  • Dr. Jason Fung provides a detailed description of the physiology of fasting, what happens to our body as we stop eating. Knowing this may help you lose weight. The body transitions by first using glucose from the food. In the second stage, it breaks down glycogen into glucose. In the third stage, it uses protein to make glucose, a phase called gluconeogenesis. After that, the body sustains itself mainly on stored fat. Check out my blog at / drjasonfung

    Here’s my story, two years ago I stopped drinking alcohol stopped eating or drinking any form of sugar. Stopped eating bread grains such as cereals pasta. Started slowly skipping breakfast then eventually lunch. It was hard at first but I was determined to do it. I only eat once a day now. Sometimes I have a cheat meal. Sometimes fast 48 hours sometimes 72 sometimes 24. Starting weight 248 pounds weight as of today 168 pounds. It isn’t easy at first but we’ll worth it. My energy is so good and I can walk without pain in my legs after all that excess weight is gone. And ill be 58 in nine days.

    I love fasting. Been obese for 40 years and nothing worked permanently. I never even considered not eating at all. I prayed my heart out and I believe God led me to IF! It's the easiest thing I have ever done. Down 100 lbs and over half way to my goal. I feel better in every way. Don't get hungry hardly ever and when I do, I just wait it out. My longest fast was 7 days. Just came off of a 5-day fast and will do another one starting Monday. I won't ever go back to 3 squares and snacks. I know for sure that I don't need to eat like that anymore. I eat celebratory foods for my birthday and Thanksgiving/Christmas and then it's right back on to fasting. Right now I'm eating only 3 days a week until I hit my goal and then I'll either do OMAD or Alternate Day Fasting. It's the way I can live the rest of my life. By the way, I'm a female and 66 years old and have absolutely no problems with fasting. Love it!!!!

      "If" I understand Dr. Fung correctly it is OK for us to have snacks, it just depends on what the snacks are. Basically nothing that will spike our insulin.
      So instead of just avoiding the obvious things like cookies, also avoid things labaled low fat because to make up for the lack of taste from taking out the fat, they add lots of sugar and carbs. Instead snack on baby carrots (18 on the insulin index) or cucumber slices (17 on the insulin index).
      I can fast for days easily. My problem is when I come off the fast I over eat AND what I eat is trash. So I'm trying a different approach to weight loss where instead of fasting, or even "calories in calories out" (check out Dr. Fung's video on that), I am going to take Dr Fung's advice and just eat right by sticking to foods that are low on the glycemic and insulin indexes. . . .

    • @dianaaugustine5438
      @dianaaugustine5438 3 роки тому +4

      @@Tryvoie2 I can’t promise you it will solve endometriosis. But being overweight sure is painful in many ways I didn’t even realize, so it should definitely help. What my now husband and I did was just pick one meal a day to eat. We would try to make it roughly 1000-1200 calories, but we didn’t really count. My husband liked to go to a restaurant with the calorie counts on it so he didn’t have to do any calculations. And we took a multivitamin with our meal. Outside of that meal we had only water, and black unsweetened coffee or unsweetened tea. No other food or beverage.
      It works great! I did it for a year and I hit the 100 lbs lost mark! I started getting a regular period for the first time in my life and am now pregnant with our first child!
      Fasting is mentally challenging, but if you can just push through the first 6 weeks or so, you begin to forget about it because it becomes a habit. You just have to remind your self that you are not starving. You’ve already eaten this meal and you are now taking from fat stores.
      Once it becomes a habit, it is in my. Personal opinion, the easiest diet to maintain, because you can eat anything you want. You just have to have it in your eating window. Also, if you can find someone else to do it with you and you, I found the support and accountability very helpful. Good Luck!

    • @Tryvoie2

      Thank you for your response. I'm 70lbs over weight right now. I want to do the 16:8. Did you guys make healthier food choices and did you exercise?

