Shot on Sony A7SIII with Sony 200-600G Lens. Recorded with the Ninja V in ProResRAW. Too bad UA-cam makes it a little worse quality, especially in low light scenes this is a real bummer. First 3 1/2-ish minutes were shot at 600m, rest was shot at 250mm. Would've shot at 600mm all the way, but you notice all these little bumps in the video. They were from the camera wobbling from the little wind...

    Thanks for posting. I was on a shoot in a forest with four batteries that were fully charged but in sleep mode. Killed the entire shoot. No way to wake them up, unless we drove back into town found a AC outlet and charge them awake. Maybe this feature saves the batteries, but it certainly kills a shoot. Now I know.

      @torbenmayer 5 місяців тому

      You're welcome! Yeah it certainly is something that should be mentioned in the manual somwehere. For me it's now a habit of plugging it into the charger the day before the shoot, even when I'm sure 70% will last me as long as I need to shoot. Just to avoid getting it into sleep mode the day of shooting.

    Nice review. I’m looking for a long lens. Right now the first version is on sale but seems more annoying to carry just by the length of the lens since it doesn’t weigh that much more In general I’ve stayed from lenses that are heavy but I do like the reach that 70-200mm provides

    • @torbenmayer
      @torbenmayer 7 місяців тому

      Thank you! From a carrying perspective, it doesn't make a big difference in my opinion. It packs better for carry-on luggage, but that's it. If you have the budget, I'd go for the new one. It just offers the better package. However, the first version is still a very good lens though. If you're only worried about the size, and don't need any of the new features, go ahead and buy the first version, you won't regret it. For most usecases, the first version is still completely viable. I also still use it, since I only had the second one for testing, and didn't see a need for a switch.

    Nice comparison! I agree about the extending zoom, it's easier to pack which is significant but the internal zoom is nicer in user, quicker to zoom, and personally I trust it slightly more if there's a light rain going on. The macro functionality is nice but if one already has a macro lens one likes to use..and the price of the new one is x2 as you say. And with the Tamron 70-180 g2 and upcoming Sigma..there sure are options.

    • @torbenmayer
      @torbenmayer Рік тому

      Thank you! I wouldn't worry to much about rain to be fair. I've used my 24-70 GM 2, which also has the extending zoom, in quite a bit of rain last year and it was totally fine. Just dried it up no problem. But I get your point, it's just one possible point of entry more. I think the way to go if you don't need the macro function will be the upcoming sigma. If I had to guess it will cost at most as much as the 70-200 G 2 and therefore will be the way better option due to it being a 2.8 lens for the same price - or probably less.

      @torbenmayer Рік тому

      Yeah that's correct. It was shot under quite difficult conditions, so having no lens flare from the beginning is hard for any lens. But I think considering I didn't reduce it at all in post (since I do like a little flare), it's not too bad after all.

      You're welcome and thanks for the feedback! I actually don't know unfortunately. I would think that it only would work as a pass through while using it, but not charging. Since all three ports on the Titon Base can be used for charging as well as powering devices, I would think that both batteries than would just start looping (or more likely do nothing), since they won't know which one is charging and which one is being charged. I think it would only work if it had a clear input/charge only connector. However, I'm about to reach out to Anton Bauer in the next days for something different anyways, and I will ask them about it while I'm at it. I'll get back to you asap!

    This review is fantastic! I shoot urban and street photography in London and Tokyo, and plan to get my first FE zoom lens as a travel lens. I’ve been a prime only shooter for years, but started wanting to avoid changing lenses as often as possible Would you recommend getting this over the Sony 20-70/4 or the Tamron 35-150/2-2.8? Thanks!

