I think that Roc was intended to be a "safety net" blade of sorts. His low damage combined with his critical rate, his aggro reduction skill, and his low hp skills makes him a good blade to switch to when Rex is being targeted, while the 30 second damage boost serves to help you out before the battle escalates. Combined with how early you get him in the game, he's also a good beginner blade that serves to encourage the player to practice important combat elements, such as aggro management and driver combos.
Roc is a cool blade. He’s a massive bird, uses dual scythes, and his former driver is a mercenary leader! Roc is amazing. Always has been, always will be!
I kinda like Roc, he has a cool design, unique weapon type, and has a bit of charm. Too bad he sucks in battle and loses all relevancy in the story, always has, always will.
This but...kinda unironically? Muscle Uppercut is the first truly good Launch art you'll have access to. The other pre-Pandoria Launch arts are on Rex's Greataxe, which has decent Arts but terrible animation speed, and Nia's Knuckle Claw, which suffers from, well, being a physical weapon on Nia. Vandham gives the party a setup which can actually execute Driver Combos with some level of optimization, at least for a short while. (This setup is Rex/Nia/Vandham with Corvin on Rex. Rex will be fine tanking because Corvin, and he'll actually get the Topple off unlike Tora.)
Watching this, it just occurred to me that "Immovable Heir Carlos" is intended to be the descendant of Immovable Gonzalez from the first Xenoblade. I love it

Honestly, Roc may have been more suited to Vandham than Rex. See, you say that the level 4 is contradictory to the smash art, but on Vandham it synergies better because he has a launch art instead, and you can just cancel muscle uppercut into Crimson Storm, and with launch duration extension, could lead the way for someone else to smash. The fact that Vandham has great stats (especially in strength) for a driver compared to the others, I’d say that Roc would be better on Vandham had Vandham been a permanent party member, it’s actually more fun with Roc on Vandham anyhow. Now if only someone could make mod for permanent Vandham...

A note about Roc's level 4 special: when used as the 3rd special in a blade conbo, the launch freezes and allows him to do big time damage on stuff like Volcanic Storm, AND still get the smash off if timed correctly. Edit: I say Volcanic Storm specifically so you can build Volcano and then use it as a finisher. This means just with story blade (Pyra, Wulfric, and Roc) you can Break/Stone, Topple/Volcano, and Smash/Volcanic Storm.
Maybe Roc's level IV has launch damage up because Vandham has a launch art? But the smash art is better for obvious long term reasons and QT pi has launch and the best break art in one extremely overpowered package. I don't know, that's just a weird effect.

I like Roc's design and character. Not much to say...If I were to upgrade him, I would have Storm and Stress not have the 30 second time limit. I would also increase his auto-attack damage by 100 from the listed value in the video.
I used all story blades against Aion. Rex had Mythra, Nia, and Roc Tora had Poppi a + QT Zeke used Pandoria Roc works surprisingly well with Mythra and Nia. You can go ham with Mythra, once you start taking damage, switch to Roc, since he has an Art that is stronger when Rex has low HP. Once you use his Evasion Art to dodge an Enemy Art, switch to Nia and heal back all the damage you take.
It's your subconscious mind debating with your inherriant OCD if you want to spend hours grinding S+ trust on all Rare blades because I'd look oh so good when you open your blade page.

Roc isn't programmed as a 1 for Male Blade, 2 for Female Blade, or 3 for Animal Blade. He, and only he, is programmed as 4. As Rex's only Smash art (without DLC), they knew he forever would be the 4th slot. "I am Roc, always have been, always will be, in your 4th slot." Edit: I just realized you said "Him or 4".
technically poppibuster i believe also shares the 4 designation, but i assume thats because poppibuster is both a male and female robot due to poppi mk.II
You know, looking through this comment section 9 months later, I'm suprised I haven't seen a single "lemme smash" joke considering that's pretty much all the bird man's good at.
I tend to use a set up of Mythra, Zenobia, and Roc on Rex. At least that way I have most of the Driver Combo on Rex and I can just wait for someone else to break an enemy. In short, Roc literally sits there doing nothing unless I need to Smash something.

For a blade that doesn't have very high damage output, there sure is quite a few ways to set him up. TFW you matter so little that it doesn't matter what you help with.
For a future video can you please do a video on the best driver combo party setups at different points in the game such as when the full break, topple, launch, smash combo is first possible in the game. A mid point team and then an endgame team outlining which drivers and blades are used as well as accessories, aux cores, chips, pouch items and all. I have only ever found one team setup that will work to do the full combo but I am curious what the best setups are and how fast and often you can possibly do the combo. Thank you.
But what if you go to New Game Plus and level grind Vandahm? I mean sure, most of the Titans are off limits to him, but you can use him in Challenge Mode.
Roc could have been truly good with Vandham in chapter 3 at quick-killing ejected bosses. Unfortunately, the bosses in chapter 3 are all drivers, which make them very difficult to be ejected.
Help Enel. My current tem is: -Tora with qtpi; -Zeke with dagas for the topple and kaizer zone; - Rex with roc for the smash. I wanna switch roc with another smasher. The big bird can't even catch a break with the devs because they don't assign him a gender or species other than 4.

nah kaizer zone only works if dagas is active. Better to use corvin on rex.
