And yet, the worst is the metrics in here is just a simple 4/4... but he subverts it to make you believe we are in some weird odd meter. That's how crazy it is. Yeah, he makes even simple stuffs complicate.
@@MarkOhlsson i love this track for that--there's a stuttered sextuplet pattern going on with the kick that is just out of this world, but this simple backbeat on top!
The first pic shows Derek, Tony MacAlpine and Virgil who were together for most the Planet X albums. But this particular album Quantum and this song was played by guitarist Brett Garsed. There were a couple solos by Alan Holdsworth in it but the majority of guitar was Brett. Brett also played on the original Planet X solo album by Derek Shirinian. He formed the band Planet X afterwards.
I see, didn't know, thanks 👍 tbh, I don't know that much about the band itself, I found out the album because a friend sent me it, and it's an amazing album; the only critic for me is that the first 2 pieces are masterpieces (also, as soon as I heard the first note of "desert girl", I went like the DiCaprio meme 🤣 "this Alan Holdsworth for sure"), but the other ones have multiple sections that are very similar to the other pieces (like in "thinking stone", that 7/8 over 4/4 polyrithm and its accents are very similar to the one in "desert girl"), but if I have to consider every piece separately from the others, they are all amazing.
I met Virgil Donati once, I got a pair of drumsticks signed. I'm female, play drums and was probably 12 or 13 at the time. Amazing, me and my dad still love this song and all of their work
I used to listen to A LOT more instrumental music (with a focus on guitarists) in years past, probably peaking at the period of time I first had the pleasure of hearing this beautiful song for the first time; a friend's recommendation for which I will always be dearly grateful for. Point being I had listened to a great number of guitarists and by extension a great number of phenomenal solos. Probably only 10 seconds into hearing the solo for the first time, I thought it was the best I'd ever heard. By the end of it, I was blown away and absolutely convinced. That would've been around 10 or more years ago now, when I was just in my mid teens. I still consider it the best and most beautiful solo I've ever heard. I've never seen anyone else share this opinion, so it was a real joy to read your comment, Moises! It just occurred to me on this listen that another solo I love and hold in a similarly high regard actually has a scarily similar feel to this -- if you see this message, I wondered if you'd like me to share that song with you. I hope you're well, brother!
Yeah there seems to be a lack of credit given to Brett for his guitar playing for Derek on both the original solo album Planet X and the 3rd album Quantum. Tony MacAlpine played guitar for Planet X in it's concerts and it's other albums. Quantum was originally to be played by Alan Holdsworth but he ended up only playing one song, Brett had to step in and play the rest. I would love to see this guys tour with any lineup. Since Brett is in Australia it probably end up being Tony on that tour which is fine too. By the way this rendition of Alien Hip Hop is my favorite, it's a Virgil Donati song and has been played by Frank Gambale also but this one has the best guitar solo.
Can't recall where I found the story, but Allan already recorded all of his parts for Quantum. One night he was so drunk that he ended up deleting a metric ton of it, leaving only the two previously mentioned numbers to be on the final release. I think before the deleting incident happened, Jimmy Johnson was in touch with him and suggested that Allan leave the stuff alone, as he felt it was more than good enough. Oh well... s$%^ lol
Hey, Derek and PX fans: if you do not own Brett Garsed's two solo CDs "Big Sky" and "Dark Matter"..... well... you are 10000% cheating yourselves of great stuff.
Here we see Virgil laughing at us humans trying to follow those metrics.
And yet, the worst is the metrics in here is just a simple 4/4... but he subverts it to make you believe we are in some weird odd meter. That's how crazy it is. Yeah, he makes even simple stuffs complicate.

feels kinda like Vinnie Colaiuta's "I'm Tweaked" 😉
Hahahahaha you're genius
This is Brett Garsed playing the guitar solo. Allan Holdsworth is also on two tracks. An album I miss on Spotify.

one of the best guitar solos i ever heard
I completely agree. That's what true mastery of an instrument sounds like.
Brett Garsed has a way with phrasing that's just breathtaking.

I feel like nobody talks about the bass playing on these records, but HOLY CRAP.
A mental challenge to stay locked in for sure
Agreed. Even I was thinking the same. Amazing bass.
Jimmy Johnson👍👍
bass is sick🔥🔥🔥🤘🤘👍👍👍
There was an epic bass solo on the On the Virg album - the name of the song escapes me (it's been 20-odd years!) but geez it was good.
I've listened to this guitar solo so many times. Holy shit.
Planet X is the band modern djent bands want to be like.
Exactly
For your information Brett Garsed and Allan Holdsworth are the guitar players in "Quantum".
Great Lydian Mode vibe going on for the guitar solo
Wow!!!!!!! 🎉🎉🎉 Amazing
I just found this AMAZING BAND here on UA-cam by going through the great bassist Jimmy Johnson's discography!!!
Best Guitar Solo ever
Close, but actually the title belongs to "Pud Wud" ;)

Just WOW! Pick a key and a time signature already! Love It!
Not that i'm entirely correct, but it feels as if the song is almost entirely in 4/4 but with several groupings and ostinatos.

Yes. Garsed also played on Sherinian solo album Planet X. That man is also a genuine beast!
Do you guys know where we can find the song : POLAND - Planet X ?????
90's Animals As Leaders = 2000 Planet X ?
Why isn't Brett in the photo?
Because Derek and Virgil look ridiculous in it so he was happy to leave Tony in the middle
Why aren’t these on streaming??
A very good question. Hopefully it happens sooner than later
