Spirit Island is a tough co-op but very popular. With your desired win rate of 20% and love of Robinson Crusoe I think you will like it a lot.

I agree. Ali clearly doesn't shy away from complex games, and Spirit Island is one of the best co-ops around for my money.

I think I'll finally put that on the top of my list. You've convinced me.

There's something so relaxing I find about sleeving cards. Plus my favorite added bonus of cards becoming a million times easier to shuffle. As for any games being "dated"... there's so many popular reviewers already taking on the new games, where the older games only get mentioned briefly in people's top 10 lists and such. Old games deserve a new audience. You do you.

Okay, I can't just stop there. Do you already have Scythe in your collection? Stonemaier games are a personal obsession of mine. So, if you like Scythe or Wingspan it's worth checking out Tapestry.

We are in a renaissance of board gaming! I think its due to access to data and testing. A lot of modern board games spend YEARS in design and playtesting. Tools like Tabletop Simulator allow designers to expose their games to players/critics, receive feedback, and fine-tune the game before it is put on the store shelf. As a result, games tend to be much more balanced, themed, and, most importantly, FUN!

I think you would love Near and Far. For two people perfect (and little bit tweaked rules, to get the best from the game).

I have Near and Far too! What are the tweaks you give to the rules?

Check out Scythe if you haven't already. It's a solid engine-builder/area control with a little bit of combat mixed in. Easy enough for someone who's interested to pick up over the course of an evening with enough potential complexity to keep hobbyists engaged. Definitely the game I get to the table the most often.

I agree Chess and Magic the Gathering are both lifestyle games. Where the people who love the games often love those games most. Magic is fantastic but it can be expensive. You can buy Magic Dual decks and try it that way.

I am curious, have u played Ghost Stories or Chaos in the Old World? I am a fan of both games. I think it would be a new experience that you may enjoy. I infer this from your review of Dune.

It makes me so happy to hear that you'll be doing both book and board game content! I've been doing the same for over 4 years and while it has absolutely NOT been a recipe for UA-cam success, it has given me a fun outlet to talk about my favourite hobbies.
Also, if your top 10 games are "dated", then mine are downright ancient! In late 2018/early 2019 I made a series of videos about my top 60 board games and included a bunch of stats at the end of the last one (including when the games were published), so I just now looked that up again. None of my top 60 games were published before 2003 or after 2017, and the vast majority were published between 2010 and 2017.

You have a very entertaining channel.
I think I may try some newer games but I don't think there's a good reason to put those 'older' ones to the side.

Judging women coming into the hobby as "someone's girlfriend" instead of welcoming everyone equally and just not judging altogether...that was definitely me when I started out. It was hard to get rid of the mindset, too, since I'm the one introducing games in my circle and boys definitely gravitate more to it than girls (which was really because I had more male friends than women, not because they weren't equally interested). Did I get my surprise when I started entering other playgroups. Did I get embarrassed when I talked down on them like I'm any smarter at this. Those were pretty good learning experiences. I suppose equal opportunity comes from making the space comfortable and safe, and definitely not by being condescending to anyone.
    Also, that kanagawa/starry night/one piece picture...so cool.

I highly recommend witchstone it’s very fun. Already logged about 7 plays in only a few months. It’s also a 2021 release so get it while you can before it disappears 😀. I have over 230 games collected since 2019 so I’m always looking for the hotness games. I think most top ten lists are dated since they always leave out good games the year they are talking about. It’s more about preference I think. I’ve also logged over 730 game plays on bga since November so I average about 1-2 physical games a day and 6 bga games a day. Happy gaming. Btw the only interest I have in reading is the warhammer 40,000 universe but I never see what I want at the store.

That is very impressive! I haven't heard of Witchstone but I will check it out.
I have wanted to try some Warhammer books but I hear that they are very hit or miss.

My first video from you was the "Top 10 Board Games" and I'm glad I found your channel! Love fantasy books as well as board games!
Have you tried any of the (non-M:tG) card games out there? They usually aren't as deep in complexity or strategy as some of the board games you enjoy, but I feel like you'd enjoy some of them for what they are. My first two suggestions are Fluxx (Monty Python Fluxx, Cthulhu Fluxx, Zombie Fluxx are just some variants that are fun, but they have too many now!! And you can combine them!). The rules are fairly simple but can get more complex - sort of if the surrealists had invented a card game. Also Gloom (several expansions and alternate versions now), it's a bit 'dark' on the theme, but doesn't take itself too seriously - and it's a story telling game! You have to build a story as you play each new card, working out how the thing described in the card happened with everything else that has. After those Munchkins (again, too many versions, but Munchkin Bites is my favorite, they all sort of poke at D&D and RPG cliches) definitely not as complex as some games but fun, encourages cheating, and nice silly thing. Oh, and Bohnanza!!! That's Uwe's (Agricola game developer) first game! Cute and fun and strategy which mixes cards and social dynamics.
Don't worry about having a dated list is my vote! Too many people get hung up on "I MUST BUY ALL ZEE GAMES!!" and spend more money than I could make in a year on them just to show them all off... and no one has enough time to play all of those much less get good at them! Some older games are just better than some newer games, and also it's a personal preference!! You didn't tell anyone "YOU MUST LIKE THESE GAMES!" just your thoughts and experiences and why they were your top 10, which was awesome!
From a general geek/nerd and board gamer and fantasy book person thank you for making these and the diversity in your channel! :) Do whatever you want with it as long as you're having fun!! :D

I've actually been trying a lot of card games lately. I find it's easier to play a card game when everyone is having a busy day.
That's actually quite a coincidence, I just played Fluxx for the first time a couple days ago. I have the Fantasg Fluxx but think I would like another theme even better.

I've traded/given away most of my Kickstarters that have arrived in the past two years. So no, I don't think new games are better than "dated" 2016 games. Some newer games that have stayed in my collection are Aquatica, Lost Ruins of Arnack, and a book cross over game Red Rising
