@@clairebeane3455 you’re welcome Claire. Its easier than it seems. Once you understand that plant would benefit from the pruning, you will feel more confident.
Someone gave me a jade plant which she had outdoors, cats were sleeping on top of it so it was... it didn’t look well. I’ve always liked the jade plants specifically but usually from a distance as I haven’t had many. And I have never had good luck growing anything... I took it home, kept it outside but under the rooftop overhang... it did well. I replanted it into a half wine barrel and it seemed to like the extra space to grow. It’s turned into a healthy and thriving jade bush which, for my taste, isn’t nearly as attractive as a well pruned jade. Not knowing how to prune one... I ran across your videos. Thank you for sharing... I’ll leave it be for the winter and will prune it in the spring. I’d love to bring it indoors just for its own health but it really doesn’t seem to mind. I’m in Sacramento, California... we get some colder temps here occasionally dipping down to freezing. I’ll cover it with a cotton sheet, I’d heard somewhere not to cover them with the light, see-through plastic tarp I was going to use but I can’t remember the reason. My jade gets the morning sun but that’s it. I moved it once just two feet out from underneath the overhang and could tell within a couple of days it did not like it. After moving it back... 👍 I was surprised such a small move could make such a difference and that it was evident so quickly. It has what I think are flowering blooms on it on the side facing the sun even now in the winter... It’s been a real pleasure seeing it thriving especially after it being used by cats as a bed. It’s grown quickly over the last maybe three years... I wish I still had contact with the woman who gave it to me so I could show it off. ☺️ I subscribed and I look forward to seeing what other videos you have on the jade plants... Thanks again! 🦋
Sorry I missed you comment somehow and couldn’t reply to you sooner. Thank you for connecting and sharing your wonderful experience of saving the jade plant that was being neglected. It gives me joy. I’m so glad that it’s thriving in your care. Yes you can prune it as soon as days are getting longer and warmer so it can push out a lot of new growth. Just you know that my jade plant has never bloomed for me. I’m still waiting. Maybe it’s too cold here or it’s not enough or for some other reason. My biggest and the oldest one is 5 years old. I got it as a small plant from a friend. It has turned into a mini tree now. It is so cold here in Alberta, Canada. We cannot leave them outside during any winter months. I keep mine indoors all year around. But I don’t have curtains on my windows. They get plenty of sun. I have too many plants and some of them are in heavy pots. Like you mentioned that your jade didn’t like sudden change. It’s like with most plants. If you want to change their location like moving them from indirect light to direct sunlight, you need to acclimate them. You can move them a little bit for an hour so a day. Then slowly increase the time before moving them permanently. I agree it would nice to show the lady how that jade is growing and thriving in your care!

Thank you! Jade plants are very rewarding are easy to care for. You can revive any jade plant if it has heathy stem and roots. You can prune it hard and pot it an a fresh soil. You can also save a jade plant which has root rot or fungus if it hasn’t spread in all the stems. You can prune the unhealthy parts of the root and stem and clean your pruner and prune little more. Then you you can let them callous over and propagate those stems to make multiple plants.

I loved the video, amassing job and great explanation. A question that maybe you or someone else in comments could answer. I have a jade plant that is growing great and it’s making a ton of new branches in all the places that bigger leaves that were a little burned were before. It was in a place with a lot of sun when it got burned, but I wanted to know if that is something that happens normally for jade plants if they get burned or if it’s just a coincidence that both things happened at the same time.

