- TW: If you have or are recovering from an eating disorder, please do not watch this video. Also please remember that I ate more than is shown in this video -- I snacked A LOT between meals and had second breakfasts both days because the portion sizes were not big enough. This video was supposed to be educational and just a bit of fun really :) It such tremendous fun to film and I'm so excited for my next Victorian-themed video. A few people have asked in the comments section why I decided to eat like a Victorian child, and not a Victorian adult, for this video. That's basically because there is SO much variety when it comes to Victorian adult diets. Food would differ with seasons, company, social occasions, class, age etc. and it would be impossible to embody all of this in a single video. I hope to do more videos where I try Victorian recipes in the future, and this just so happened to be the one I started with. I learnt a lot about Victorian children's food when doing context research for my Victorian Literature module last year, and thought it would translate into a fun and interesting video. I hope that it was able to teach you something new 😇
Also, do remember that (as I say in the video) I did not just eat the food shown in this video! I ate extra meals and lots of snacks because the meals weren't big enough to keep me going (since I'm not a child!). If you try any of these recipes at home, PLEASE make sure you are eating other foods too because these portions are not big enough x
Absolutely great video as I said before Ruby! Keep it up ❤️😍
I’m not going to get into a comments argument but the things that you are saying can be so incredibly harmful that I am just going to type one comment. Ruby did say in the video that the portion sizes are too small and she would be filling in between with snacks. Social media is a snapshot into a person’s life, it is not supposed to be a perfect recreation of everything that takes place. I have no idea of the size of Ruby’s meals on Instagram, but equally I have no idea how many meals she eats in day because.... it’s none of my business.
To imply that she has an Eating Disorder is utterly and grossly inappropriate. As I said earlier, we witness the tiniest snapshot into her life, and she has curated that snapshot to allow us to witness what she wants us to. The only people who have any rights to comment on her mental heath are herself, her doctor, and maybe her family. If she were struggling with an eating disorder which, as I’ve said, is nobody’s business to diagnose, a comment like yours would only make her feel that her own wellbeing is less important than that of her followers.
Ruby will probably never see this comment and I hope she doesn’t see yours. While she is a UA-camr and she puts her work online to educate and entertain us, she is still a human being. Please just be kind and respectful.
@@amypritchard8570 how is it gross and inappropriate to be concerned about ruby having an eating disorder? have you not been watching her content recently? she talks about drinking ice water when she wakes up (a proana trick to suppress appetite) and has shown that she uses chopsticks to eat fruit (a proana trick to make meals last longer and seem larger than they are) and she had two spoons of rice pudding as a dessert and fed her family cake (people with eating disorders often like to feed their families and loved ones more because it makes them feel better about starving themselves). not to mention being obsessed with childhood, people develop eating disorders trying to retain their childlike bodies. this is all information that ruby willingly puts out there on the internet, i’m not making up or exaggerating. i hope ruby gets the help she needs because she seems so sad and fatigued recently.
@@eleanorcasteel76 Ruby did say in the video (and reiterate in her comment above) that she tends to snack between meals - we see her do so in other vlogs - and that she did so between takes when making this vlog. She also states in the vlog that she knows that her nutritional needs exceed those of a child and makes sure that she meets those needs, but didn't want to show it here as it would detract from the subject matter: a reenactment of a Victorian child's diet.
I can find no evidence in any of Ruby's routine or occasional activities that she is deliberately trying to retain her childhood body. Rather, I get the impression that she is trying to keep her young adult body healthy and ensure that it stays that way for as long as possible. She appears to be getting at least 8 hours of sleep per rotation of the Earth. She is not unique in starting her day with water - hydration is key to good health in any case, and iced water will awaken the system rather more naturally and less 'violently' than caffeinated alternatives. (I know of others that start their day with hot water, getting the feeling of tea or coffee without the additives - the principle is the same.)
