Fabric can prevent water from reaching plant roots, forcing them to grow along the surface of the fabric instead.
It can prevent mulch from decomposing by isolating it from the soil. Over time, mulch can turn into a solid block instead of decomposing into nutrients that help plants and weeds.
Microorganisms
It can block beneficial microorganisms from passing through the soil.
Weeds. It can eventually become clogged with soil particles, reducing its ability to allow air and water to pass through. This can cause weeds to break through the fabric and grow anyway.
That’s why we cut a slit for our plants to grow. That’s so they can grow and the weeds can’t grow around them. Coming from a fourth generation farmer.
I have made slits along the holes for plant holes and the fabric is NOT from the box stores and no weeds that are growing from the 4 inch mulch bed.
THANK YOU!!! I’m a curious person and though this info will never matter I’m so glad you put it there. I was like, seemed easier for you to clean than if you have to dig it up, so isn’t it better? But this explanation made it make perfect sense.
Charge triple. To remove!! Simple
Not on the better fabrics that stop even oak tree suckers from breaking the fabric .
Why would someone actually upload a video like this. Don't state an opinion, but withhold your reasoning.**THIS COMMENT WAS MADE 5 days BEFORE PINNED COMMENT.
He said " No good " , and that's good enough for me !!!
@@stoneysscapes7544 but I'm so hungry for his knowledge and understanding?
But "No good" will just have to suffice. Dang It!
I agree. The author should explain why
Because it's not an effective means of weed prevention it literally just causes problems and solves nothing
If your mulch layer it thick enough 3-4" you don't need it. I've never had problems with weeds when my mulch is at the proper thickness
Not only did you not give reasons why to not use this product, you never told us what product not to use.
I mean he did say under the mulch and there one thing under the mulch but I do wonder why not use it…..
It's the fabric, people do it to stop weeds from growing. In reality it blocks the mulch from decomposing & bringing moisture into the soil. That's just being lazy, if you don't want to pull weeds use a pre-emergent like "preen", it stops new weeds from growing for 3 months. I recommend doing the first one in March before weeds start growing.
I’ll give you a reason. Cockroaches love them. They breed by the thousands under there.
It's meant to separate rocks from dirt , lots of reasons to skip for mulch
Comments has the reasoning

Don't put termite food around your house .. mulch is wood.
Don't own a house then. It's made out of wood.
@@spoopyac3wood that's treated..
Bugs hat ceder and Cyprus mulch
@@spoopyac3 soft wood, decomposing wood attracts the termites and roaches because they eat soft decomposing wood. The fabric gives shelter to snakes and insects and Beatles and roaches. If buying or selling a home a inspector will let the buyer know that so in negotiating a price you can use that against the price of the sale.
Use cedar shaving bugs don't touch it and smells good too
I used do put fabric down but weeds just grow on top. It was a waste of time.
It stops weeds from spreading into the ground. The top weeds are isolated.
@@insurgent216still defeats its purpose it’s supposed to prevent weeds in the yard and it doesn’t even do that. Doesn’t even allow the mulch to do it’s job and break down into compost into your soil to benefit whatever you have planted. Easy way to prevent weeds is to have an established garden and plant up any bare spots in the yard, not hard to do most people just don’t want a diverse and crowded garden
@@malicaicalder4654😂😂😂 you do understand how plants reproduce and grow right?. The membrane is to stop the plants already in the soil from growing up through it, it won't stop the seeds on the wind or in bird shit from growing it just makes it incredibly easy to pull them up.
Also a weed is just a plant you don't want
@@TruthBombzz the weed fabric doesn’t make it easy to pull up, you’re entitled to your opinion though. Many homeowners say the fabric is useless because they still pull weeds out when it’s supposed to prevent them all together
@@malicaicalder4654it not a opinion its fact, it does stop weed from growing in the ground/ soil/ dirt as the membrane covers it plants then can only grow in what ever media you put on top of the membrane and they are easier to pull because they are only in the media not the ground/soil/dirt where roots get a extremely firm hold unlike gravel/rocks/pea shingles/pebbles.
