    Yianni M. Apostolakos, MD, MPH, is a board-eligible, fellowship-trained orthopedic sports medicine and shoulder surgeon at University Hospitals. He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine where he teaches and mentors medical students, residents and fellows. Dr. Apostolakos specializes in the treatment of acute and chronic conditions of the shoulder, elbow, hip and knee.
    Dr. Apostolakos has published numerous peer-reviewed research papers and book chapters and has presented these findings at the local, regional and national level. He serves on the Editorial Board of the Hospital for Special Surgery Journal and is an active reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine, Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery, and the Journal of Orthopedics, Trauma and Rehabilitation. In addition, Dr. Apostolakos holds active memberships in the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine, American Shoulder and Elbow Society, Arthroscopy Assosciation of North America, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and the International Society of Arthroscopy, Knee Surgery & Orthopaedic Sports Medicine.
    Born and raised in Rochester, New York, Dr. Apostolakos completed his undergraduate education at the University of Connecticut. During his time as a student athlete, UConn's football team participated in four consecutive bowl games, culminating in the Bowl Championship Series Tostitos Fiesta Bowl his senior season. After a series of injuries sustained on the gridiron, Dr. Apostolakos began pursuing a career in medicine. He spent several years participating in laboratory, clinical and biomechanical research in the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Connecticut before matriculating into the University of Connecticut School of Medicine.
    Following medical school, Dr. Apostolakos completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery (HSS) in New York City, the top-ranked orthopedic surgery hospital and residency program in the country. During residency, Dr. Apostolakos’ research interests continued to evolve as he earned several research grants including the Joseph M. Lane, MD, Metabolic Bone Resident Research Grant for the proposal entitled, "Differential Patterns of Muscle Activation in Glenohumeral Osteoarthritis.” In addition to his research endeavors at HSS, Dr. Apostolakos provided physician coverage for several athletic teams including: the Lafayette High School varsity and junior varsity football teams, the FDNY Bravest Football Team, as well as the NCAA Division I Iona College men's and women's basketball teams.
    Following residency, Dr. Apostolakos completed his sports medicine fellowship at the prestigious Steadman Clinic and Steadman Philippon Research Institute in Vail, Colorado. During fellowship he served as a team physician for the U.S. Ski and Snowboarding Team and assisted in the care of high school, collegiate and professional athletes from the NFL, MLB, NBA and NHL.