@@PlantingwithTej Thanks a lot, that is really helpful to get a better idea. It´s probably a combination of the two factors you mentioned. I had changed it outdoors and to a bigger pot, so it had to deal with a lot of changes and more direct sunlight. And I probably did water it less because it was further away.
I’m sorry I haven’t. I just prune them and give them tree like shape naturally without manipulating branches with wires etc. I don’t put them in bonsai pots either. Maybe in the future. I wish I could help you with that. Thank you.
Thank for connecting! I really appreciate. It likes direct sunlight. Just keep it little away from the window glass. You can start pruning it when it’s around a year old and have multiple branches to prune.
My jade has grown branches from the base twice. I let them get little bigger then I prune them because I like to have a single thick trunk. Normally when we buy a jade plant from a nursery or a store, they have few of the stems planted together to make it look fuller. They can be separated or kept together. If its together for a long time in one pot, you have to take it out and check if you are comfortable doing that. I don’t know how big and old is your jade but you can always prune the branches from the base as well if you like. Please let me know if yuh have any further questions.
@@PlantingwithTej this was all a single cutting that I left in a tiny pot for way too many years. I've watched several of your videos on this topic today, very helpful.
My plants grew tall but stayed skinny, eventually the weight took over and they fell over and dried out and died, I can't figure out how to make the base thicker
Please check out my other Jade videos. You need to start pruning it when it gets multiple branches. Jade plants can be pruned early on when their roots are established and they start putting out new growth. That way they don’t get too heavy at the top. I also move my Jade into bigger pots as they starting to grow. Any stems that grow from main trunk makes it thicker. You can let the branches grow for some time then prune them. Like I showed in the video. Move the plant in full sunlight. They like a lot of sunlight and let the soil dry out between waterings. Plant your Jade in regular potting mix instead of cactus mix and bigger pot. But be careful not to over water it. More soil will take longer to dry. You can stake them too if they start leaning to one side. I keep rotating the plant so they grow evenly.
Thank you Tej!! My jade plant is growing so slowly... Mine is also three years old but is the same size as when I bought it (although it is still healthy). How do I make it grow faster?
Your welcome! I have another video on how to grow them faster with thicker trunks. Plz check it out. If you still have any further questions feel free to leave a comment.
I put mine outside in the summer after a super hard prune and it grows crazy fast. I'm in zone 5 (Chicago). Jade gets morning sun till about 1:30-2pm and then is in shade during the hottest part of the day. It gets rain water when it rains. And I water 1-2 times weekly if it's above 90
Thank you . Yes you can definitely get better if you donut more often and experiment either it. Just keto few things in my mind than always talk about in my videos.
Yes you can definitely separate them and plant them in separate pots If for some reason it’s combined at the base then you can cut it. But you need to keep the cutting in shade for few weeks to form a callus before you plant it in soil. Thicker stem will take longer to heal the cut. Then once it has formed callus you can plant it in a soil. Try not to water too much for few weeks. Once it’s established then you can move it in full sun and water normally by letting it dry between waterings. Feel free to to comment further questions.
@@PlantingwithTej I’m hoping to tackle this on the weekend. If I have to cut a stalk where do I cut it? I would love to show you pictures but don’t know how.
@@roxannarauch8825 you can cut it between the brown rings on stems. It’s called leaf scar. New branches will grow from there. If it’s at the very base where it was underneath the soil then you can slice it flush the the trunk like I showed in the video, if you don’t care about it producing another stem from down there. You can email me at plantingwithtej@gmail.com. I also have instagram under plantingwithTej.
It depends on how big is your plant and how long ago this cutting was started. I wouldn’t recommend pruning a very young Jade plant. Once it has multiple branches, you can start pinching just the top. So it can branch out. Once it’s a year older then you can prune the lower branches or the one you want to get rid of. Plz comment any further questions.
@@PlantingwithTej I bought it last Nov with 5 leaves on it, now it's 6 cm high and only have 8 leaves. If I want to make it as bonsai, what should I do? I don't want it to be too high.
@Annisa Rahmah Its very young plant. I would let it grow little more. Once you feel it’s getting bigger than you would like , start pruning the very top ( the tip ). You can use the pruner and remove it. Then it will produce two branches. Once they start producing more leaves then you remove the top again. If you don’t want it to get taller then buy a small bonsai pot and you can plant in bonsai mix or just regular soil mix with perlite. Prune it every year or whenever you think it’s getting too big. You can also get rid the of the branches in the future to keep it compacted like I showed in the video. In the future I may make a video on how to prune small jade plants. But it’s pretty much the same process.
I use regular potting mix. You can add some perlite in it. Jade plants are not very picky about soil mix, as long as you don’t over water the plant. Please check out my other Jade videos for more information. Thank you.
It could be anything you need ti troubleshoot. Look for any pests like mealy bugs and spider mites. Please check out my other jade videos first if you can. I have useful information on how to care, water, soil etc. If you still have any questions please free to comment. I’ll assist you in the process. You can give more information about the plant as well. Thank you fir connecting.
don't you get big festering scabs when you cut off larger branches? I love to bonsai these and tube jades, but once the cuts get too big the callous just gets bigger and uglier over time.
I don’t find it ugly. It’s barely noticeable. But it’s a personal preference. You can prune the branches before they get bigger. Just prune wisely from the start and keep the ones you know will not prune in the future. That will be the main structure of the tree and keep pruning the little one.
Thank you Janak Kumar. I use miracle grow and mainly use crushed eggshells(washed) as a fertilizer. But I use organic potting soil instead of a succulent mix and I them every year or two. So they get lots of nutrients from the soil as well.
Don’t prune if it’s a really small plant. You can prune it if it has multiple branches and at least a feet tall (10- 12 inches ) There is no point pruning a baby jade plant.
First of all I would like to check if it’s over watered. Take it out of the pot and remove the soil if you see any soft or mushy roots then it has root rot. If there is no root rot you can see I’d it’s been under watered. But in that case leaves usually get very soft and wrinkly then the eventually get dry and fall off. But it takes long time that to happen. If it’s not watering issue , you can very closely check if it has any pests like spider mites, thrips, mealy bugs etc. Make sure to check under the leaves and inside the new growth. Let me know what you find. Then we can go from there.
@@PlantingwithTej Thank you. I will check on it and will let you know. Thank you so much. I water my Jade once a month only because I know, they don't like too much water. My gauge shows the soil is wet. Most likely I over watered it.
Hahaha! I had pruned it further off camera after few weeks and it grew back nicely. But that’s the thing with Jade plants. They respond very well to pruning and push out lots of new growth.
You can pot it in a big pot. Water only when it’s completely dry. Give it a lot of sunlight. Also prune it once a year. Please check out my other video on how to get the trunk thicker.
If you enjoyed this video, you would like my jade series. Check it out.

