Here's the answers:
10:18 "because in Japanese, 'shi' (4) also means death"
11:04 "shichi (7) kind of sounds like 'shi' (4) ... because of that, they kept 'nana' (7)"
11:51 "ku (9) in Japanese can also mean 'pain' ... so only for 9 they kept this one [kyuu]."
@@shoshinsamurai7901 Glad it helped somebody!
thank you!!!
Thanks 🙏
The problem here is, Mandarin is a tonal language with 4 tones, but Japanese is a non tonal language. So, shi can represent a lot more words in Chinese with much less problems because of the different tones being used to distinguish between these meanings. Cantonese has 6 tones which is even less ambiguous. I heard that Min Nan has 7 tones. Most languages in South East Asia are much more advanced because of the use of tones and hence fewer consonants and vowels are needed to form different concepts.
You should certainly skip the first 6 minutes
I've noticed this difference before, but when I googled it I couldn't find a good explanation.
This is the first video in come across that does a good job of explaining it thanks for taking the time to put it together
Thomas-san, Hajimemashite. I'm glad that this video answered the question you had. Until I started teaching and my students asked me this question, I had never even thought about it, you know. My students always help me grow as a teacher.
yes, I agree with you
“Shi also means death” *she then smiles*
Something’s wrong, I can feel it.
told you it means death in chinese too but in Japanese too so try not to use that if you can say 4 in alternate Japanese.
@@josephfrye7342 Bro I know- I was joking about the fact she smiled after that-
@@twihhn i knew that too well including about the fact.
😂😂
@@twihhn she is in front of camera in the video will she be angry 😂 with their audience, she'll be smiling, right
My mom told me what am I doing...I said I'm studying Japanese and she replied really? Who is your teacher? ...I said it's Yuko sensei....I easily learning Japanese because of you sensei...arigatoo!
Yuko Sensei you are very clever! This is the most clear english that I've ever heard from a Japanese people thanks for the explanation!
Shinigami-san, arigatoo gozaimasu. I'm glad the explanation was helpful for you. :)
Question answered after 7:05
Macboer-san, Thank you for helping the viewers. :)
Doing gods work 🙏
Thank you.....♥️
Macboer thank you very much
ありがと (i hopefully spelled that right)
aah, that's why when you count things it's, hitotsu, futatsu, mitsu and so on. same as counting people, hitori, futari... now I know 😊 I didn't know before where it came from so I had a hard time understanding the difference. arigato sensei 😍😍 your videos are really helpful.
Zelle-san, you are right. Hitotsu, futatsu ... & hitori, futari ... uses the traditional Japanese numbers in the counters. I'm glad that the lesson cleared some confusions that you had. (^^)
Basically....don't mention death and pain while counting, it brings bad luck, instead use the other forms :') Great lesson ! Thanks a lot from Romania !
Hi! My grandma was a pacific islander, and japanese was her second language. She always counted using the column on the right. I didn’t know there was a difference until I went to college. This is really cool. Thank you!
Lisa-san, Hajimemashite. Your comment reminded me that, when I visited Guam and Saipan many years ago, I was so surprised to see many people spoke Japanese. :) I'm glad you found the lesson informative. Thank you for your comment.
My grandma is a Pacific Islander too!😃

Best explanation I’ve seen/heard anywhere online. I used to get confused as to which to use. Thus video has made feel better.
This was a great history lesson. I like how you cover obscure things that natives don't think about but second language learners are confused about.

Arigato for explaining that which I never knew. I am teaching my kids "yon, Nana, and kyuu" as I learned it in college. I am glad I am not teaching it wrong! Whew! Yokata!

Short, spicy and very helpful. Thank you :)
ありがとうございます。
I recently started learning the number in Japanese and hit a roadblock when I noticed there were two different ways to say and write some of them. I got confused as to which is the more correct one to use, didn’t know you can use either variation. Thank you so much for explaining it!
Thank You for this lesson. Stay safe.
Good explaination
Very informative video thanks
先生ありがとうございます。
Very very interesting
戸もうありがとうございます! (Hopefully that was correct) I have been trying to learn very basic japanese on my own the last couple of weeks using tofugu and Duolingo but nothing beats being taught by a native speaker. You have acquired another sub :)
THANK YOU! Explain to perfection
Extremely useful. ありがとうございます
Thank you so very very much for this video!
I am so grateful to you.
I am currently doing Aikido lessons and they often count the steps in Japanese and all moves are given in Japanese as well.
But it was the difference with the 4, 7 and 9 that got me confused as both sensei's would mention those numbers differently and I would get confused and mess up my steps!
So I have decided to go with Yo, nana, Kyuu... So far, so good!
Thank you again. ❤️🙏
This was very informative. ありがとうございました。
Nice video and very easy to understand it! Thanks a lot Yuko Sensei
Evangelos-san, I'm glad it was helpful and easy to understand for you. Thank you for the comment!
Really well ewplained! I was a bit confused when learning, I didn't know with one use but you made it really clear. Thanks
Thomas-san, Doo itashimashite. (You are welcome) I'm glad the lesson was helpful.
Thanks!!
ありがとうございます for helping me understand!
どういたしまして。(^^) I'm glad it was helpful for you!
That is very interesting! I was wondering why there were two ways to say these and now it makes perfect sense!
Hai, Yuko Sensi, thank you. I am just new to learning Japanese, and was very confused as to why there was different ways to say the numbers
thank you so much Yuko Sensei for sharing this video it's help me a lot to understand it :) I really like your UA-cam channel .

Love teh etymology. It helps my brain remember the different things.
I'm so glad. I'm just starting to learn Japanese, confused me work saying 4 lol
This is very helpful. Thank you very much for your clear and methodical explanation!
Sisu-san, Doo itashimashite.
I am glad it was helpful for you.
Arigato sensei! I did not know it had to do with the chinese. I am glad I found your video when looking for the answer to this question. じゃあね!
ありがとうございます
You’re doping so good! I learned the numbers before this vid, and when I went on doulingo, I found out they said yon instead of shi, and I got confused if I said it right😅. I found out I say it EXCACLY the same way as you! :o So in general, very helpful, and now I know my way of counting is as correct as other’s! :D
