    WHOO ASHTON POST!!

  • @dangerousbutterknife7988
    @dangerousbutterknife7988 Рік тому +120

    Something I've also noticed as an interesting trend is that there are many people in communities where fast fashion is the norm have many more people who go without adequate clothing, especially in areas where people are exploited to make said clothes. But in communities where the norm is handmade clothing, many more people have clothing that fits and suits their needs. It's much harder to see in colonized countries nowadays, but pre-colonialism indigenous people were easily able to support each other and clothe themselves properly for their culture and climate. Because the less fortunate were cared for rather than exploited and discarded. People who could not make their own clothes were given clothes, people who could not grow their own food were given food. Humans are such a successful species because we care for each other and help the people who may not be able to survive on their own. Capitalism relies on the (supposedly) weakest people to support the (supposedly) strongest. It is not "survival of the fittest" because the "fittest" contribute nothing of value. Social darwinism is the inverse of natural selection, the most successful people did not get there out of their own merits, but through the merits of those they are able to control. If the poor and oppressed are abandoned to die, the rich and powerful will also die. This is a very simplistic explanation and I could probably go a lot more in depth about this topic but it's very important to me that I tell it in a way that's easy to understand and hopefully sparks curiosity in others. Every aspect of life and history is connected in some way, much like crochet. Humanity thrives on compassion.
    TLDR: Help each other and be kind to those in need. Humanity is built on uplifting everyone, not just a select few.

    This has helped reduce some of the discomfort I feel around buying clothing. I have this feeling of guilt any time I require new things that weren't made ethically. I obviously buy ethically when possible and repurpose anything I can but I don't have the time or money for ethical socks for instance. This has made the last few minutes of my work day much more tolerable, great video.

  • @stephwebb5130

    I was gonna be lazy and not work on my crochet project but the invitation to join made me pick it up lol, thanks.
    I've noticed that with things like crochet and sewing becoming more of a trend, that some of the craft influencers are bringing fast fashion practices into slow fashion which is bothering me. all of these "how much can I crochet in a day" and "i finished this project in x hours" videos I feel are not really understanding the point of learning to make your own clothes and things. I love that more people are learning all these skills and it's more accessible to people, i like that "old skills", as it were, will not be lost to time.
    I just can't stand watching craft influencers complain about how little they've done in so many hours when in fact they've done loads. I get that it's a deeper issue with youtube and income and in a way capitalism as these people need videos and they need different ideas and to keep engagement and all that in order to make their living. I just can't help feeling it encourages more waste and ultimately encourages unhealthy consuming habits.
    interested if anyone else has anything to add/discuss on this topic also

    • @graveyardpansy
      @graveyardpansy  Рік тому +13

      yes!!! such an interesting observation omg. i feel like it’s also very tied up in the capitalist culture of productivity that ppl (even crafters!!) feel the need to have a massive output

    • @idasvenning3892
      @idasvenning3892 Рік тому +1

      I absolutely agree, which is why I don't have the energy to follow that many crafters but rather people with faster hobbies I guess. And crafters that either have a slower output of videos, also make content about other things, or talk openly about starting this project three months ago and that one last year lol.
      I guess the problem ("problem") is that you can be perfectly happy working on a big project for a month or five, but you can't make engaging content out of simply plodding along on row 57 out of 328.

    I have to buy fast fashion due to sensory issues (as well as income issues), but I so rarely throw anything out (also largely due to the sensory issues). I have pants that I bought over 5 years ago that are completely full of holes. They are my inside/sleep pants. My newer "nice" clothes I only wear outside. When I get home, I change. That way my good pants last longer. I hate it, but I don't have a choice.

    • @Birdkiller46
      @Birdkiller46 Рік тому +10

      Same here. Sensory issues also just make it so hard to get clothing in general. I also have clothing that’s generally ragged and such so I don’t care if it gets dirty like when doing outdoor work or such.

    there's no ethical consumption under capitalism, but not all consumption is equal. buying expensive hand made good quality items from independent people who create clothing every once in a while is more ethical than doing shein hauls every month. both are consumption under capitalism. I make the effort to buy expensive clothes occasionally because I want to support people who make things by hand instead of pouring money into large corporations.
    Anyway this video made me decide to invest in some new boots from somewhere that does them in good quality, since last time I payed less and got scammed. they were apparently vintage and real leather but fell apart after a few months. should've known €40 was too good of a deal.

    This is a great video! Makes me feel like I am shifting my own practices in the right direction. I don't really buy a lot of clothing to begin with, but I started mending my pants a couple years ago and it has doubled (maybe even tripled) the life span of most of my pants and now when I am buying clothing I am going into the mindset of trying to determine if something is better quality overall, but also thinking about if it will be conducive to mending when I start to see evidence of wear and tear. And it has been great so far.
    Also I have been crocheting for around 10 years now and I did not know until very recently that crochet cannot be made by machines. I never really have bought any crochet items (because I make whatever I want XD), but it has opened my eyes to how common crochet is in retail clothing stores. And, as you mentioned, it also makes me understand more why people are so weird about paying for the labor of an actually handmade item.

For me fast fashion nowadays overprices the hell out of clothing and its not even worth the price most of the time. The clothing quality itself would not last long after a few washes its as if they are pushing you to buy more bc of the subpar quality. Sizing options are also an issue for me and it has been negative effects ngl hshshs. Recently I've been thinking about the concept of "hand made" clothes? and how the term really should be *self-made*, because while machines can cut fabric in bulk or what have you, the pieces still have to be put through the machine by an exploited, often women and/or POC person. I guess the point is that when you make your wardrobe the use of the word "hand made" just kind of further distances us from the humans that are being exploited in these factory conditions? like, as though there's an us vs them with 'hand made' clothes being good and ethical because we ourselves made them, and everything else is done by disembodied factory which doesn't really facilitate any empathy for the people who have to make the store bought clothes because we don't attribute the fact that they too are made by hand to them ? idk . thoughts.

    It's exhausting to try and navigate any market due to capitalism. Like on one hand I want to buy food, clothes and other resources from ethical companies but those r expensive and I'm a trans autistic person who can't work in the market economy.

    Weirdly animal leather is worse for the environment than plastic based faux leather, because of all the pollutants and chemicals like heavy metals that are used in tanning and dyeing. The worker's health in the leather industry is also barely an afterthought (and then there's the ethics of killing animals for their skin). There are a few plant/mushroom based alternatives but so far they're not widely available yet, which sucks because plastic shouldn't be the only alterative (there is already too much plastic on this planet).

      i still exclusively buy animal based leather (second handed) because it’s breathable and far FAR better quality. polyester traps so much heat and sweat, it does nothing.
      i’d love to see plant based leather or something else!