It´s probably a combination of the two factors you mentioned. I had changed it outdoors and to a bigger pot, so it had to deal with a lot of changes and more direct sunlight. And I probably did water it less because it was further away.
Ok great. I’m glad I was able to help.
Have u ever done a bonsai , could u help mine?
I’m sorry I haven’t. I just prune them and give them tree like shape naturally without manipulating branches with wires etc. I don’t put them in bonsai pots either. Maybe in the future. I wish I could help you with that. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing Godbless...
Your welcome!
Great video. Thank you.
Thank you this is so helpful. How old can I prune it like this? Does this one get direct sun or indirect? Liked and subscribe 🇦🇺
Thank for connecting! I really appreciate. It likes direct sunlight. Just keep it little away from the window glass. You can start pruning it when it’s around a year old and have multiple branches to prune.
Such helpful videos, have you done one on fertilizer, what types do you recommend?
No I haven’t. I don’t fertilize much. I use miracle grow fertilizer one ore twice a year. They don’t need much fertilizer.
What about when it branches out from below the soil? I have one with four stalks and another with 6. Can't wait to implement what I learned from you.
@@Jazz-ji9zu I’m glad I could help. Thank you !
Great video. It looks a bit drastic but your explanation was perfect.
Thank you. I know but it grew back quickly and beautifully.
Very beautiful Jade. How long does it take for it to grow in to this size ?
This 3.5 years old. Plz check out my video on growing it faster with thicker trunk.
@@PlantingwithTej I will. Thanks.
Thank you for info I start liking this plant
That’s perfect. They grow lots of new branches after pruning.
You're Soooo much better at this than I am!
Maybe I can get better from watching your videos. Thanks.
Thank you . Yes you can definitely get better if you donut more often and experiment either it. Just keto few things in my mind than always talk about in my videos.
Beautiful plant dear , see you later
Thank you !
Thank you for sharing your jade plant
You’re welcome!
I have a very large jade plant with 8 stalks averaging 3” in diameter at the base. Is it possible to separate these trunks?
Yes you can definitely separate them and plant them in separate pots If for some reason it’s combined at the base then you can cut it. But you need to keep the cutting in shade for few weeks to form a callus before you plant it in soil. Thicker stem will take longer to heal the cut. Then once it has formed callus you can plant it in a soil. Try not to water too much for few weeks. Once it’s established then you can move it in full sun and water normally by letting it dry between waterings. Feel free to to comment further questions.
@@PlantingwithTej
I’m hoping to tackle this on the weekend.
I just bought jade plant from cutting, when I should start to prune it?
Thanks for sharing🥰