    • @torbenmayer
      @torbenmayer Рік тому

      Thanks so much for your feedback! I know the struggle, it's basically why I choose to get this lens, to avoid changing it all the time. It depends. I haven't had the chance to use any of those two, but here are my thoughts from just the specs and experiences I had over the last year: For the 20-70: I feel the 24mm is wide enough for most pictures in cities. In New York and London I rarely used my 14mm because the 24mm was wide enough; thinking about it I probably only used the 14mm for skyline timelapse shots. And I think the better aperture makes it more versatile, especially in low light conditions, which can appear real fast in cites, even at day. I'd personally favor this over a slightly wider angle. So I think the G-Master is the better choice in 95% of the time. For the Tamron: What's a little bit annoying is that the G-Master only goes to 70mm. I took a few pics with my 85mm prime and these were amazing in New York and among my favorites from the whole trip. The Tamron seems like a very solid choice, since you get a halfway decent angle for wider shots, but can go a lot deeper with the 150mm. And it also has a nice aperture. I'd love to have a bigger zoom, but at the same time I would carry an additional wide angle lens with me as well, since 35mm isn't going to cut it for me. It's hard to say. I think it's a question of what focal lengths you mostly use in street and urban. If you rarely ever use something over 85mm, I'd go with the G-Master and just crop it from 70mm if needed and call it a day. If it's the opposite and you mostly shoot with 85/105/135 etc. the Tamron would be the obvious choice, however, you would need a second lens if you ever need a wide angle. I guess the conclusion would be: If you're currently primarily shooting with primes 105mm or higher get the Tamron. In any other case I'd get the G-Master. You can alway upscale in Lightroom and crop in just a little bit further if absolutely needed. With the Tamron you can never crop out to get a wider angle. I think the G-Master is the safer bet. And from my personal experience: I've never felt like I made a mistake taking just the 24-70 around the city. It would've been nice to have a higher zoom for some pictures, but the amount of pictures I took at 24mm is a lot bigger. If you have any further questions or comments feel free to let me know!

    • @Sparky_oto
      @Sparky_oto Рік тому

      @@torbenmayer Thanks! This is very much a first world problem, with all these amazing lenses to consider. I also have the 14/1.8, 24/1.8, 40/2.5 and 85/1.4, so this zoom is really there for the convenience of having a do-it-all lens when I’m on the move. It sounds like I can’t go wrong with either the Sony 24-70/2.8 GMII or 20-70/4, which ultimately comes down to aperture / slightly better optics vs wider range / price saving. From what I’ve read online about image quality, 24-70/2.8GMII seems to be a hair sharper than 20-70/4 at f4, plus the full stop advantage of f2.8 which will no doubt come in handy as a low light handheld zoom option without needing to push ISO / rely on a tripod. The T35-150 sounds tempting, especially because the extra reach of 70-150mm does fit my shooting style more so than the 20-35mm range. But you’re absolutely on point too, as I’ll ultimately carry another zoom to cover the wider end of the zoom range. Carrying two lenses in this case more or lens negates the point of using the much heavier T35-150 as an all-purpose lens (especially on full-day city walks). But again, a very very good problem to have and I’m sure whatever I ended up going with will make a great shooting experience! Thanks for the above :)

      @torbenmayer Рік тому

      @oliverthompson4048 Happy to help! I unfortunately can't help you with RAW files from the 20-70/4 to peak into them, but if you find some you can compare them to the ones I uploaded in the description from the 24-70/2.8 GMII. Or you can try to ask in a camera store to use the lenses for a bit. Usually they are willing to let you shoot some pictures around the store or on the street in front of it, if you leave your ID or something like that. At least in Germany this works fine. Just make sure to bring a camera and your SD card and compare the pictures at home on your computer. The extra aperture stop helps a lot. I've only been using my tripod for shooting one timelapse in New York, everything else I shot was handheld. At least New York and London have been bright enough to get away with a max ISO 1000. And if you are at the river shooting the skyline, there is always a wall or pillar to set your camera up. For New York it was basically useless bringing it, for London I was confident enough to only bring a Gorillapod (I didn't end up using) for emergencies. Feel free to keep me updated on what you got when you made your decision! Also, the point brought up by @summonedfist is a valid one. On of the biggest wins of the GM II is the weight. I haven't had issues carrying it with a strap across my chest the whole day. And yes, not having a tripod mount on the lens feels a little bit odd, especially since Sony already showed how you can make one that you can easily remove if you don't need it. What also just came to my mind for your city trips: If you bring a backpack for food and snacks, you might want to take a look into PeakDesign's Capture Clip, if you haven't already. I have two (on on each strap), and they are amazing to carry around cameras while having quick access. I've mostly used them when I didn't want to carry a heavy lens across my chest or in a crowded area, to secure the camera to more than just a strap. They are available with two base plates (normal with Arca compability, dual with Arca and Manfrotto) and these work on quite a lot of standard tripod mounts. I'm about to make a video about everything I have from PeakDesign soon-ish. But to cut it short: Everything they make is not cheap, but it's great quality and really useful.

