- Scott and Bart taste/review the new Dalmore Port Wood Reserve a Highland scotch bottled at 46.5% abv. This is a non age statement offering from Dalmore but does come in a higher abv than we usually see from Dalmore.

Scotch It! You scotch gods.
Hello from Scotland. I just got this bottle for my birthday yesterday. Looking forward to trying it out properly this weekend.
Nice, let us know what you think!
I am thinking of trying to smoke a cigar with this one but afraid the scotch would be too powerful for pairing with even full body cigars. Is it correct guess or this port wood should be fine?
Is Dalmore Cigar malt actually a perfect scotch for pairing with cigars as they intended it to be?
any time i smoke a cigar with whisky i always choose a powerful whisky. I made the mistake once of using a lighter whisky and couldn't taste a thing against the cigar.
@@ScotchTestDummies I guess it depends on cigar too. I wouldn't pair something like davidoffs/Montecristo white series/Drew estate undercrown connecticut with powerful whisk(e)ys coz they are so gentle and soft, whiskey is needed just to clean pallet and add a touch more flavors.
Back to Dalmore Port Wood, it felt for me that it has extremely powerful mouthful taste, very heavy. And it's awesome, of course, but I fear that it will just not leave any room for a cigar. :)
I am glad if it is not the case, though.
A couple of cigars that I am thinking of smoking with this beast:
Padron 1000's series Maduro, My father La Opulencia..
Most port finished scotch is finished in ruby or vintage port casks, these will give you more fruit and berries. The Dalmore is finessed in Tawny Port which is aged a minimum of 10 yrs. and has more wood and nut on flavor profile. Check out Port differences and flavors.
very nice to know! thanks Gilbert!
This video shows why a duo works so well. You guys are comfortable enough with each other and your own palates to just out disagree - and it's fine. Exactly as it should be. In my experience, Dalmore is a divisive profile in general, and that's displayed here. Great assessment boys. I get the same bitterness as Bart. At its worst it can come over as vegetal or saccharin notes. Not a fan.
after your comment on S4D's review, I went back that night and had a dram to see. I still love it and find it delicious. Thanks Roy! Scott
Awesome review guys! I am one of those Dalmore haters but this one sounds good and their choice to bottle at 46.5%ABV makes me think that they might be considering a change in their policy for the better. Scott, I love port matured whiskies as well ...so I think I would like this one. Cheers boys!
its a good one to try.
Being a fan of port finishing (and a sucker for Dalmores bottle design) I'll have to try this🙂
I just had an independent Dalmore at 46%, no color and no cold-filtration today - it was pretty amazing🙂
We do like Port finishes
I just went back to a half full bottle of Tomatin 18yo after two months. It has greatly improved.
We like it a lot
Hi guys, this was an interesting review on this particular Dalmore expression. While I have not been a fan of Dalmore in the past, I am willing to give this higher ABV version I try. Unlike some people, I do not get hung up on NAS whiskies. Like it or not, due to supply and demand it is a reality of the current whisky industry. Congrats again on hitting 7,000 subs. Cheers !
thank you Duane!
A tawny port finish is pretty much the only one I generally like.
I would like to try this someday however just to see if I could stand it. I have my doubts.
thanks Jimmy!
Port pipes are long tapered-ends casks made of heavy European oak staves. Holds 172 US gallons.
Yes sir. I was listening to Mark's show where he went behind the label and explained each cask type. Very cool
Scotch Test Dummies Yep, Mark did a great job of explaining the different casks/barrels. Just watched Ben at whisky.com do an interview about Talisker 40 and they discussed how distilleries experimented with different woods. Years ago they mostly wanted something that wouldn’t leak. Found out oak enhanced the flavor.
I doubt this one is chill-filtered at that abv. Looks delicious. Hope I get the opportunity to buy one. Cheers boys.
Good Point
I would bet $ that it is chill filtered. That is something producers want to advertise on the bottle. A good rule of thumb...if it doesn't say unchillfiltered then it probably isn't.
Great review gents! I think Dalmore is heading in the right direction. I'll look for this one, cheers!
thanks richie!
Saw a bottle today for $140. Love me some Dalmore and will likely add this to the family!
Definitely! Thanks A-Aron.
Nice review guys. Thanks Bart for bringing out that Tomatin to compare.
thanks Peter.