Bro everyone got it all wrong. The point of this fabric is to stop weeds, the problem is that it doesn’t stop weeds😂
Facts!!!
I never had a problem with weeds when I use this product
I don't have many problems with weeds. Occasionally, a few dandelions or walnut sprouts pop up, but thankfully not too many. I have some sweet gum trees, so there are some small sprouts, but I can easily discourage them by using a little rake. I also don't have any issues with the other plants growing and thriving. Of course, like anyone with a wooden house, I have to treat for termites.
No sunlight, no new weeds. Cuts weeding by 99.9%. Exception ... torpedo grass. Nothing short of a concrete slab stops that stuff.
Didn't see any weeds growing in this bed
Cardboard and layered grass clippings will keep weeds from growing, of course this works best for raised or lasagna beds. But it will work if there’s enough soil and nutrients layered on top. Layer in the order of cardboard, grass clippings and raked leaves, then adequate soil and manure on the top layer. You can add a tin layer of grass clippings over the soil, but too thick on the grass will prevent moisture from permeating your soil. You can stir everything together in the early spring of the next season and add more of whatever you need to and can fit back in that area. Nothing stops weeds from growing up through your garden like a base layer of cardboard and grass clippings, promise ☝️
I want a lasagna bed
Yep, been doing this for years!
Cardboard attracts roaches
Good alternative is plain brown cardboard.
You can use paper yard waste bags as a substitute for fabric and it will decompost over time, allowing good bugs to have shelter and a food source.
"underneath of" bugs me!
Listen to this advice. Weed fabric is short sighted and only harms the soil food web in the long term. There is definitely a place for the use of landscape fabric under walking paths, but nobody with knowledge of soil ecology would recommend this. Yes, ‘weeds’ will come through the mulch again, but then you clear weeds and mulch again. Building excellent soil takes years or work and allowing your soil time to balance.
Weed fabric is just a piece of fast food gardening to go along with our fast food culture. Good things take time and work. Our soil and land is no different.
And why not. Not never done any damage that I have found. Been going landscaping for years. I'll keep using it
I do agree with you. I have quite a big bedding with that in. It helps a lot where you have plants with sharp leaves.
It is difficult to de-weed this area, but then I will admit that I did put a lot of pebbles on this weed net.
It works excellent and looks great.
Have it now for a few years, but I must admit that I remove the pebbles with times and lift the weed net for the ground to 'breath' for a day or two and then replace the old net with a new one, rinse the pebbles and put them back.
Because it's usually a cheap and horrible product that only lasts one season. After that it literally creates basically superweeds that you cannot pull out. I have been in the industry for 20 years and the only time you should ever use it is if it is in an area that you will never have to Edge or dig ever again. However he is absolutely correct that you can use it under rocks. When you put it under mulch all it does is create super weeds and also creates a ton of mildew because it doesn't drain properly. Also Mother Nature will end up destroying it
@@elvalenaklopper3656yes because it works great with rock. Not mulch. Anyone that puts out new mulch every other year and a lot of people do it yearly, the fabric is only getting deeper under ground and becomes worthless.
Cardboard works so much better

As a gardener professionally, I've found plant's grow better without it. Organic matter doesn't break down and filter through. Worms can't pass to the surface.
You got worms?
Is the problem the fact that you hate having to work harder to remove it?
It's actually easier this way! Roll it up and take it away! Just not good for the landscaping
@SpencerLawnCare this is the one comment ypu answer and still don't say WHY?
What kind of problems?
Moisture
Took the words right out of my mouth...
Big
No problems, just problems with him trying to pull it up
Microplastics leeching into your yard
I do my own, and I prefer it this way. It doesn't cause problems. It's just a foreseeable part of the process.
Saying it causes problems, to me, is like saying that driving your car creates problems because you have to fuel the car and change the oil and, eventually, the tires.
