I sailed a Pacific Cat for 25 years with my family and had a great time. Have sailed mono hulls for 40 years even while I still had a cat and I find for me a mono hull is the only way to go. In the last 25 years builders have made mono hulls lighter, brighter, roomy, and better to sail. Hence I vote mono, but that’s for me. Cheers Chris, all I want to do is go sailing the hell with the rest of the BS!! Enough said!
Spot on Chris! Too many watch UA-cam catamaran channels and don’t really understand the differences. Thanks for educating them. Today’s mono’s are the much better value and do not sacrifice comfort at all. And, you have the option of heeling should you want it. You can get an awesome brand new monohull in the 35’-40’ range, as you keep saying, for under $300k, or a great slightly used one for half that. Try finding a used cat for under $300k. The refit cost will be over 100k, then dockage is at least 1.5 or 2x the cost of a mono. Cats can be great vessels, but are way overpriced. Also, I know sailors who have the same mono’s for decades. Most cats are bought and sold within 5 years. Why? Partly maintenance and repair costs. I’m sure you will be covering these realities, and more, in future episodes. Keep up the honest, good work!
I know for my family of 4, the difference comes down to time at anchor. They watched mono hulls pitch and roll all over the place while our cat barely seemed to move. This is a point that also has to be considered and like you say the best boat for you is the one that works best for your situation.
OMG, I selfishly feel like I was the cause behind today’s video, this was great and really elaborated on your reply to my question about heeling on a mono hull, thx. It certainly gave me a lot of food for thought. I watched this video several times.
I am also curious about the differences in insurance costs and insurance limitations?
@ABC gang Yes but It seems like insurance companies generally put more limitations on catamarans as far as how far north or south they may go etc. Do they generally charge more for catamarans compared to monohulls at the same value?

Now Chris you learn a lot about your boat on the hard. Hey there are no leaks and that engine is so quiet that you can sleep thru it all. Also no rolling or pitching when trying to sleep. So why would you ever want to leave the hard. hahaha😛🤙
Love the mono hulls , cats are good but like a motorhome on the water , often hard to find somewhere to haul out (more than likely always to wide for the lifts) and twice the expense at service times
I grew up on the water, I learned on a monohull and I primarily single hand. CATs have a place in polite society, but for me, I can tell how a mono is sailing way better from inside the cabin than I can on a CAT. When sailing by feel, I only get that feeling from a monohull

Hello, I was wondering if you could explain why a large disparity between the LWL and LOA would lead to increased heeling? I’m a novice here, but I thought it’d only depend on a wider beam and a deeper draft, no? Thanks for all your hard work in educating us with your wonderfully informative videos!
Hey mark, it's one aspect, the vessel with the larger discrepancy needs to heel in order to increase the length at the water line in order to reach cruising speed
I would love to have a cat, but... I honestly don't have the money for it. So its mono-hauls for me. Everything from the boat itself to slip fees are increased dramatically. That being said one thing nice about a cat, especially these days, is the with all that deck space you can put an ass load of solar panels on it. Nice for living off the grid. Their is a reason after all that "solar boats" (boats that only have electric motors and no sails)" tend to be cats.
Who knows maybe I can get one of those nice, wide mono-hauls in 20 years when they come down to reasonable price on the used sailboat market :)

If I may ask another question, I’m not 21 anymore and prefer not to be constantly in the sun, the other reason I leaned towards cats was being able to stay in the shade for the most part while sailing, is it possible to accomplish this on a more modern sailboat? It would keep my dermatologist happy. Thx!

Not familiar with newer mono hulls ? I despise classic mono hulls but the newer ones, especially hybrid deck salons and true deck salons are phenomenal, is take one over a cat everyday
@@ChasingLatitudes thank you! but also the deck space. On a lot of (35-45ft) mono’s try to find a nice spot for two person to sunbathe, difficult.
If planning to be at anchor more than sailing; i think a cat just gives you more living space and less rolling motion while at anchor.

Running costs different? How much typical over 5 years? How about learning to sail on 1 vs the other…. I’ve “heard “ sailing a cat is not a good way to learn…. But I’m an arm chair sailor - minus childhood sunfish and RYA comp crew… buying a live aboard in about a year to finish off my career as a 100% remote worker… then Boom! Come on sailboat market!!! Everyone BUY A CAT!!!! You know you want one!!!!
so if we don't heel the boat, can you still get the same speeds that you would if you did? Also don't you get more rolling around at anchor too?

Of course you had to show photos of the Jeanneau 440! Soul crushing! Can afford one new and even if I could there is a long waitlist of at least a year. "You're Killin' me Smalls!" And as it relates to this discussion... You will pay more than twice as much for a cat with similar room. It is a fact. If you are rolling in dough and can afford that God bless you. I am happy for you. Us mere mortals will be true sailors on our mono hulls and just as comfortable at less than half the cost. Yes I said "true sailor". Cruising Cats are sail by numbers. You don't get the same feel and connection to the wind and water that you do on a mono hull. And if you haven't sailed a mono hull and a cat is your dream that is fine. But you just don't know. Sorry kids. It is what it is.
