Basset Hounds are considered a large breed, they might not look it because they are vertically challenged but they often weigh 60+ lbs (even those who aren't very chonky like this meatloaf❤)
It's a little-known fact but Basset Hounds are actually excellent at preventing robberies. By the time the burglar has finished stealing everything, the Basset will have fallen asleep in an inconvenient place, tripping the burglar and causing serious injury.

I've heard similar things said about corgis too, but that they get in the burglar's way because they want to play, and the burglar won't see them because they're so short. I used to have a corgi and he was _always_ underfoot. For him it was food-related most of the time.
I have had 6 of them, 2 of which are in my backyard right now. When you see them on TV, they are portrayed as lazy, but every one of my bassets were playful and had high energy.

And I didn’t say obesity was desirable, just not the worst possible outcome. And the dog is clearly happy. They feel happy through pain. Its whats so precious about them.

He seems like such a sweet boy and super cute❤ I do not mean to sound harsh or cruel when I say this but, please think about talking to your veterinarian about a diet plan for this sweetie. I had a shih shztu mix that passed away about 3 years ago from congestive heart failure. She was quite overweight most of her life and I admit that I was not as strict with her diet as I should have been. She was 10 years old when she was diagnosed with CHF. Her weight was a main factor in causing the CHF. Once she was diagnosed with it, I immediately did everything in power to get her weight down. She began to get a healthier weight but unfortunately it was too late. She passed away about 6 months after being diagnosed with CHF. I still blame and hate myself everyday for not being more careful about what and how much she ate. I miss her so much and I wish I could have done better for her. So I hope that you keep this in mind and I wish you and Meatball all the best❤
This comment is needed. I'm a veterinary nurse, and people have no idea how common it is for dogs to pass away or need to be euthanised due to weight-related illnesses. It saddens me to see how much the internet glorifies obese animals.
Thank you for telling your story and admitting you made mistakes. It can be so hard to admit things like that so I commend you. My dog just died yesterday of congestive heart failure and dementia at 18. He was always a healthy weight so we think his CHF was due to age. My regrets are getting too frustrated when I began to experience caregiver burnout from his numerous medical needs. I know I did all I could to prolong his life even when he became very high maintenance and extremely needy. But I wish I’d had more patience with him and hid my frustration/ exasperation over his various issues. It wasn’t his fault he was sick and old. I’m sure your dog was very loved, most chubby dogs are since their parents can’t seem to say no to them. 😂 It’s hard when you have to live with the fact that you weren’t always the perfect pet parent. Please don’t beat yourself up too much, I’m sure you gave her a wonderful life in many ways.
Hi, RVT working with cardiologist vet here, please don't be so hard on yourself there's no one to blame, I'd even say there's a high chance that her being fit wouldn't change a thing - first, shih tzu are just very prone to cardiovascular dieseases and it's quite common for them, and second, like approx 70% of our cardio patients are fit
With long dogs in particular you also have to be careful about weight because it can raise the risk of ivvd (a spine disease that can paralyze their back end). Our dachshund just had a very mild case of it (he's doing fine now, thankfully) but it was terrible to see him stumbling around, and if it hadn't gotten better, the surgery to fix it would have been around $10k. I think Bassett hounds are less prone to it than dachshunds, but it's still something to watch out for, especially if you see your dog having trouble with it's back legs.

I got a basset she a good weight but it's like she has never been fed when it comes to food and she knows where to find it with that nose
Funny how the simplest things can make you relive a different time and place somehow. I opened this, and immediately could see my great-granddad (also from Kentucky) getting his old Bloodhound to start baying by going, “Where’s that rat, Bud!? Better get that rat, Bud!” And acting like there was something under the couch. My great-grandmother would get so mad and he’d just egg that hound on more by saying, “I know it, baby, tell ‘em! I find all the comments calling this abuse and saying he needs to go to the vet and get on a diet funny. For all they know the dog could be in the process of getting all the help it needs. People are so quick to cast judgement.
