Ah yes, Thalassophobia simulator. Bought this game around Christmas because it was on sale, and boy was I in for a treat. On one hand the biology major in me adores the alien ecosystem, the various tidbits of xeno-science in game, and of course - crafting and base building. On the other hand - I can’t swim well, and know full well that a good 70% of the fauna wants to eat me, digest me, and excrete me as sea fertilizer for the nearest underwater flora whilst using me freshly made submarine as a chew toy. Totally worth the 35 hour experience though, even with the deep sea jumpscares.
I actually had less of an issue with Below Zero (I suffer from thalassophobia) and am playing it at the moment without big of an issue. Subnautica on the other hand...I don't know what is is, but I could never get myself to finish that game.
Once again you're reacting to one of my favorite games! Subnautica is unique in how the atmosphere is very calming yet creepy at the same time. I wish I could go back and explore the world for the first time again
I've seen Mark and Jack play this over the years(mostly just out of context clips so I don't spoil myself), then I got the game myself. And it's probably one of the scariest games I've ever played. Not in the horror game jumpscare kind of way. But it preys on the idea of fear of the unknown. Where you're just drifting through the sea, minding your own business, and you hear a strange screech or growl in the distance. But by then it's already too late. Whatever you just heard has most likely already seen you.
If you somehow manage to scan a reaper leviathan, it tells you that it works in echolocation and if you can hear it, it knows your exact location is is most likely already coming for you.
Little bit of context, the first Cinematic Trailer where the guy is narrating about it being months since seeing sunlight. In that one the first ship you see crash is the Degasi which went missing awhile before the game starts. The second ship at the end is the Aurora which is the ship the player was on. At the start of Subnautica, the planet is uninhabited. Below Zero which as they said takes place after the first, Alterra the big 'Company' of the universe has started researching the planet. Both are rather fun games the first the story is more bread crumb driven exploring and finding out what happened, while the second has a stronger narrative guiding you along.
Best survival game ever, deep story (literally), not only some natural jumpscares but also the feeling of terror, except apparently those werent meant to be scary, they just turned out to be scary
These games were probably some of my absolute favorite gaming experiences over the last 5-10 years. The original Subnautica is so amazing with a perfect atmosphere, sound design, visual aesthetic and beauty, and a great balance of excitement and fear to explore the dark unknown depths. It has a surprisingly deep (pun semi-intended) story with a bit of a critique on modern society, but you can completely ignore all that and just explore and build cool bases if that’s what you’d prefer! Below Zero is still a good game but it loses some of what made the original special. The story is a much larger part of the game, land exploration is a little clunky, and it’s generally small little less scary or nerve racking, but it’s still thoroughly enjoyable. Things in the game are definitely dangerous, but you’ll probably die way more to a lack of oxygen then being a tasty treat. Disclaimer: If you don’t enjoy grinding resources and crafting in a game, that’s a significant chunk of Subnautica. you can skirt a little bit of it if you build small, efficient bases, but even then you’re still going to be hunting down copper for what feels like half the game haha.
Haha, thanks for the disclaimer. Seems like it might be a good game to stream though because we can chat with community while we build and search for copper 🙂😀
This game does such a fantastic job of building a sense of danger. I've seen grown men playing this game get startled and cry out in alarm when their submarine collides with a tiny fish, because they're so on edge and jumpy that basically anything is a jumpscare. And that awful feeling you get when the ocean floor just *drops* away from you into nothingness, or when you've been descending for what feels like an hour and there's literally nothing in sight but empty ocean, those are the moments that really make this game. Also every now and then a *giant friggin sea monster* will come along to make sure you remember why you were terrified.
Ah, this is one of my favorite games of all time. The music, the story, the environment, and the replay factor... I know a lot of people say this and it's totally not original, but I wish I could experience it for the very first time again.
That one trailer with the guy narrating, the first ship is a different one. The person talking was from a ship that crashed long before the ship at the end crashed which is where our character is from. By the time we crashed the crew of that ship are long dead and gone.