I’m glad Bart broke out the Tomatin for contrast and sounds like the Dalmore is a solid buy as well. Honestly, Scott had me at raspberry cheesecake 😁. Another great review guys!
thanks Whiskey One.
Great review as always. How does it compare to Quinta Ruban?
its been so long with the Quinta Ruban we need to revisit.
Dalmore gave me my most regrettable $100+ purchase in the Dalmore 15 . I still drink it occasionally, but I won't pay over $60 for it. So I'm once bitten twice shy about the distillery. But as you mentioned, the Achilles heel was the ABV. Maybe it's time to give it another shot, cheers!
i think this one is definitely worth a try.
First of all: credit where credit’s due. A Dalmore with 46% abv is a rarity, so good on 'em for ratcheting up the alcohol level. That should enhance the aromatics and flavour spectrum to boot, and from what Scot got from the dram, that seems to be the result. Can’t complain about that. But that word „finessed“ - as Bart mentioned with a wry smile - is a humdinger! That’s marketing flannel if I’ve ever heard any. Could mean the final vatting was poured into port casks just a week before the batch was bottled. Could mean anything, if the truth be told. And if it costs 90 bucks a bottle, it’d be nice if the consumer were better informed. But thanks anyway, lads, for the review. I watch your reviews even when the bottle doesn’t interest me in the least. It’s great just to hear your banter and enjoy the show. Keep it up - cheers!
Thanks Russell
it could be they felt like being fancy using finessed instead of finished! do you have any Grey Poupon?! haha Scott
Haven’t seen it around here in South Africa yet but hope it arrives soon! Sounds good! Slainte 😋🥃!
i think its good. scott
Interesting review, how does it compare to the Quinta Ruban? On par or step up?
hadn't the Quinta for quite awhile and had a small sample at a tasting a few months back. it was much better than i remembered. the Dalmore though brings that classic Dalmore darkness coffee/toffee with the port, where i think the Quinta is more light on finish but the port shines a little more without those Dalmore dark notes. that would be an interesting comparison.
I think I missed most of this... You see, i drank a lot before I clicked on it !!!
haha
I gotta say at 46.5% I am curious to see if you can taste the E150 at that strength.😆 You have to admit, there are not a lot of E150 whiskies that bother with keeping their whisky at that strength. Either way, I think I will pick this one up if I see it, just to taste Dalmore at a higher strength. If I don't like it, the Dalmore bottle and fake color always adds that "finesse" that impresses whisky dabblers, so it will still have its uses. Cheers!
great points Duncan. I think you'll like it. scott
Scott Dalmore "finessed" you out of your money. Bart I think you were being generous with your score 😝
haha! i might move mine to a 92. Scott
I love the tawny flavor over the ruby port that so many other port finishes have.
right on
I’m thinking of getting a Woodford reserve Rye
its good.
Enjoyed the video guy's , I'll have to look for that one when I'm out and about.
thanks B Lam.
“The cheerleader waves her cyanide wand, There's a smell of peach blossom and bitter almond. Caryl Chessman sniffs the air, and leads the parade, He knows, in a scent, you can bottle all you made. There's Howard Hughes in blue suede shoes, Smiling at the Majorette smoking Winston cigarettes. And as the song and dance begins, the children play at home, With needles, Needles and pins.” And so closes the lyrics to my favorite Genesis song. Bitter almond you say. Still sounds like a nice dram to try, just not sure I’d get a bottle. Although I did love the King Alexander III...
George Kaplan
You just took me to another world...Im not mad at ya. Someone should supervise those kids though.
Well done Kap
i thought maybe you was having a stroke at first GKap.
And the lamb lies down on broadway
I don't think they could get anymore E150 in that bottle if Dalmore tried, Haha. Dalmore is a bit of a dinosaur, using multiple casks to hide any distillery character is highly frowned upon by whisky geeks, plus the 40%, E150, marketing, pricing and chillfiltering on most bottles. Dalmore markets towards a premium buyer and premium buyers don't care about that and just want to show it off.
I couldn't agree with you more.
yes but this one is 46.5%! and delicious.
Seems like most people that talk smack about Dalmore have not even tried it just because of filtering and coloring. If you tell them it has not of that and give them the same whisky they would go crazy over it. It’s all in their head and they write it off before trying it.