I agree I've been doing it for years without any problems
Heck yeah
Cardboard works wonders, keeps weeds out, and when time to clean up old mulch for new, it breaks up when raked up, and it's biodegradable, and use diatomaceous earth on top and under for bugs.
Yes!! ❤❤❤
Any problems with it getting moldy?
@brasshouse9822 Not that I could tell
Bugs are good. No diatomaceous earth.
@cmbells7736 Bugs aren't good when you're using around your house, diatomaceous earth helps with ants, roaches, termites, and so on, and it's being used underneath the mulch and cardboard so it will not harm any beneficial flying insects.
REALLY big problem. I didn't even realize that it was the combination of mulch and that underlining that caused so much mold AND mildew to grow all over my entire garden. My fruits. My vegetables. My flowers. My herbs. I was so disappointed that I stopped growing for several years. Once I pulled that liner up and got rid of the mulch, EVERYTHING started growing again. I'll still use the liners, but that organic mulch from Home Depot? Nope. We switched to river rock.
Nothing worse than powdery mildew. It's something mom taught me about, that I forgot. She's not here anymore. My green thumb seems to have gone with her. RIP MOMMY. . Her birthday is 7-13. The anniversary of her leaving us - 7-20- 85. She was 48. Sorry. Sad day today. She was 48.
There is a number of good reasons why you would want to put down fabric before your mulch. And there are some where it is unnecessary to put it down when you mulch. State the facts if you just gonna say it
Ditto!
But..... you didn't explain anything either.
@@cfarr18I was going to say the same, no one is backing up their opinion with facts..
Nonsense😅
We found the homeowner that does their own landscaping
lol absolutely nothing wrong with using that with mulch. Causes absolutely no problems
Plastic particulate. I mean I guess it's already in our blood but ohh well eh. Respect the mother.
I see what you did there
Actually ants get under the cover and they can't be treated because the product never penetrates to the soil where the ants are
Good luck with that.😅
Nonsense. That stuff is only found in the yards and gardens of people who do not know what they are doing.
Shouldn't plant stuff next to your home anyway. When I bought my house, we tore out all the plants around the house and put down plastic, then rocks. No freaking plants next to your home.
Why?
@saberxzero because it's bad for the house. Plus, I rented a house a few years before buying my current one, and it had ivy growing up the side up of up . Pushing shingles off as it went. It's just better to keep it tidy. Even inspectors will mention it during their inspection. I think all plants are supposed to be at least 2 feet away from the house.
Really garlic is a great way to keep Asian beetles out of ur house. Also different plants like lemon grass keeps misquote away.
@Wherethewindblows524 There are probably good things to plant next to your house, but it's a good rule in general.
Thank you for explaining why or what kind of problems. Appreciate you waisting everyone's time
Then why are you in the comments, if you're not using your brain, looking for the How's & Why's.
I just bought a house. The lady had this all over. I'm having to remove it. Carpenter ants love this shit!
all ants!!!
If you install your mulch at a proper depth, the fabric isn't needed anyways.
Just pay attention to what kind of weed barrier you are putting down. There are different qualities and purposes behind different fabrics. Geofabric, plastic barrier, various puncture hole sizes in plastic or nylon options for different applications. Fabric absolutely has its place and sometimes it's a landscape bed with plants and drip(use the wrong fabric and your plants die, use no fabric and you cultivate weeds)
What kinds of problems???????? I wanna know.
Don’t get rid of the organic material on top of the weed barrier. Keep that in the garden
It also prvents weeds from being fertilized by the mulch. Who knew😂😂😂😂 if you raked the mulch up your silly arse woukd get the job done much better.
You are correct. Why use fabric. People think it prevents weeds. The weeds will just grow in the mulch on top of the fabric. And BTW the mulch prevents the weeds. Think people.
Exactly.
People are brainwashed by cooperations to keep buying stuff they don’t need. Taking that stuff away from them is like taking their security blanket. They get angry.