And as for feeding her family cake at tea time: that's actually a good way to ensure that a family remains functional whilst individual members pursuing separate lives and activities. The communal eating place is where the family unites, no matter how disparate the members' activities, and conversation and socialising can take place; at this time when our government(s) have deliberately suppressed the inherent social drive of our species in the name of saving lives and protecting the NHS, the most that anybody can do to meet their vital socialising needs is to spend at least some time every day with family, if possible. We have seen that Ruby's mother cooks for the whole family, so it isn't all on Ruby's shoulders to cater for herself or for all of her household. We've also seen that there's variety in her diet and in the family's meals.
@@MS-19 i don’t think you properly read my comment or understood the point i’m trying to make, so i won’t argue with you because i don’t think it’ll make any difference xx
You know you're tired when you read 'I ate a Victorian child...' and stare in confusion for five seconds before realising. I'll watch when I wake up.
@@BonahPerson k just did
That’s not very vegan
Omg lol when I looked at this vid I thought it said that too 😭😂
Same here😂😂😂
💫💫
If I was a kid back then, I’d definitely sneak other food when adults weren’t watching
pretty sure most of them did lol 🤣
@laura yeah it was like the top 3% of the population who were rich the other 97% were either middle class, working class (in the mills, factories, harsh work conditions etc.), or peasants i.e in the work house. so u would most likely not beat the odds and be poor, therefore you wouldn't be able to sneak food, let alone get more than 1 proper meal a day and even then it would probably just be bread and dripping.
lol sorry for the long reply im a bit of a history nerd 😊
@@millyrobinson5757 I wonder though if the working class kids had it "better" insofar as they probably just ate what the adults ate as well and didn't get a specific "children's diet" prepared in the nursery kitchen. So while the adult diet probably wasn't that great either for most people, at least it wasn't just soggy toast.
I truly wonder how a child could survive on this diet.
they didn’t
@@evie4815 too soon lol
@Chevalier that made me wonder if thats the reason why they marry young. They die younger bcs of their shitty diet so they have to produce an heir early.
@laura it has no vitamins (fruit, vegetables), so your immune sistem could not survive as well as almost no protein, so they had to be very weak
@Chevalier dear lord
"Poor victorian children" was my thought the whole time.
me throughout the video: thank god I wasn't a Victorian child 😭
Victorian parents: Johnny, don't touch that apple! It might get you sick!
apple isn't a vegetable
@@pineappletea9063 they never said it was
@@chloegiles in the video ruby said "as you will see vegetables aren't a huge part of a victorian child's diet, they were actually thought to be quite bad for children" so vegetables were thought to be bad, not fruits. It could be that fruits weren't available and that's why they didn't eat it, not that they thought fruits were bad for children
@@pineappletea9063 Vegetables are parts of plants that are consumed by humans or other animals as food. all edible plant matter, including the flowers, fruits, stems, leaves, roots, and seeds are vegetables
@@camilagurgel8453 i don't believe fruits were thought to be bad for children
You should definitely do an ‘unromantic Victorian era things’ video haha
Yes please
This is the video already
Texture is such an important part of food and I could not imagine eating soggy toast.
i cant imagine eating toast full stop. its just icky.
In Bulgaria when I was a kid we also ate bread in milk as breakfast! I loved it!!
My family likes to dunk some sweet bread in milk first to get it soggy before eating it haha
@@LilyEvans1996 I'm Serbian and we have a similar thing! It's a go-to breakfast food in my family. You actually heat milk in a saucepan and then add lots of chopped up bread and some salt. You stir it until it's creamy and delicious and then we eat it with crumbled feta cheese on top. Much better than the Victorian soggy toast in the video!
@@LilyEvans1996 in Poland this was common, too. My mom made this for breakfast now and then.
I really hope Jack is sending you the Victorian Christmas book
LMAO
That’s what I thought when he said he didn’t like the book, lol.

