Nice review. I’m looking for a long lens. Right now the first version is on sale but seems more annoying to carry just by the length of the lens since it doesn’t weigh that much more In general I’ve stayed from lenses that are heavy but I do like the reach that 70-200mm provides
Thank you! From a carrying perspective, it doesn't make a big difference in my opinion. It packs better for carry-on luggage, but that's it. If you have the budget, I'd go for the new one. It just offers the better package. However, the first version is still a very good lens though. If you're only worried about the size, and don't need any of the new features, go ahead and buy the first version, you won't regret it. For most usecases, the first version is still completely viable. I also still use it, since I only had the second one for testing, and didn't see a need for a switch.
@@torbenmayer The universe was looking out for me , I got blessed with a 2.8 G master version ii . I’m gonna try it out with a friend and decide if it’s worth the extra weight of carrying or go with the version ii f4
@MoonbearDiedHere love to hear it! Let me know what you go for, interested in hearing that! I didn’t have the chance to test the 2.8 versions unfortunately. If you’d like to help me out so I can check out new lenses in the future, consider subscribing, thank you :)
Nice comparison! I agree about the extending zoom, it's easier to pack which is significant but the internal zoom is nicer in user, quicker to zoom, and personally I trust it slightly more if there's a light rain going on. The macro functionality is nice but if one already has a macro lens one likes to use..and the price of the new one is x2 as you say. And with the Tamron 70-180 g2 and upcoming Sigma..there sure are options.
Thank you! I wouldn't worry to much about rain to be fair. I've used my 24-70 GM 2, which also has the extending zoom, in quite a bit of rain last year and it was totally fine. Just dried it up no problem. But I get your point, it's just one possible point of entry more. I think the way to go if you don't need the macro function will be the upcoming sigma. If I had to guess it will cost at most as much as the 70-200 G 2 and therefore will be the way better option due to it being a 2.8 lens for the same price - or probably less.
