You are so kind. I actually really love teaching and passing along knowledge! Are there any other plants that you find particularly confusing? I'm happy to make a video on it!
What a beast! Please show us what it looks like when you are finished and then again when it blooms. Would be so cool to see a before picture last summer when it was in full bloom and then this year after pruning.
I give you kudos for taking on a tough subject and doing a stellar job of illustrating the how to of this task. I've been up amidst the vines myself and know that the "spaghetti mess" can feel overwhelming. Art and science indeed! Thanks for the clear tutorial! You are an accomplished plantswoman!
Well that's one of the kindest compliments ever! It's a big job, but I just take a deep breath and go slow and steady. And it's the perfect opportunity to put on an audio book and get into a groove!
i love some wisteria. it makes me happy when i see it because i know spring is near. loved the video. thank you for sharing. hope you have a great day!!!
It’s so gorgeous where it’s situated because it blooms right where we open our living room and dining room windows! We are lucky that this one is so well behaved because they can be an absolute BEAST.
Enjoyed this video! You said investment…I’m sure you meant invasive!!!😂 Down here in southeast Alabama, we’re very familiar with wisteria. Yes, it is beautiful when it blooms but can take over acres in the wild. I have American (Evergreen) wisteria which is much more manageable. I have it growing on lattice (of course lattice, we’re in the south!) for privacy and is perfect for that. Still requires maintenance 2 or 3 times a summer. Blooms are dark magenta. LOVE your coat with the errant feathers!
I live in zone 9b (California) and during the 8 month growing season my wisteria needs pruning about every six weeks. Then there is flower drop after blooming, leave drop in the fall and seed pod clipping when they start to pop , so there aren't baby wisteria everywhere. Plus winter pruning!! Eeek!!!
Omg! I have been trying to kill a wisteria for the last 30 years. I gave up about 10 years ago when we got a new fence, so I decided to let it climb up the fence. I have to admit it was beautiful when it bloomed. But it took over and totally ruined the fence. So I am back to trying to kill it again. It is beautiful if you have the right space for it, otherwise it is super invasive. 😅
I've heard that story many times. 🤪 It’s such a beast but this one has been relatively under control! I think it helps that the roots are in deep shade.
I too have been battling wisteria. It destroyed part of my garage roof. I would trim it down to roots and it grows so fast. I would cut it after first bloom and would get a 2nd bloom.
So, being new to all of this, I was always told that you shouldn't take more than 20-30% of the plant or you risk shocking and killing the plant....is that a wives tale or is it legit but only for certain types of plants?!?!?!?!
That is a great and common rule of thumb, but it also doesn't apply to all plants. For most ornamental trees, it's absolutely appropriate! For a robust vine like wisteria, you absolutely need to take off all those long whips and a more rejuvinating prune won't hurt it. Other vines, such as my Cecile Brunner rose, I've taken completely down to the ground and had it regrow from the base. There are also certain twig dogwoods that benefit from an aggressive cut back, for example. Always give a good google search before pruning.
Woah! Wisteria is the perfect case of "know before you plant". It's absolutely lovely in the right circumstance... and a total nightmare if mishandled.
@ that being said - yes it’s beautiful BUT here in GA we have acres and acres of it growing up trees On the side of roads all over the state! People may put it in , care for it then move and the next homeowner is not a gardener or just doesn’t care for it . I’ve seen it go unchecked , take down barns , kill trees! So there’s that ! Come spring time I’ll have to share photos!
PLEASE make this into a series of how to care, what it looks like in the spring, how it grows back, how to maintain all this work next fall.
You are so kind. I actually really love teaching and passing along knowledge! Are there any other plants that you find particularly confusing? I'm happy to make a video on it!
@@HelloGardenKate!! I inherited an out of control Cecile Bruner 😬It needs a do-over prune.
I hope you show us the finished look. I always wanted one and was hoping to incorporate into our new garden here in Michigan.
Oh yes. It’s going to be on my February garden tour… don’t you worry. 🤭

Thank you so much for all this great info. We have a huge Wisteria that we've let go crazy and we're always trying to tame it!

I LOVE 😍 wisteria, but it is sooooo invasive here in zone 8b AL! But still beautiful! 💜
Also, I've seen wisteria easily snap a 4" x 4" post so agree, anything that dimension or smaller will succumb to the force of the twisting stems.
I've seen it happen on several occasions. I've also seen it take down an entire pergola. But man it's gorgeous when grown well on a proper structure!
Wow! Impressive Kate! So satisfying though! It will look so gorgeous when done! Great job!
I’m feeling pretty good about this prune! and it's sooooo satisfying to see that big jumble of branches on the ground.
Well apparently I need this particular video Kate! Thanks! I hope it will bloom this year as it doesn’t bloom anymore. 😢
Fingers crossed! With a little TLC, I hope it returns to it's blooming glory!

Automatic pruners are great for something like this
With something like this growing over a structure, do you have to worry about branches crossing each other & possibly rubbing? Great video Kate!
Wow look at that trunk. Girl you have alot of patience ❤❤❤
I love getting in a groove when pruning, but you’re right. It’s going to take a few hours to even get 15 feet done in that giant tangle of vines!

Oh yeah. It’s not invasive up here but man oh man. You gotta be ready for the work!

That’s definitely a lot more work than I need to invest. I’ve got it easy up here in the north. 😜

Cut it back all the way then paint on 'Stump and Vine' Killer

👍🥰🌸
💕🌻😊
'Amethyst Falls' Wisteria isnt nearly as aggressive
I love wisteria but it’s too labor intensive for me. I’ll just enjoy it in someone else’s garden. 😁
I’m glad you can enjoy it vicariously through my garden. 😉

@@HelloGarden Thanks so much for the info, Kate!!!
Honestly, I love your comment so much. There is so much to learn in the garden and it’s full of nuance. I’m so happy you all ask questions!