    IMPORTANT UPDATE: 05/18/2022 ua-cam.com/video/VLEorvBz0OU/v-deo.html This week, I received an e-mail from the Anton/Bauer (Vitec) support, which has read the comments and wanted to get in touch on what my question were, since they weren't able to find my request. So I asked them the open questions I had and got a response the very next day. I will quote the answers so there is no misunderstanding. Also, I will make a short update video with these questions answered in the next few days. Regarding "sleep mode" and that you have to plug it into the charger to wake it up: "This is quite normal behavior, the battery if not used for a period of time (30 days) will go into a protective ‘sleep mode’ exactly how you’ve described. This is to protect the battery cells so it’s not always on. To wake them up as you’ve found out you have to plug them into a charger in this case the P-Tap charger. All Anton/Bauer batteries have this built in, it protects them and prolongs the life of them when your not using them." - This is what I thought was the reason, it just would've been nice to have this information in the manual, and I've already suggested that this information gets into the manual. Regarding would it be okay to charge the battery and simultaneously use it to power your devices: "Yes this would be ok." - Suggested this as an information for the manual as well. Regarding the missing documentation with the product/on the website (it is available on the website now) : "We produce manuals for all our batteries it’s a legal requirement to be able to ship them, maybe you missed it first time around but it’s been there. I’ll attach again." - This seems pretty legit and I think that maybe I got a returned and repacked unit from the seller in Germany, where the manual has been lost on the way. That's quite possible and not a problem now, since the manual is now available on the website; most importantly, that's not the fault of the manufacturer. Regarding my confusion of D-Tap and P-Tap: "There’s a bit of a story behind this, as well as inventing the gold mount battery Anton/Bauer invented P-Tap, it’s a registered trademark. You tend to find depending on where you are in the world that some people call it P-Tap and others call it D-tap. You can read a bit more about our history and trademarks here www.antonbauer.com/en/about-antonbauer/the-antonbauer-story/. You tend to find that in the US people use P-Tap more and over in Europe D-Tap is the preferred term." - Basically, I understood the situation correct. I want to give very big Kudos to the customer support at this point, even though I only have 19 subscribers at this point and this video got just over 1200 views, they reached out to me, and actively went to help me as much as I wanted to. That's what I love to see, especially from a big company (or group of companies in this case). If you have any further questions, feel free to put them below, I'll give my best to answer them or find the answer. Cheers!

      Thanks for your comment and your suggestion! :) I guess besides all I still would recommend this battery as the go to. Overall the pros outweigh the cons, and If you know what to look for (LCD going to sleep), it's still excellent to work with. I basically use it all the time, since I found a better way to mount it to my gimbal as well. I got some offers from different brands after this video, who wanted me to test out their products, but I didn't feel that any of them were as good as this one, but I have not tested them, because I have a long list of videos prepared that I want to get finished like 2 months ago. I already have plans for an out in the field microphone video, but I need to understand everything regarding sound a little bit better first, right now it's my biggest weakness. There will be a video at some point in the future, but probably not for the next 1-2 months. However, for outdoor shoots I either use the Rode Videomic Pro (the old one from 10 years ago) when I want to capture some overall scene, ambient, cars, etc. or the Rodelink Filmmaker Kit for a lavalier mic to capture myself. That being said, I'm trying to implement a direct comparison for that video, with the wireless go II and maybe some other alternatives. We'll see soon(-ish).