Subnautica is one of my favorite games of all time. You build so you can expand the area you can explore and you explore so you can build more and get new resources so you can make new things so you can keep exploring more places. The plot is kinda wild but it isn't overwhelming. Ships keep crashing on this planet and one of your objectives it to figure out why and how to escape the planet. It's so beautifully simple
They say space is the final frontier. I feel like that right belongs to the ocean. There's so much down there yet to be explored, imagine the crazy alien life to be found in the seas on other worlds.
Finally! Subnautica was one of my favourite survival games in 2018, and I followed it closely since 2014. It was a genuinely fun game to watch other's play. And kinda creepy yet satisfying to play on your own.
Trailer 2 had 2 crashes, one is a crash that happened several years before the game, the guy narrating was on that ship, when the player crashes on the planet (crash 2) they’re gone and you find the remnants of their bases
I'm glad you guys took a moment to look at Subnautica after all the dark stuff you two have been covering recently. It's a truly atmospheric game that either is very soothing or terrifying. The second game doesn't compare to the first in my opinion mostly because the scariest monster is now known as "Smoochie" (the one at 13:04 ) in my house. I tend to talk while I play games and so my family gets to hear me chanting, "Go away Smoochie. No one likes your slobber kisses."
Fun fact bellow zero was originally a dlc for subnautica 1 hence why the developers don’t call subnautica bellow zero subnautica 2 and why the next subnautica game is called subnautica 2 and bellow zero was so big that it wouldn’t be able to be in the game without causing devices to have a aneurism so instead they made it a separate game

Haha, would definitely not think this game is scary from the trailers. Only fitting that the light hearted stuff we finally check out ends up being scarier than the rest 😂
subnautica is a great game i must say. and i dont say that a lot. if you guys play games you have to play this. its way more scary than appears trust me. its not horror but terror. the game does a great job to scare the crap out of you. also there is a los of sicological terror. like big monsters, creepy sounds, darkness and more that screws with you mind while playin. the first game in particular its a master piece. you will feel scary, happy, sad and all the other things while you play. its an open world, crafting game. where you must gather difrent minerals and plants to make stuff and also food and drink. you scan everything to gather information about the use of whatever you scanning or even info on the fauna and how to dodge it. the game isnt build to kill. i fact there are no weapons beside the knife .you can still kill stuff , and sometimes you must, to feed yourself but other than that the game dosnt reward you ( with stuff) for killing. you chose how to play your game. you can kill the predators or find ways around them. and sometimes when you see someting ... you run or you run before you see it ;)
We like the thriller survival aspect of it. Not normally a game we would play but it’s been getting a lot of great reviews like this from the community 😀🥳

Subnautica is one of my favorite games of all time. Got into one of the early betas and I've been playing it since 2015. Still haven't technically finished either game. LoL :)
so, in the cinematic trailer, you get to see what happens to the degasei (please help my spelling lol). Bart thought he was the only survivor that made it (margarite survived). The Aurora was trying to find the crew that landed in 4546B but the alien gun G.U.N shot down the aurora. and you (the player) were the only one that survived. the Planet was under quarantine because of this alien bacteria called the Kharra. it is highly infectious, and you get it later in the game. in the end of the cinematic trailer, was The Aurora after it was shot down by the G.U.N. hope this helps. also sorry for my spelling!