Mulch alone doesn't prevent weeds unless you have it like 8 inches deep. A few inches of Mulch will still allow weeds to germinate and grow abundantly.
I've been doing basement waterproofing for years and the other companies won't tell you. Build up dirt/sand up to block so the rain will roll off then Use thick black plastic 4ft. Caulk urethane against block.(Look for cracks in block, fill with urethane)
I generally use pea Rock over blk plastic.
Basement waterproofers charge tons of money.
Please elaborate
I've done the same with used fabric-reinforced pool vinyl material ramped @ about 15-20 degrees off the foundation, 3-5 feet out. Covered with rocks. Works to keep basement dry. Powerwash debri out every few years.
Lmao bro i use those for multiple reasons and i rly dont give a shit what this dude says.
We don't care
And sooooo... how do you prevent weeds/vegetation?
Weed barriers are a joke. Whatever your grass guy cuts with his mower will spread to each customer.
It happened to my father's lawn. He had nice grass until he hired a rinky-dink landscaper. Now it's all weeds, clover, crabgrass and a variety of wildflowers
You are absolutely correct. I had a landscaper do that to me.
Grass guy? We mow our own yards. I've been using this fabric for years on my crops with no problems. A few weeds get through but cuts down 95% of them. Where I live, it is a must. Not sure what you mean with spreading it to other customers.
@mccartneystuart Crops? we're talking mulch beds not cornfields. There's a difference. You don't know what he means by "Grass guy"? ..anyone with the capacity for reasonable deduction will know he's talking about the guy he pays to mow his lawn. Some people call them "landscapers". Perhaps you've heard of them?
What problems does it cause
Instead of landscape fabric use a couple layers of newspaper. I learned this from my grandmother. She never had weeds in her flower beds and her plants, shrubs and flowers did beautifully. It will last for years!
Newspapers? I've heard stories about this from old timers. Legend has it mysterious children would walk the streets in the early morning hours and throw them at your house.

That fabric is a waste of time and money.
I hate landscaping fabric with a passion
I’d never recommend weed barrier. There are some uses, but generally you’re adding plastic to the ground. And eventually mulch and dirt and seeds I’ll be on top of that, and you are back to weeds. Might as well just pick weeds as you see them, stay on them and they are never an issue
Mulch is not only termite food but a fire hazard. Rocks are better and safer
I use it and have zero problems with my landscaping. Only problem I see here is it's heavy as heck for you to move it to redo.
So you are saying, I believe, that when using landscape fabric you cover with rocks, not mulch? I'm just about ready to do this.
I have always used mulch never had an issue . WHAT issues does it cause ?? YOU NEVER SAID
Maybe for you.... But I don't see any weed growing.... How many years did they not have to get on their knees and pull weeds.... How is that a problem einstein..
Why?? What would the big problems be? The problems might be worth it to me. Could you suggest what should go under it?? Or do YOU just not like it?

I've been using filter fabric for years and never had an issue. What your problem. Maybe your doing something wrong
Rocks? I bought s house that had beautiful lava
Rocks in the flowerbeds. Come fall, the leaves covered everything. You can’t take leaves off of rocks. You can’t blow leaves cuz the rocks move. I’ve been working on picking out rocks for twenty years now. They make an excellent fill in a low area prone to erosion. I’d rather fight weeds and be able to till the soil than fight rocks or this crap.
Mulch and garden that close to a wall is not that smart in my opinion. Just put scoria and drain coil to keep your house dry. Well that's what you do in New Zealand as it rains all the time...
If you have to mulch next to the house, because the wife just wants her way... be sure to get colored mulch! Not natural! Stained colored mulch will at least give the bugs a slight deterrent. Natural mulch... you're just begging for the to be in your house
Oh , a Preen commercial , when you cant grow anything on the front of your house due to no sunlight ... You do what ever makes the job easier when your 60 ! A little squirt of Roundup on the weeds and consider it done ! Easy peasy !
