The pin doesn't activate the fuse on a grenade, it's the spring-loaded "spoon" that pops off when the grenade is thrown. The pin keeps the "spoon" in place, and the grenade from exploding.
Well, it's a violet M18 colored smoke grenade, and by itself is not a lethal device. If you are quick you might be able to toss it outside before it ruins the interior of your house. Breaking a window to get it outside is preferable, as opposed to repainting the walls, replacing the carpet, and refurnishing the affected areas. It'd also be wise if you chucked it as far away from the house as possible, because the drifting cloud could also stain the exterior of the building a nice purple color. Word of caution, M18 smoke grenades get quite hot and can even start fires in dry conditions. Using improvised hand protection is recommended. Also, the smoke dispensed is mildly toxic and shouldn't be inhaled directly. While the pin on an M18 smoke grenade isn't as difficult to pull as an M67 fragmentation grenade, it still requires some effort. I'd have no concern about a house cat pulling the pin off with its teeth. This has clearly been modified. Also, from past experience, I remember that the spring-loaded lever called the "spoon" is supposed to "flip" away from the grenade and not just detach. I'd be fairly certain from seeing this that it was inert, but I'd still vigorously fling it out the window. I'd rather be safe than sorry, and that smoke that comes out is nasty. The colored burning die can permanently stain whatever it wafts into and smells like pure cancer. Fun fact, you cant really pull the pin with your teeth. I learned this when i went with a family member in the military to her base so she could run a quick errand. Ended up talking to a seargent with a smoke grenade and he handed me it and asked if i thought i could pull it with my teeth. Tried it, failed, and watched him have a laugh. And then he told me some funny stories of people breaking teeth trying to do it after they had been specifically told they couldnt, among other fun stories. Thank you very much for pointing this out. That also isn't a real smoke. The bottom would be flat with a small square piece of heavy duty tape that pops open once the grenade ignites.
Naah, this is a practise grenade. Their pins have been pulled so often they tend to be very loose. A real one, cat would be able to pull at the pin all day, would never get it out. As for obvious reasons you don't want the securing pins of real hand grenades coming out accidentally.
Here's the best part; that grenade is inert. With how long that large part was out (which I currently don't know the name of, but it is the part that stops most grenades from detonating with the pin out until released), that grenade would've started sending out smoke. So good news, completely fine. Bad news, you can't have an impromptu rave party in your living room thanks to your cat activating the violet smoke grenade.