I lost my milk teeth so late dude, and I look younger than I am, and I have sensory issues due to autism so I'd definitely throw up a lot if I tried to force myself to eat this stuff, I'd be so screwed as a Victorian kid

Wow, same to all of that. I definitely would have perished

It may be obvious, but these guidelines on the article you're referring to were addressed for families who could actually afford to feed their children on a regular basis. While studying for my thesis, I came across several sources regarding people even having to resort to opium in order to palliate hunger. Actually, opium in Victorian England is quite a recurrent topic. Highly recommend having a look at some articles if you're interested. 🙂 Lovely content as per usual dear Ruby ❤️
Wouldnt opium be a lot more expensive than food?
@@Cleosbitch Contrary to our conception of opium in the 21st century as a mere drug or narcotic, it may be surprising to know that the use of opium preparations such as Laudanum were widely spread among lower classes and urban population spheres in Victorian society. It could be acquired at any pharmacy for a very cheap price (even as little as a few drops were sold and it was commonly as affordable as 1p). It was not only used to alleviate hunger, but also as a remedy for depression, or - randomly enough - cough for babies up until 1868, when the Pharmacy Act was passed (it introduced regulations on its usage and distribution) 🙂 Hope this helps a bit 🙂❤️
Thank you, this really helped
Ruby definetly should work at some victorian museum as a tour guide
I read it as ‘I ate a Victorian child’ at first and i was like:
WAIT A DAMN MINUTE-
I absolutely loved this video and the whole victorian series. Can't wait for more episodes!
your videos are honestly like cinematography they’re filmed so well!
disIike my vid pls
thank you
Exactly,
That’s so interesting that they split diets up by teeth!
That water does not look like the one ...
My Grandma (90) used to make the first recipe for us, but a bit different! Clump some flour with a little bit of water, so that little flour droplets form. Put them into hot milk with honey and vanilla and let the clumps rest in the hot milk until cooked through (5 minutes). You get sweet milk with little chewy lumps, which the mochi-lovers here could appreciate. :D
Victorian Mochi...love that idea!
@@KatefindsaPen If you like "flour-heavy-meals" like pancakes and pastry etc. then you might like it. I am nearly 30 but still make it from time to time. :) also it doesn't become that slimy texture that Ruby had in her video. It's more like soup with pearl barley
that sounds very good
It used to be a staple breakfast food for children in Poland :) it was called milk soup
Loved this one, you are such a talent with delivering an aesthetic!
Im so in love with this series...thanks for sharing❤ much love
There are some pretty gruesome stories from the Victorian and (I think) Edwardian periods of some of food items like bread and milk being unknowingly poisoned with substances people thought were harmless. History is cool but also sometimes quite disturbing
I loveeee these Victorian videos! Thank you so much Ruby! 💚
Ruby, please film a scullery maid night routine, upper-class woman night routine, victorian child morning and night routine, working class woman morning and night routine! Love all the effort you put into your victorian videos and would love to watch more!!

The Victorian era is so fascinating especially the life of the poor, the class structure, the workhouses and the lives of victorian children. Really interesting to see how the era has shaped the modern western world. Great video ruby!!!! 💞💞
Omg honestly I love old era things in general but these videos are quite entertaining I have to say haha
Great to remember and make clear what Ruby said in the last minutes of the video. Excellent.
I really want a part 2 please Ruby. I love this video !
Ruby, I wanted to let you know that it is videos like these that are some of my absolute favourites of yours! I admire all the research you put into them. I feel like we have a lot to gain from exploring life how it used to be. I do hope you make more someday!

this was so interesting to watch! i loved this so much - you can't even imagine how much you inspire me ruby!
I'm glad I'm not a Victorian child. These looked so unappetizing to me
Awesome !! Ruby I really like to watch your videos because I always watch something new in your videos so thank you...☺
Your video was so fun to watch and to see how your experiment went...and thank you for the commentary at the end about the very trying times this was in which to live...I am lactose intolerant so all that milk would have really been a torture to endure at each meal as it seemed such a staple at every meal...
Educational, victorian themed Ruby videos are so great❤ not just we, Ruby enjoys them too!
Omg, I haven’t even watched this yet but I’m so excited!!! I love when you do these Victorian videos 😁🥰
Absolutely brilliant! Loved this!!
Love this series!
As an indian I am amazed to see that humans can eat food without any spices in it😂
As an Indonesian, same. Whenever I tasted bland foods it's like an insult to my tastebuds.
Oh yeah. Paratha for breakfast is the best
And palak paneer!!

