I have this kit. I am not a rivet counter or a aerospace engineer, so if it is not accurate, I really do not care. What I do care about is how well it looks next to my Spitfires, Hurricanes, and Me 109's. I also like the fact that it was cheap enough to purchase after market decals and still come under what the Airfix kit would cost me.
nice comparison Bret, if i didn't own the airfix i would be more tempted by the trumpeter kit although the bright colours on the airfix decals look "right" to me.
Trumpeter's fuselage is completely fictional both in depth and cross section and they completely misunderstood the moving fairing behind the turret. I'm not convinced about the nose contours either, it seems to taper too much and be too rounded. Airfix looks like a Defiant....Once again Trumpeter produces a nicely molded kit that's completely let down by its lack of accurate shape and details. I know not everyone is a slave to shape accuracy like me, but I'd puke if I had to put the trumpy kit on display on my shelves.
Airfix, being an English manufacturer, had ready access to the only surviving real Defiant at the IWM, so I'd be more inclined to think that theirs is more accurate in outline AND detailing. Trumpeter is a Chinese company and constantly uses drawings, often of Dubious quality to base their kits on. And consequently they get caught out on the errors they transmit into plastic as a result. (viz their Hornet (DeHavilland Hornet that is) and Spiteful/Seafang kits.) Sometimes their sources are pretty good, and the kit is also OK.....and sometimes you get horrors.
Great comparison video Bret. To be honest there is something better in each of the kits and is too close to call a winner for me. I do think the detailing is better on the Trumpeter, but the decals are far better on the Airfix. I would personally call it a draw and just allow people to decide which is better for them. Both are great looking kits and plenty of fun to be had building them. Have fun with your builds, Joe
Thanks for that Bret. I was looking at the Airfix one but thanks to your comparison I think the Trumpeter one with aftermarket decals will be my choice.
Great video, Brett, it seems to be swings and roundabouts with the two, I think all Airfix decals are cartograph it will say on the box somewhere, I like Airfix but I also like trumpeter, the rivet thing bothers me, that's a pretty big thing to miss by Airfix which is inexcusable, but then arggghhhh in other words I don't know!!
Hobby boss/Trumpeter may have rivet and lighter panel lines but the dimensions and outline are significant better a more accurate model is possible with less effort from the Airfix kit which is also cheaper in Australia.
trumpeter panel lines are too light they almost disappear under primer and paint , airfix may look heavy on bare plastic but they are just right in my opinion .

MAF MAF I have to agree with you. Thanks for watching
Thanks for doing the comparison Bret good idea, think I'll be adding the Trumpeter one to my ever increasing wish list :)
nice to see the differences..!

Thanks for the feedback, I'm not a Defiant expert so It's good to know what the issues are before I decide to build one!

...only if you do not care to build a totally inaccurate model.
Great video 😀

Airfix decals are the better colour. The Trumpeter ones look like a lime green outer ring.
Thanks, I thought the Airfix were more accurate. Thanks for watching
Nice job. Very interesting

I like both aircraft. But airfix wins with there decals. Both r nice tho. Glad to see em in 1 \ 48 ! Good presintataion bud
But I've never heard of an F1 type
great review the trumpeter decal colours are way off .... cartograph produces the airfix decals
ps airfix studied a real plane trumpeter didn't make the trip to see one
It's called an F1 because Trumpeter don't understand RAF designations.

Gavin Blackburn that's a good point, thanks for bringing that up, I'll need to check that out. Thanks for watching.
It's an entertaining video and a good concept to compare two rival kits-well done .
Hobby boss, trumpeter all same factory! Kinda like tamiyagawa 😆
Jman👀
Airfix decals are Cartograf printed.