As someone who's not a great swimmer and firmly believes that if I was meant to be in the water I'd have fins and gills as part of my natural biology lol...these games are AMAZING. Excellent classic survival mechanics where you have to manage your food/water and air supply when diving around this DISGUSTINGLY beautiful alien ocean planet, and such an incredible sense of atmosphere and immersion. There are times when you're just swimming around gathering food and cataloguing wildlife when it feels so peaceful and serene, and there are other times when it legit feels like a horror game and the tension/desperation feels like you're about to explode. I'm also an ENORMOUS fan of games with a good deal of base-building available, and have spent a frankly embarrassing number of hours between these two games just gathering materials and constructing the underwater facilities of my dreams. I inevitably end up with a good sized base in every major zone because they're all just so awesome in their own ways and I love figuring out how to build around the environments and creating immersive installations to monitor the world around me and scan for valuable resources. The story of these games isn't a slouch either. Both of them are very "explore and discover" rather than quest-based breadcrumbing you through a linear line, though Below Zero definitely pushes the narrative a bit more aggressively than the first one. Both of them are games I just keep coming back to though. It's easy to get lost in this world. When you're brand new, the thrill of discovery is so exciting and terrifying at times...and when you know these zones really well, it's like going home. :) Love, love, LOVE these games. :D
Quality review 😀 We hadn’t expected much from this game but it seems like the trailers do not do it justice and we will have to give it a shot some time 🤩
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames It's a VERY different overall tone than a lot of the other sorts of things that have been seen on the channel. It's also not as much of a pure action/adventure sort of game as most of the things I'll hop on here and rave about. Subnautica is all about the exploration and discovery, and the world you can just get lost in. Even though the graphics aren't the most photo-realistic of all games, it still feels real enough to make you get nervous when you find yourself in the wrong places and flat-out PANIC when everything goes awry lol.
No it's different crashes the first crash is the aurora, the second clip shows a a crash of explorers (the aurora is a commercial ship) , so there were survivors that came before the aurora accident
I finished both games twice and never seen a trailer until now. Honestly trailers don’t do this game justice. The first game is so unique and special. A must-play.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Sure. And It's different too. It's the fear of deep sea which we all have a little I think. So It's more natural. I hate to admit I had a lot of fun watching people with thalassophobia do a lets play on this game :D
on the crash the second crash scene in trailer thats the degasi ship the ship from the crew that guy in trailer was talking and the aurora the ship at the end of the trailer landed on the base
You guys should check out the trailers and flicks for the late, great MMO Wildstar! It's full of silly humor and has a wonderfully charming vibe, all set in a vast science-fantasy world! I think you two would enjoy checking out some of its videos! ✨🌌
Ah Subnautica. The one game I want to play but can't due to my paralyzing fear of the ocean. Well I heard that Planet Crafter is like Subnutica but on Mars so maybe that will work.
If you want to learn more about the planet subnautica takes place on, planet 4546B, than I recommend reacting to the channel Curious Archive’s videos on both of the games. He has 2 parts for each game going over the biomes and creatures on the planet.
You should check out The Biology of Subnautica by the Curious Archive. It explores the biomes and studies the fauna of the both the game like a documentary.
As cool as they are, the trailers really can't do the feeling justice that you get when playing the game. Its a whole experience. Subnautica is categorized as a survival game but it truly is a one of a kind gem in the gaming space that doesnt really compare to anything and will go down as a classic in gaming history. Its the kind of experience that is impossible to replicate because of its novelty. Not even its own sequel could.
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames For sure. There is an interesting video about horror vs terror and how subnautica is using the latter. Its not a horror game and it doesnt really have jump scares. But the natural human fear of open water combined with short vision range, incredible sound design and hints for the existence of gigantic predators make for a uniquely terrifying experience at times.