@@raulvalle269 It's been shown you can't actually identify E150 or chill filtration in blind taste tests if there is no change in ABV. Basically, it does nothing to ruin the taste, neither thing ruins anything unless your mind tells you it does before you've had the drink. The only valid criticisms I wil lhear for Dalmore are "overpriced" and "could be improved with higher ABV". In the case of this bottle, neither is true. It's cheaper than the 15yo (probably the sweet spot between cost and flavour) , bottled at a higher strength. Haven't had the Port Wood myself yet, but planning on picking one up. Thouroughly enjoyed the 15yo, and the 12yo isn't bad either. Paid £51 ($80) for my 15yo and consider that about correct pricing.
great review - thanks!
thanks Jason.
Dalmore can be some of the very best. Unfortunately it doesn't show what its capable of until the 25 Year Old bottling and thats a $1k bottle. Macallan may be over priced as well but they show what they are capable of on their 18 year old bottle and even hints of it in their 12. Havent tried this port release yet though. Will give it a try. Cheers Fellas!
i was surprised when i saw it on the shelf as i hadn't heard anything about its release. When i saw 46.5 % instant buy. I think its worth it. Bart was having an off day and doesn't like anything that doesn't have peat in it. scott
I think you guys should hook up for a live show sometime. Mike and Narbe have some great bottles and know their sh@t.
Finessed 🤣🤣! This gave me a good laugh.
Roger that
Dalmore makes its own rules.
as long as its good.
Scotch Test Dummies
I agree!
Dalmore is definitely good whisky. If they would just leave the color and filtering alone it would be a fantastic whisky. I dont understand the marketing strategy behind the extra steps that reduce quality.
👍
I am a Dalmore hater. I don't care about the NAS as the Cigar Malt is decent and bottled at 44%ish which is a big jump. It's pricey tho' we have to fork out about $132AUD for it. Which is about $99USD.
The 12yo and 15yo are abhorrent wishy washy 40%ers that are way more of a price point than they should be.
I would buy this tho', 46+% means it won't be chill-filtered (it will be coloured) and sounds decent. I like Port finishes. Plenty of Australian NAS are matured in port. The Glenmo' Quinta Ruban and Talisker Port Rhuige are both very nice.
I really liked this one. I find the 12 ok but havne't had the 15. The Cigar Malt has now gone to $160 here which is too high.
Scotch Test Dummies wow that is exxy for the Dalmore CM. I wonder if that price is yet to hit us. Aberlour has had a recent price hike but I always thought the prices a little 'unders' anyway so it isnt as bad. Dalmore tho', they charge a but like Macallan here. You can usually buy a really decent 12 at sub $100 but those 2 are always $15 more than more craft presented bottles of the same age.
they way to Scott's heart is through the port, and the way to Bart's is through the peat!
port and / or sherry!
I frown upon NAS because they are refusing to provide info. If a whisky had an age statement of 4 years - I would respect their honesty - & doesn't mean it's necessarily bad.
ouch!
well said.
Just went to a tasting with the rep, although NAS, she said it was about 15 years.
Well it looks good and sounds good but I'll take your word for it :) Put it through Roy's ABCD test. 1 out of 4. Cheers boys!
haha....good point.
Finessed .... yummy review guys!!
Thanks Julia
STD, your right Dalmore is famous for being 40-43% abv, colored and chill filtered. They are way overpriced like Macallan. With their NAS and marketing, I tend to stay away from any purchases. The Dalmore 18 is over $200 and certainly not worth it. Good thing I only paid $90 for my 18 yr. I think they are out marketing themselves along with Macallan. Great review.
Thanks Keith
I think Ralfy has a lot to do about the NAS boycott by serious scotch anaraks. He will not review NAS scotch. As I am not an strict Ralfy follower, I will be looking for a bottle of this.
boom! thanks whiskey and pipes!
After first and second sip the dude on the right looked like he ate as spoon of very hot sauce, not a sip of scotch.
Interesting reaction.
Good point!
Bart need a nap or red bull or coffee before this one lol
Just a better whisky would do
he needs a nap and coffee.
Q, what is “tartness”? Help a Dutch speaker out!
sourness.
When's the last time you guys did a bad review?
when have we had a bad whiskey?!
I didn't.catch what u paid for it..??
Just under $100 here.
Looks like my local total wine can get it for $80-$100. The liquor store selling it for $140 can buzz off!
Boom!
Re-peat😏 Too much E150a in the Dalmore 12 for me. Haven’t tried this one.
i thinks its worth a try. Scott
Can I get a FIRST?!
can i get a whoop whoop!
