What challenges do you have building rapport with people?

I work with children and adolescents. I have difficulty building rapport with some of these kids who 1: dont want to be here or 2: dont really recognize their experiences.

How can rapport be developed with a client who has Avoidant Personality Disorder? Given that simple, ordinary social interactions are fraught with shame and distrust, then the required intimate communications of therapy would be exponentially more so, triggering the avoidance reflex.