I first discovered this game by watching jacksepticeye, specifically his final release let's play (as he did a lot of beta stuff). And that's why he and Markiplier and IGP etc have all their quotes out there and are thanked in the credits of teh game, because the youtube let's plays actually saved the company (according to the devs), because people went out and bought the beta off Steam which gave them the capital to finish it (and then it became even more popular). but jacksepticeye's final release let's play is so wholesome, sometimes I watch through it when I'm depressed. That said, this game is amazing and beautiful. the first is kind of sandboxy, where it starts as just underwater survival and then gets more horrific the deeper you go (they play REALLY well off underwater visibility especially with lack of light as you go deeper and when it gets dark even at the surface you freak out). The main launch trailer, where the guy is talking about how "they should never have gone that deep", that's actually a voice recording you find from ten years prior to you (which is why at the end of that trailer the base is old and then you see the actual ship from the game crashing). So as you explore, it goes from survival to horror to mystery because you learn more and more, and then start to find...weird stuff. The second game caused a bit of divide because the main character (who is really cool) actually talks, and the story is more linear. It's kind of like a different type of game (still survival with some scary stuff, but more point a to b to c) in the same universe. People still liked it but a lot of people feel its not the same lightning in a bottle as the first. Still, highly recommend. Just maybe not at 3 am in the dark like one of the first times I went really deep down XD I had to close the game and walk away for a bit.
I really enjoyed playing this game its really stunning visually and it's the best closest to an ocean I'm willing to go as I'm terrified of the our own one after coming veery close to a great white and very quickly realized how screwed we are if one decided that we are food the speed on them is incredible.
I'd highly suggest playing both games; grab them when they're on sale. With how they play, it's a generally 'here you figure it out' kinda thing. It'll give you the bare basics, and aside from a couple of early game events that could potentially be an issue if ignored long enough (the game won't let you forget about it lol), you're free to play virtually at your own pace. If you want story, you kind of have to dig for that yourself whilest gathering resources and exploring. Well, the second game is more in-your-face in that respect but it makes up for that with added survival complexity and the way they've arranged the environments. I will say the second game isn't as dark (literally) which is a shame because I really missed the 'I can't see a fucking thing in here' feeling when I knew I was pushing my luck in places.
Last year Tomb Raider celebrated 25 years! You're probably familiar with Lara Croft. But I would like to see you react to some or all of the games and the evolution of the franchise throughout the years
At first I got real bored and didn’t play subnautica but then I got on again made good progress and then a switch just flipped and before I know it I’m a farming machine. I just could stop I build all the stuff and eventually had to much stuff. Once I built the ship to get off the planet most people I watched on UA-cam had to go out and grab the items they needed. But I had all the materials ready to go. Build that thing toot sweet
Yeah it doesn’t seem like a game we’d play from trailers but community is very high on it and heard that it has some scary moments along the way as well so we’ve added it to our gaming list. Worth giving it a shot at least we figured 🙂
Even if subnautika looks beautiful its also horror game. I remember how I was swiming in my submarine in total dark and I heard just distant roar and next thing I see is giant leviathan grabing my submarine.
Subnautica and Subnautica Belov Zero are GREAT games (first one is much better), knife I think is only proper weapon in the game. And they are really great music and great felling. Just one note lots of people classify them not only open world survival both of them (but often for fist one for sure they add "open world survival horror") nothing scary or no cheap blood or something like that but creepy atmosphere when researching wreckage's.

In the second trailer those are 2 different ships crashing onto the planet. The degassi and the aurora. The Aurora being the ship, the player is on
Thanks! 😀
I love Subnautica its so beautiful, cant wait for subnautica 3
😎🤟🤩
Subnautica is a cool survival turned horror game
I love this game so much! I was addicted to it for almost 6 months😂 but I have thalassophobia so I’m scared 99% of the time
Same lmao
Very brave to be playing it despite the phobia 😯😀
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames yes very brave👍
I have no idea what it is but your videos are literally so fun to watch :)
Glad you’re enjoying them 🥳🥳😀
As someone who's not a great swimmer and firmly believes that if I was meant to be in the water I'd have fins and gills as part of my natural biology lol...these games are AMAZING.
Love, love, LOVE these games.
You have nearly watch every single one of my favourite games. All is missing is Prey and Crysis.
Getting close to 100% 😜🥳😁
Another great video you guys are nailing all of these ❤🤟
The leviathans in this game are incredible sounding and looking
😎🤟🤩
No mans sky next please it's like this but with multiple planets in and infinte universe
We have that game on our request list 😇
Great games. Glad you're getting to them. Subnautica is gorgeous. They are underwater survival horror mystery.
