    I love this series! Something that could also be helpful for a person like me is to take us to a house that landscaped “right.” In the sense, that when you tell us what you would do, show us an example of how that looks in real life. Thank you for these incredible videos!

    Funny Erin from Impatient Gardner did a how to redesign on a yard on a corner she passed every day going to work. They had planted 8 or 10 arborvitae along the front and side of their house. Looked like your typical home installation. She show how she would recommend designing it.
    Must be design week. ❤❤❤❤love all the great ideas!

    Thank you for this Kate! I’ve been trying to design 2 areas in my front yard which has 2 large blank walls with 1 being the side of the garage which faces the street, then the front house facade near porch ( with 7 Steps and on lower end of a slope. It’s perplexed me for years and I ripped it out several times and now I’m starting over again! I’m going to try this method. Thank for educating us! You’re so good girl! 👩‍🌾❤️🪴💐🐝

    This video is a keeper. It makes the garden design process feel manageable. My main pain points are slopes going in every direction in my garden. Photos and graph paper, here I come. 😊

    I have gardened in the PNW for 30 years and I attended the school of hard knocks gardening. Thank you for giving me words to describe what I have come to understand over the years. I learned something new today from you. Paying attention to the shape of the house in determining which plant shapes will work best. Thank You!!! QUESTION...What type of tall Taxus are we seeing behind you in the video?. I am planting for drought tolerence these days.
    And Honorine Jobert. LOVE her!!! Please show her off in a video next fall.

    When you pushed aside the rolls of drawings and pulled out the notebook and shapes something clicked for me! I've been intimidated to try my hand at my own designs because I have a difficult time imagining shape and scale. But I feel like if I take a shape-first approach and use inexpensive materials (pencil and paper) then I can start to get the ideas out of my head. This is an incredibly useful video, thank you!
    For this series I suggest doing a video about how to add on to an existing "good plan" without creating a disjointed Frankenstein garden.

    Hi Kate, one of the key factors as I’m enhancing my garden is to not create structures where raccoons will climb ! My neighbour behind me has a beautiful pond, but that’s why the raccoons love climbing the mature basswood tree to keep an eye on those fish! However, you are correct about windows showing beauty as we look out them! That is a major factor for me in my plant choices , especially when we have such a long winter!❄️🥰🌸🇨🇦

    • @HelloGarden
      @HelloGarden  День тому +1

      Oh man. Those ponds… you gotta be ready for the riffraff. 😆 And I should’ve pointed it out, but my basalt bird bath is centered on the livingroom window so even when all the beds are empty, I have a little spot to look at from my reading nook on the couch. 💕

    Hello! From Pasadena! We made through the Eaton fire but the devastation is heavy on my heart. The ash is toxic along with the air so my garden will have to wait. I will be going to the show and can’t wait to be inspired with your design. Meanwhile I do have a few problem areas and will enjoy these tool to create a more useable and a spot more pleasing to the eye from the pool. So, thank you! ♥️

    These tips came in perfect timing! I'm thinking of expanding my front porch bed the length of the house incorporating a fairly large walnut tree with a wide canopy at the corner. My concern has been that when the large leaves fall from the walnut it's going to be a mess and more difficult to clean up that just raking the grass. I gave up on the idea last year but I still keep thinking about it so maybe it's a sign to keep going with the idea!

    • @MyFocusVaries
      @MyFocusVaries 18 годин тому

      Are you aware of juglone, the substance walnuts produce, that inhibits many/most other plants' growth? Anything in their root zone, and where the leaves fall will have growth inhibited. Some plants won't grow at all.

      Could a well placed fountain help drown it out? We also have road noise and I hope that with a layered shrub border and a loud fountain, we can eliminate some of it.

    • @debs-more-plants
      @debs-more-plants 15 годин тому

      @ we put one on our deck and it’s lovely but doesn’t drown out those loud cars. I think they are even illegal but law enforcement can’t keep up and ignores them. Kids cruise the beach in summer so they added speed cameras for racing but they get just past them and rev the engine! I’m adding more layers to the garden and hope that it helps! Best to you!

I will be working on two new garden bed areas this spring! * I have grass irrigation throughout my lawn ( prev owners) I am concerned about plant roots finding their way into lines or choking the lines… I am planning that I will be planting within 6 inches of a few areas.. are there any plants you would Avoid? * I really would like a HAKURO NISHIKI' DAPPLED WILLOW (SALIX), though know their roots are water hungry! Thank you for sharing your knowledge!

    Love this video. A huge inspiration. I have been looking at the garden at my business and know it needs a re-do. This is a 250 year old house where we have a hair/skin studio. I love this old building, it has multiple mature trees. A huge magnolia, red maple and a big holly. But I recently removed 3 large oak leaf hydrangeas, that I probably should never have planted in the bed along the driveway. The deer pressure has become more of a problem, so my bushes and perennials are constantly being munched on. Lots of gorgeous echinaceas that should be divided. So for the last few months I have been thinking that this spring I have a big job ahead. I want to redo these beds. Replace the boxwoods that aren’t getting enough light or just is overgrown. I do have a lot of beautiful plants that I want to keep, like ferns, hydrangeas, hellebores etc. so I’m definitely going to the art supply store and pick up some supplies and try this. Oh, this was a long one, sorry. Thanks again for your inspiration ❤

    Love this! Moved into a house with a challenging front landscape- you drive down the street viewing the back of the house, so the front of the house, the part facing the road, has no front door!! Additionally, it has a porch wrapped around the side that faces the street that isn't wide enough to even put a chair! It's a mess. Would love to hear your thoughts and know what you see when you look at it!

    Great advice! We did the typical “ foundation “ plants that everyone was doing and have since expanded our horizons with variety! Wish I’d “ mapped “ things out from the start. But I guess I need to give myself some grace…nobody thought about these things 30 years ago. Better now than never! Zone3 Manitoba 🇨🇦❄️👏

    Hi Kate 👋 I really needed this! I have a MAJOR pain point... We have a 6 car Concrete driveway South facing, that leads up to the front door and doesn't leave room between us and the neighbors (which we dearly love) We have 6 of our windows looking out on it. Zone 9b Texas Gulf Coast. I am thinking only potted plants of course but, the added heat from the Concrete and a light gray house, with the already super humid and hot weather... I wondered if I should try to find plants a Zone higher? (Full Sun from the east as well as the south) I hope this makes sense. (?) And I would sooo appreciate your knowledge and expertise to help me make this beautiful. TYIA 😊 Jen

    Hi, it would be nice, if you can give some ideas for small gardens. Trees that will not overgrow. Trees, that can be shaped. Which evergreen shrubs are suitable? Also some suggestions for hight and privacy in a small garden (for eg. climbers on a fence, ideas to fix them). Thank you very much in advance. ❤. I love your videos. Greetings from Germany😊

    Ok Kate, I"ve been struggling with this for years.... I live in a Raised Ranch and the front door faces my neighbor.
    Therefore a blank wall faces the street (very awkward looking). The bottom half of that wall is just cement colored wall til it reaches the tan siding :(... thought maybe 3 pencil holies to give it some color...or would that look to boring and industrial like?
    Have a tiny front yard so can't go with anything to wide :( Can I be your first project ? 😂
