hole). I want the latest version of the Pi 4 (with the same 1.8 Ghz CPU as the 400), to upgrade my monitor mounted Retropie system, and Pi-Top (Mk 1). But can't get them. This video has given me ideas about at least replacing the monitor mounted Retropie Pi 3 with a Pi 400 - maybe out of its case, mounted to the monitor, or make a bracket and mount it under the desk and use a KVM and Berryboot to make it in to both a Retropie system, and power effiecent desktop replacement for web browsing and UA-cam. I'd love to figure out if I can get one of these to mount (minus keyboard and heatsink) in a Pi-Top, but can't find the dimensions of the bare motherboard. Looks like I'm talking myself in to buying a Pi 400. :)

    About 2 weeks ago (Mar of 2022) I purchased the Pi400 kit (book, power cord, mouse, micro HDMI cable) from Canakit for $100USD. The Pi400 by itself still goes for $70USD IF you can find one. I didn't mind shelling out for the kit since it hasn't been price gouged yet. I like it, but I'm on the hunt for a monitor. The Pi400 has a ton of competitors - as it's kinda entered the 'laptop' market but without a screen. So that might account for it still being in stock. Not only that, but he Pi400 is also competing int he same as regular Pi's. So it doesn't have its one 'natural/home' retail strata. One thing people don't seem to have considered is that maybe the Pi400 was massively overproduced?

    We need an integrated Raspberry Pi + keyboard + one or two empty slots inside to plug M.2 / SSDs drives. The 400 solves the keyboard + CPU part of an on-the-go use case but NOT the storage part: an SD card is way too slow for serious daily work. In addition, there is not yet an official 8GB version (a hack is needed for a RAM upgrade). Is there a company somewhere willing to design such system? Argon? GeekWorm? Raspberry ?!

    A little bit more power and it will be dangerous for the competitors. It has impressed me beyond all expectation. Luckily I could not buy anything else, because now I love my 400, I did not know what I was missing. Of course it is not optimal to build into your robot project. But it's still good for software development, and the IO port has easier access than many of the other enclosures. And when you need a break when your brain is running low on all that ingenuity, you can always relax by watching a UA-cam video on your 400. (But it is not the best choice, if you need Pi-cameras connection.)

    Provided what issues we have to deal with at large with supply chain problems and chip shortages, I have my doubts this will change either.
    Also speaking about that exact 3D model, I found the same few days back on Thingiverse which made me actually consider to order a Pi400 set in one or two days.
    Since its price is still acceptable here in Germany, things could be worse.

    I haven't bought one as I believe Pi foundation missed a trick with the design. Running the 400 from an SD card is useless. There is tons of room inside the unit. Why was a SATA, ESATA or M.2 interface not included for internal mass storage? Until then it's not really useful for me. I'm hoping the next version will have mass storage facilities of some sort, especially as the pi can now boot directly from a hard disk.

    What IMHO would improve the 400 and the Pi 4 or 5 if we ever see it is the addition of an M.2 slot .
    There is nothing wrong with the 400 but many already have a Pi 4 so buying the 400 is a waste of money , if on the other hand you are new to the world of Pi then the 400 is an option one should consider as it really gives good bang for your buck - just add a monitor or plug it into your tv and you are good to go and it still has the same GPIO pins . The only thing it doesn't have id the 3.5 mm audio jack and the onboard camera socket . The 400 keyboard isn't anything special and I do have some issues with mine which disappear if I use Bluetooth keyboard so I guess it has to do with the keyboard control board and I think this would be rectified if they used a decent controller.
    Funny thing is that even though I have a PC that will eat any Pi any day of the week I still use my 400 for watching UA-cam most of the time and I love the freedom and simplicity or the operating system - no gimmicks , no bloatware , no constantly wanting to send some information back to Microsoft or updating when you don't want it to .
    The Pi in it's various forms has bought affordable computing and programming to the people - long live the Pi !