Very nice looking plant
Thank you !
Do you sell jade plant?
Yes I’m planning to sell some of my Jade locally. I’m just pruning them into small trees. Then will sell them. They are talking up a lot of space!
Which soil you use in this plant..??
Plzz tell me
I use regular potting mix. You can add some perlite in it. Jade plants are not very picky about soil mix, as long as you don’t over water the plant. Please check out my other Jade videos for more information. Thank you.
Thanks dear.🙏🏻😌
Thank you so much, wonderful video. What shall we do with all the cuttings???
You’re welcome. You can propagate them. Check out my propagation video.

Does it work on spoon jades
Yes it will work for Jade Gollum as well.
Hi,my jade is weak, end dont grow,i watering every time when she get dry,and she has daily light, what is the problem? Maybe soil?
It could be anything you need ti troubleshoot. Look for any pests like mealy bugs and spider mites. Please check out my other jade videos first if you can. I have useful information on how to care, water, soil etc. If you still have any questions please free to comment. I’ll assist you in the process. You can give more information about the plant as well. Thank you fir connecting.
I’m going to prune my Jade as well. Can I cut big branches and propagate them ?
Yes you definitely can. You just need to let the cut dry for few weeks and make sure it has formed a callus before you put it into the soil.
Do you root the cuttings
Yes I do. Please check my other jade videos.
don't you get big festering scabs when you cut off larger branches?
I love to bonsai these and tube jades, but once the cuts get too big the callous just gets bigger and uglier over time.
I don’t find it ugly. It’s barely noticeable. But it’s a personal preference. You can prune the branches before they get bigger. Just prune wisely from the start and keep the ones you know will not prune in the future. That will be the main structure of the tree and keep pruning the little one.
Hi what if remove all the branches at once, will it still grow ?
Yes it will start pushing out new growth even if you remove all the leaves and top stems.
Looks great!
Thank you !
Aap ji ka jade plant bhut sunder dikh raha hy ji....... Aap is ke kysay dekh bhal karti hy or kon se ਖੜ dalty ho.. Pls. Jarur bataye thanx.....
Thank you Janak Kumar. I use miracle grow and mainly use crushed eggshells(washed) as a fertilizer. But I use organic potting soil instead of a succulent mix and I them every year or two. So they get lots of nutrients from the soil as well.

Can I prune a small jade plant ?
Don’t prune if it’s a really small plant. You can prune it if it has multiple branches and at least a feet tall (10- 12 inches ) There is no point pruning a baby jade plant.
@@PlantingwithTej thank you !
Thank you for this!
You’re welcome Mark!
I have a jade, I noticed this week it drooping and leaves are falling one by one. Any info you can share how to save my Jade?
@@mhenmd1876 ok great. I’m glad you have an idea what’s wrong. Hopefully you can fix it. If need any further help let me know.

How much water you give your jade plant?
I just fill bowl of water and let it soak whatever it needs. I let it soak for about half an hour then I lift the pot and put it away.

When you started pruning, I thought in the end only the pot would remain. Just kidding, but nice videos on jade plant
Hahaha! I had pruned it further off camera after few weeks and it grew back nicely. But that’s the thing with Jade plants. They respond very well to pruning and push out lots of new growth.

How can I make the trunk thick like your jade?
You can pot it in a big pot. Water only when it’s completely dry. Give it a lot of sunlight. Also prune it once a year. Please check out my other video on how to get the trunk thicker.
