You miss out on the Carrier trade during the turnaround. It let Guhle switch sides too. Both have made such a huge impact on the defence. It's so much better.
5:38 He's a big reason the hybrid defense system works better. The young defense wasn't quite ready for the NHL level reads it takes to play this. You need veterans to make it work. At the beginning of the season, I said they were two veteran defensemen away from a playoff run. If you count Hutson, whose insane learning seems to be adding a year of ability each month, Habs have that now.

Yes! And It even makes Monty better. Challenging him once again. When Allen was 1st, Monty was challenged to take his spot. The, he became weaker until he was challenged again (now by Dobes)
This! It allowed Guhle-Carrier to take most of the Dzone draws. Hutson-Matheson are the exploitation pair and are pushing the play. Just look at Hutson stats since the trade, He's a top2-3 points among defenders
Part of me wonders if, given how he's playing in New Jersey, would Kovacevic have been that player for us had we traded Barron in the off-season instead?
For those of us who have been following the rebuild stages every step of the way, ie: keeping track of prospects and watching mostly losses and the odd win ...etc, it feels pretty good to see some success. BUT it's not time to plan a parade. Far from it. Yes making the playoffs would be great, but for experience and confidence if anything else. There are still MASSIVE pieces still missing from this complete unit being one of the best teams in the league for a decade like the Penguins and Bruins for example. Making one playoff is a drop in the bucket. Demidov, Reinbacher, Fowler, Mailloux, Roy, Beck...etc, have barely played a dozen games combined. Those are HGE pieces MTL are invested in, a LOT. So let us enjoy the good times like we hurt during the bad ones. But it's a marathon. And it's been a damn fun one to watch TBH!