Quite a nice mix there 😀
This game is great as well, story and survival are just too much fun. Both are a must play for sure; it'll be a whole new experience.
A new type of game for us for sure 🙂😀
The Ocean is full of Mysteries
True 🤩
YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!! i love subnutica so much you made my day
Yay! Happy to hear it 🥳🥳
Oooh, you reacting to subnautica stuff too? Nice. Looking forward to it.
😎🤟
Yo you guys reacted to subnautica! This game is amazingly beautiful! And terrifying
Nice combo there 😀
No it's different crashes the first crash is the aurora, the second clip shows a a crash of explorers (the aurora is a commercial ship) , so there were survivors that came before the aurora accident
Thanks for clearing that up 🙂
The first game is the reason I fear the ocean to this day.
😯😨
I finished both games twice and never seen a trailer until now. Honestly trailers don’t do this game justice. The first game is so unique and special.
A must-play.
Yeah it seems the trailers are a bit misleading as we heard the game can be quite scary 😯
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames Sure. And It's different too. It's the fear of deep sea which we all have a little I think. So It's more natural. I hate to admit I had a lot of fun watching people with thalassophobia do a lets play on this game :D
this is one of my top 10 favorite games it is gorgeous and scary at the same time and i beat it atleast 2 times a year
on the crash the second crash scene in trailer thats the degasi ship the ship from the crew that guy in trailer was talking and the aurora the ship at the end of the trailer landed on the base
Thanks! 🙂
Highly recommend a playthrough of this one.
Seems like we may have to be adding another game to our gaming list. Nice to see you again, Christii! 🥳🥳😀
Gorgeous people right here.
🥰🤗
OMG!!! Thank you!
Our pleasure 🥳🥳
I loved these games, I 100% both of them XD
😎🤟🥳
You guys should check out the trailers and flicks for the late, great MMO Wildstar! It's full of silly humor and has a wonderfully charming vibe, all set in a vast science-fantasy world! I think you two would enjoy checking out some of its videos! ✨🌌
We do have that game in our request list 🙂
Ah Subnautica. The one game I want to play but can't due to my paralyzing fear of the ocean. Well I heard that Planet Crafter is like Subnutica but on Mars so maybe that will work.
Others have said similar. Might be our first survival game to play 🤔
Subnautica is by far the most immersive game ive ever played. Screw horror games this game will scare you in a way that's not been replicated imo.
😯🤩 wouldn’t expect it to be scary but we keep hearing that it is 😀
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames The atmosphere and all the ambient sounds just have that effect :D
Oh man I watched a zany video on below zero and that song at the beginning in the video I watched was a banger it sucks it’s not on Spotify
this is a great game you can play at your own pace...very fun.
Guess that is just something we have to keep in mind. To go at our own pace 🙂
If you want to learn more about the planet subnautica takes place on, planet 4546B, than I recommend reacting to the channel Curious Archive’s videos on both of the games. He has 2 parts for each game going over the biomes and creatures on the planet.
Thanks for the video recommendations 😀
You should check out The Biology of Subnautica by the Curious Archive. It explores the biomes and studies the fauna of the both the game like a documentary.
Coming fourth with another demand. You two gotta check out the new Horus heresy cinematic trailer
Yup. It’s cool Warhammer 40k is dropping some new trailers lately 😀
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames let the galaxy burn
I know you guys play games occasionally, and if it were ever one game for people who don’t regularly play… it would be Subnautica!
Thanks for the recommendation on the game! We’ve added it to our growing gaming list 🙂
Please do reaction on :
- Warhammer Horus Heresy Cinematic trailer
- Armouring a space marine
- Vraks chapter 1
We do plan to check those out. Warhammer 40k keeps dropping new stuff lately 😀
Oh you guys would hate this game so much, but like the rest of us you’d always be drawn back to it.
