Loved this video and learnt so much. Really liked the random nature of the paper and how it is a loose interpretation. I’m definitely going to try this technique. Thank you so much.
I am fortunate enough to live about a 20min train journey from York and yes I agree with you it is full of lots of fantastic buildings perfect for urban sketching! Thank you so much for sharing your techniques with us ❤.
This is such an inspirational video. There are no mistakes, just fun to be had. I just recently followed one of your videos to make a journal and I want to apply this lesson to one or two of my pages. Thank you, the result of your collage looks fabulous.
I loved this video! You inspire me to try these techniques in my art journal. I went to York on a school field trip decades ago as a child and there was so much to see then. I wish I had some reference photos from that time
Oh that turned out great! I was wondering how well the various types of collage papers were going to work out with the watercolor painting. Would they be absorbent or repellent. Definitely a great addition for textures & colors to the finished piece. Thanks for sharing this video! 🥰
I didn’t realize you could put watercolor over the top of gel medium. I would have thought it would repel unless you put watercolor ground over it. I know the color sheets are not traditional watercolor. Do you think regular watercolor paint would also work?
I think it would have been better the other way round, placing the shapes of the paper to match the shapes in the photo. This would acted as a guide for the pen work, making it more 3D. The round paper matched the top of the window.
Of course you can do it either way - personal preference. However I wanted to demonstrate that the papers do not have to guide the pen work (which would be the more expected route). Part of the point of the film is that you might prepare the collage before you go out sketching and choose to work on top of it out in the field. You are highly unlikely to take collage papers and glue with you out and about and wait for it to dry....
Love this technique Liz. 10 minutes?!! I’d still be worrying about where the horizon line was. 😂
it is far more forgiving than you think!
I always enjoy your videos, Liz, and I learn so much. I love the way you chat while you work, it's fun and you're great company! Thank you ❤
Thank you! I can chat while I’m painting, but not while I’m writing!
Im saving chocolate wrappers from now on!!😄
Any excuse!!
Excellent tutorial! Love the neutral colors with the pops of bright orange. 😍
Thanks so much 😊

Glad it was helpful! I like the extra dimension it brings to a simple sketch

you are so lucky! it’s a beautiful city!
Thank you. I will have to go look and find this view next time I'm in York.
you are spoilt for choice in York!
Love this Liz! Thanks for a great tutorial and fabulous ideas.
You are so welcome!

I remember going as a child with my father and got travel sick on the bus…happy days
Sure do love the look of this!
it adds a great dimension
how fun
it is!
This is genius! I've trying to learn how to line sketch and add watercolour, but not staying within ths lines. Tks x
starting with watercolour and then doing line work is another way of overcoming the urge to paint within the lines

The matte gel medium is pretty good at sticking and sealing.

it did repel slightly so I had to keep persevering. As it was just general colour it didn’t matter. … added texture!

So nice👏❤️
Thanks 🤗
I will try it! How long does the watercolor used to dry on top of the collage?
that’s impossible to answer! How warm is it where you are? is it humid? how much water have you used? what’s the collage made of…..
@@LizChadertonArt😁😁😁 yes, you are right. Silly question 🙈
@@charlottealtmeppen7833 not silly…just impossible!
Love this but all I could think of is, what if I screw up using the pen……oh dear, I have become pencil sketch dependent. Lol
honestly, it’s more forgiving than you think. But use a pencil if you want. There are no rules
@@LizChadertonArt thank you
I wonder what it does mean:
"The sky is always orange in York."
???????
Is this a common english idiom ???
You know I´m no native english speaker.
I forgot:
Greetings from the continent !
🙂
I was being silly…
@@LizChadertonArt so there is no certain meaning ?
None at all - sorry to disappoint ! @@swyntopia
@@LizChadertonArt Thank you for the information.