Such a unique video idea Ruby! I love how every meal you weren't sure about but then tried it and went 'that's actually really nice!!'

This was so interesting Ruby! It’s great how you give little lessons instead of just doing and eating the meals! Love this kind of videos!
My mom and grandma made us milk toast (minus the sugar) whenever my siblings and cousins and I were sick growing up. It’s actually pretty easy on the stomach, though I think it was mostly a comfort food for us as kids.
I really liked this video! I’m definitely trying the milk bread because the way you described it, it honestly sounds quite good :)
i love the authenticity and the research that you put in !
I absolutely loved this Ruby! Can’t wait to see more like this and you can tell that you really enjoyed making and doing this. I learnt so much too :)
this is a MASTERPIECE omg i love it so much 💖
this is so well done, you must have done so much research and everyone can really tell that this is a subject you are passionate about! it is informative, but in such a causal and engaging way. I really like this series you're doing!
Great content, Ruby. Love your style. We need Ruby's Finishing School for Girls. Also, I ordered your novel. Have a great Easter.
These Victorian routines are so enjoyable and educational 😍
I’m impressed that you took the time to make all of these foods. I know it’s a lot of work to cook several times a day! PS I wouldn’t be able to drink water with bits of bread floating in it, either.
the digestion bit reminded me of a christmas carol where one of the possible explanations scrooge attributed to seeing marley was an undigested bit of potato. very interesting concern to have.
I really like your voice ruby, it’s just so calming and soothing!
And your productivity never fails to amaze me
You always put a smile on my face
Haven't seen the video yet but i already know im going to love it 😁
I adore how educational your videos are, they remind me of those by the lady with curly hair who also speaks of things like growing up and the dangers of... I can't quite recall her name!
Btw..Ruby I really really love your vlogs.... And Nowadays I cannot think of passing my days without watching them....💜
I really enjoyed your video and i would like to ask you whether you are able to do a video of your favourite films or favourite victorian theme / dark academia movies?
I want to try this!! Looks so fun researching Victorian recipes :)
I think it was not only to make a child not greedy but also stopped picky eaters. Plus children were thought to have a more delicate stomach than an adult (I remember being told this as a child when I was served a different dinner than the adults.) I do make milk toast at times. try it with a slice of cinnamon and raisin bread.
This was really interesting and well made! I love your Victorian videos! You always do such good research and I feel like I learn so much.
I've become so interested in Victorian period just by watching Ruby's videos..

In my country we have a version of roly poly but we bake the dough flat without the filling, then fill and roll after it has cooled down. I didn't realize the British roly poly is filled before baking it so when you started to spread the jam on the raw pastry I was very anxious for a moment :D Glad to have learned something new about British food culture!

LOVE YOUR VICTORIAN SERIES. ... THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS EFFORT
As a Victorian period nerd and fanatic lol This was so interesting and educational!!! It is a bit distasteful and disheartening to see what children had to eat during this time honestly but I thought it was so fascinating about fears concerning proper digestion (As a nursing major this also fascinates me lol). As someone who has a pretty sensitive digestive system and struggled a lot as a child with foods that disrupted my digestion harmfully, I can see why they feared indigestion and tried to value gut health, it does truly impact how you feel overall! I am glad we realized though that veggies are good and flavorful food is not harmful to children! 😂 That bread and water drink...oof lol but I might try the milk toast though!!!
This was so interesting!! I really want to try this a little bit
Can we just take a moment and talk about how AMAZING that kitchen and stove are?!