😂 sign us up for the pain 😇
As cool as they are, the trailers really can't do the feeling justice that you get when playing the game. Its a whole experience. Subnautica is categorized as a survival game but it truly is a one of a kind gem in the gaming space that doesnt really compare to anything and will go down as a classic in gaming history. Its the kind of experience that is impossible to replicate because of its novelty. Not even its own sequel could.
Well said. ☺️🤩 We’ve heard the game can be scary as well which we definitely wouldn’t have guessed from the trailers
Another reaction video, of another incredible and. Fantastic game series. If you haven't done,i would highly recommend trying subnautica.
We haven’t tried it yet 😇
If you are going to play this game....... DO IT VR! Trust me it's a wild ride.
😯😀 We need to get a VR headset first but appreciate the recommendation 😁
THIS GAME IS SO SCARY, your swimming in an abyss and hearing alot of noises and stuff attacking u omg lol, but great game 👌
Look forward to the thrill of it 😀
Oh the little creature that keeps stealing your equipment is cute but super annoying, I once yelled out. "You little bastard" 😆
🤣😂 feels like we will be yelling the same when we try this game 🙂
Thanks for giving us some history on the game and the power that streamers can have in saving a company and a game 😀
This game came make you fear the ocean
That’s what we’ve heard which is not what the trailers show 😯😨
There is a reason way he said we should have gone so deep
I really enjoyed playing this game its really stunning visually and it's the best closest to an ocean I'm willing to go as I'm terrified of the our own one after coming veery close to a great white and very quickly realized how screwed we are if one decided that we are food the speed on them is incredible.
We remember you telling us that before and we don’t blame you for being terrified of the ocean now 😱😨
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames that poor sod getting eaten on camera in Australia recently didn't help😂
this is sucha great game it really is and i recommend it for playing
On our gaming list now 🙂
I'd highly suggest playing both games; grab them when they're on sale.
It’s been added to our gaming list now because of all the great reviews of the game 😀
Last year Tomb Raider celebrated 25 years! You're probably familiar with Lara Croft. But I would like to see you react to some or all of the games and the evolution of the franchise throughout the years
One of Bethany’s favorite franchises ☺️
Warhammer deliver fresh Horus Heresy trailer this morning. I'm not insisting, just showing that there is an option. ;)
Nice! 😀😎🤟😁
Played both and done the first one.
Amazing games. Too bad not everyone can enjoy it as much as I did because of phobias 😅
Yeah we hadn’t realized how many people were afraid of the ocean 😯
😨
Finally a subnautica one!!
😎🤟😀
Yes! I love subnautica!! Could you guys do borderlands 3 trailers, there’s only a few
On our request list 😇
If you both are fancying another survival game
I’d check out THE FOREST trailers
very fun game
Added to our request list 🙂
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames YaaY
You should react to the size of the leviathans in subnautica
If we don’t end up playing the game then we will 🙂
Subnautica and Subnautica Belov Zero are GREAT games (first one is much better), knife I think is only proper weapon in the game.
And they are really great music and great felling. Just one note lots of people classify them not only open world survival both of them (but often for fist one for sure they add "open world survival horror") nothing scary or no cheap blood or something like that but creepy atmosphere when researching wreckage's.
We dig creepy atmosphere 😁😨🙂
Suggestion for a future show: borderlands 3. Tiny Tina is my favorite character.
Do plan to check out more from that franchise 🙂
@@DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames its hilarious! My other favorite character is Mr Torgue lol
I'd love to see you guys react to trailers from Frostpunk!
Have that in our request list 🙂
yes, yes, Yes,
Subnautica is one of my top 5 games!
it's LOng but just some Awesome world building and story telling.
Sub-Zero I can take or leave
😎🤟
If you’re ever looking for a survival/exploration game, Subnautica is the *first* choice.
We don’t normally play those types of games but plan on giving this one a shot at some point 🙂
