    @DarcMac actually if we kept our old ponchos they would be great but the tarps that are issued now are of a lighter weight and i would not like to rip them. you are right mate even our tarps have more damage from being used as stretchers than thorns but i still would not like to risk it. thank you very much for commenting mate.

    I use a climbing accessory cord rather than paracord for my ridgeline and its 7mm thick

    In America Army surplus stores carry items that are given up by soldiers.
    The stores do not bother to inspect, wash or repair the items. Something like a wool blanket is usually in poor shape.

    Keep in mind this is a very good inexpensive kit for warm weather and in the absence of strong wind.
    And if you obtain anything from the surplus army store be sure to wash it at least 3x in hot water with detergent and dry on high in the dryer. Or simply dry clean once. This will kill off all the bed bugs/fleas/ticks and eggs which are always present in surplus clothing/blankets.
    For colder weather, wrap the blanket over and under/around the sling, so it hangs/lays loosely around the body.

    ye i have been toying with the idea for a little while and have decided on the kit that i want to use for a solo trip i will be doing for 4 days, so should be a good tester for the British army wool blanket.

    @DarcMac but then you would loose its durability in the bush, thats why i wrap the blanket on the outside, because it resists more spikes and thorns.
    thank you for your comments

    I think they are to tie into the blanket, instead of a clasp or pushing a stick through, to help form a cloak.

    its around 2.7m x 3.5m they can be obtained in various sizes in this type. there is not a standard size for the scrote blanket

    good luck mate and let me know how you get on,

    @DarcMac
    I had to go through 5 army blankets to find one that didn't have hoes in them.
    The first wash was dark grey. Maybe the government washed them and it got dirty in the store, but the quality of the used equipment were terrible.

    @DarcMac
    I guess I shouldn't complain.
    Though the design and quality are very poor and often very outdated, the prices are cheap.

    not quite sure where you get your surplus gear from but my stores actually wash or get brand new stuff. i would change your store if i was you or barter the price hugely!!

    @sirblaise011 hey mate, you cannot get these snap gates any longer as they were a one off trial given to some climbers in a competition i was in a long time ago.
    There are new very lightweight snaps on the market that are strong enough for climbing but very small, check out CAMP NANO in google.

    I have an Italian Army blanket and it weighs 2 kg. It is very warm and its dimensions are 213cm by 162cm (84" by 64" to our American brothers). It would be a perfect bush blanket if it was just a little wider, as it's hard to do a full wrap up in it. Don't believe all the hype about not being able to get rid of the mothball smell. A few hours soaking in eucalyptus wool mix and a few days on the line and it smells only of - wool!

    Very cool man.I backpack but I'm getting older and really tired of hulling a crap load of gear 10 miles up at13k feet..Thinking of getting a few Maxpeditions and using this system. Wool blankets and emergency blanket together make a very warm combo.Thanks for the idea. If you ever back pack mate maybe make a video on winter hiking using this method. Would love to see. Was thinking of using 2 out of 3 as add-on Maxpedition Thermite Versipack ,Maxpedition Malaga Gearslinger & 3rd which isnt a maxpediton but a Ribz Front Pack . Haven't decided which of the 2 I like most.Whats is your thoughts on it.Have a good one m8

    Internet shopping. Shop every major outdoors store in the world.
    Shipping is usually cheap or free.
    Get the best prices and widest selection.
    Unless that is you have some sadistic loyalty to local business men who abuse their customers.
