Chloe Chua - Allegro-Capriccio from Locatelli's Harmonic Labyrinth

  • Опубліковано 7 кві 2023
  • The lively first movement from the final concerto of the set of twelve violin concertos, "L'arte del violino" by Pietro Locatelli (1695 - 1764 ). This work is notorious for its fiendishly difficult capricci. Locatelli wrote beneath the first movement's capriccio: "Laberinto armonico: 'Facilis aditus; difficilis exitus.'" - "Harmonic Labyrinth: Easy to enter; difficult to escape!"
Performed and recorded live in concert in April 2022 by the Singapore Symphony Orchestra with Singaporean violinist Chloe Chua ‪@ChloeChuaviolinist‬, then aged 15.
Listen to and order the album now from your regular classical music store. For more information, www.pentatonem...
Watch the entire Four Seasons concert on the Singapore Symphony's digital concert hall, SSOLOUNGE (lounge.sso.org.sg).
Rising star violinist Chloe Chua makes her recording debut on Pentatone ‪@Pentatonemusic‬ with the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, presenting Vivaldi’s Four Seasons alongside Locatelli’s Harmonic Labyrinth. With the Four Seasons, Chloe returns to a piece that’s very dear to her, as she won the joint-first prize at the 2018 Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists @MenuhinCompetition with her performance of “Winter”. Despite her young age, Chloe regularly plays to full houses at concerts and enjoys a huge following on social media thanks to her breathtaking technique and charismatic stage personality. This album, recorded as Artist-in-Residence of the Singapore Symphony Orchestra, launches her international recording career.

The blogger angelcarrascosa has posted a knowledgeable review of the album that is very complimentary towards both Chloe and the SSO (Spanish original, machine translated).
"The very brave - and excellent - violinist Chloe Chua
Brave to forget about the historicisms - which are today for almost everyone the only truth - and recording, without fear of being put back and a half, about Vivaldi's Four Seasons plus Il labirinto harmonic, Op. 3/12 by Locatelli, together with the more than notable Singapore Symphony Orchestra, for the Pentatone label (CD published in March of this year). Listening to them is like rediscovering the time golden of I Musici or I Solisti Italiani, or even with the formidable interpretation of The Seasons by Gil Shaham and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra (DG 1994, almost 30 years ago!). Chloe Chua (Singapore, 2007: Yes, 16 years old!) was the winner of the Yehudi Menuhin Youth Competition violinists from Geneva, already in 2018, that is, at 11 years of age.
I'm not sure if it's her also who conducts on this album, or if it is the Orchestra that acts without conductor (with the more or less decisive opinion of the concertmaster, more or less agreed with the other instrumentalists, as is so often the norm in the chamber orchestras). In any case, whoever it is, the management has the Head well in place. Chua possesses a dazzling sound, a mechanism of Attention grabbing and bomb-proof musicality. That it doesn't add anything? new to the usual four or five decades ago? That's right. But for me it's Preferable that, to do things resoundingly well, rather than to bring often bizarre discoveries, if not of an infamous taste. And remember that the 12 Concertos op. 3 "L'arte del violino", published in 1733, by Pietro Locatelli (1695-1764) are of great historical importance in the Development of violin technique. The last of these 12 Concerts requires a virtuosity of the first order, and the teenager that concerns us It has a superlative degree. Splendid sound taking. Looking forward to learning more recordings by Chloe Chua."

The capriccio here -- #23 of Locatelli's set of 24 -- is performed by Oistrakh (on YT) as an encore.
He doesn't perform it with anything like Chloe's fire and exultation though.
The capriccio of the third movement, #24 of the set, is even more spectacular, and Chloe's incredible performance of it - which I have had the pleasure of watching many times - alone is worth the 6SGD SSOLounge entrance fee for the whole concert.

      I am not a violinist.
However, based on what I have read I believe that taken as a whole, Locatelli's 24 caprices are easier than Paganini's, but #23 and #24 are the hardest of the set and are of comparable difficulty.

The whole concerto was aired a few days ago on BR radio (Radio des Bayerischen Rundfunks).
It was sandwiched between recordings by Kissin and du Pre. [EDIT See my reply to this comment for more information about the broadcast that is both surprising and heartwarming!]

    • @jackburgess8579
      @jackburgess8579 Рік тому +6

My German would embarrass a lobotomised gnat, but having listened to the broadcast - it is still available for streaming, in excellent audio quality - I now understand that the sandwich was no accident.
Kissin and du Pre - and in fact Mozart, who was aired after du Pre, as well - were chosen deliberately because of - and I can only suppose by way of honouring - Chloe!
The theme of the broadcast was "Sweet 16," and it was accompanied by some biographical information about her.
The host explained that the Mozart symphony was composed when he was 16, and that du Pre's performance was given when she was 16. Kissin's performance, having been issued in 1987, was I think taken to have been given when he was 16 too (although in fact the performance had been given earlier in the year, when he was still 15).

Kudos to Chloe and the SSO for a lovely performance. Especially for Chloe, the accuracy and dexterity on the fingerboard and transitions is wonderful to watch. Chloe's ability to produce beautiful baroque music with a modern violin is a special gift. I hope she will want to explore Bach in the near future because it will open more windows to developing her unique voice...and we will all be grateful beneficiaries. Thank you SSO for uploading.

    >>"Locatelli wrote beneath the first movement's capriccio: "Laberinto armonico: 'Facilis aditus; difficilis exitus.'"
This is what Wiki says too, but is it true?
If would be odd. if true. As others have said, the caprice #23 isn't much of a labyrinth.
It would also be in conflict with the only score I have seen, in which Locatelli's inscription appears at the head of the whole concerto, not under the first movement caprice (#23).
For the inscription to cover the whole concerto makes more sense. The climactic and even more formidable caprice in the third and final movement (#24) is certainly labyrinthine!