    • @dianaaugustine5438
      @dianaaugustine5438 3 роки тому +4

      @@Tryvoie2 No, we did our normal evening walks we always do, but we didn’t do any extra exercise or change our food choices at all. We didn’t want to do anything that we didn’t see ourselves being able to sustain for the foreseeable future.
      I am also of the opinion that when you are severely overweight as I was, doing hard exercise is more harmful than helpful to the body. Just do what you need to do to make you feel strong and keep you capable of living your life.
      I personally recommend OMAD over 16:8 because I have no self control and once my eating window opens, I can’t stop myself until I am very full. So I actually gain weight on 16:8 because I get full, but then later in that window I just keep eating because a bit of room has opened up in my stomach. It was just better for me to not give myself the option to eat for a longer period of time. Plus after a while, I no longer felt hunger outside of my 1 hour eating window.
      Now that I’m pregnant though, I can’t really keep up the 1 hour window due to nausea and lightheadedness so I’m trying to figure out how to control my portions and I’m really struggling with it.
      But everyone is different. If you are good at having a couple of portion controlled meals during that window, you’ll probably have more success with it than I did. Try it and see what works for you. I know some people who are very happy doing 16:8.

I’ve managed to get back on track with OMAD by balancing my hormones as I consistently eat once per day at around 5pm. Fasting is great but don’t over do it. Like everything it’s moderation :)

    Thank you doctor Fung. Having been a type two diabetic for over 23 years I am now off all 170 units of insulin and 2,000 mil of Metformin. I’m down 45 lbs. This is a result of intermittent fasting 16-20 hours a day and also some extended fasts of 72 hours. I also eat under 20 grams of carbohydrates a day. Although after 9 months of this lifestyle my BS’s aren’t where I’d like them to be, overall I’m healthier at 65 then I was at 45 years old. It gets discouraging sometimes when the numbers don’t improve as fast as you’d hoped but I’m determined to keep moving forward with this lifestyle and looking forward to one day being able to say I’ve finally beat diabetes. Two months ago, I had my labs done after one and a half year of not visiting the doctor due to Covid precaution. The results came back with high blood pressure, type two diabetes and high cholesterol. I told my brother about it, and he suggested watching videos Dr. J Fung. As of today, started fasting a month ago, I've lost 11lbs. My jeans that I couldn't fit into for years slip right up. Thirty more pounds and I should be at my ideal weight for my height.
    My fasting plan goes as follow: My last meal is between 5 and 6pm. My first meal is between 12 to 1pm, two meals per day. In addition, I cut out dairies, reduce my race consumption by 75% each meal and *ABSOLUTELY* no fast food, junk food and sugary drinks. My girlfriend started with me and she also lost 11lbs so far (in a month).

    My 14 year old daughter has started fasting. She just survived her stage 3 cancer diagnosis this March. The treatment that has saved her life took away her very fit body in a matter of a few weeks. She gained around 50 lbs. She says it’s hard to look in the mirror bcuz she doesn’t recognize herself overweight and without hair. She says fasting helps deal with the nausea from her medication and she just feels better. She does a 16/8 & a OMAD. I just want her to feel happy and good in her body again, so I’m supportive of her choice. Is fasting okay for a teen recovering from cancer?

      @@virgoteaze No. Your daughter is absolutely doing the right thing. Her body has survived a trauma. You are absolutely correct when you say the treatment that saved her life changed her body but it is only temporary. Her body will adjust and heal but it takes time. I now eat Carnivore or a meat based keto way of eating .It has been the best thing ever. It allows the body the rebuild and eliminates any possible food sensitivities. There is a web site called meat heals rx that has so many inspiring testimonies. Unfortunately mainstream media and even the drs will say otherwise but when you survive something like that you need to take your health into your own hands and follow your instincts. When I was getting chemo there would be trays of sugared donuts around and I just could not believe it. I eat a meat based diet and exercise on a cellerciser. It is a small trampoline and works to heal every cell in your body. Quick and easy and gives you oxygen, Cancer cannot exist in an oxygen rich environment. No sugar because sugar feeds cancer. They use a sugar solution in PET Scans because it makes cancer cells visible. Sad that these simple measures are not in treatment. Please fell free to reach out again. Not only have I gotten through cancer almost 15 years ago but I am a nurse. I have learned more through my own journey than I ever did in school about cancer. Fasting and a whole food plant based diet had me loose 42lbs in 13 weeks. I eat an early breakfast and lunch by 11 am and fast for 20 hrs a day. I have cheat days too, but am mostly vegan. Dr Micheal Gregor has been a blessing also on teaching my the right foods to eat. I started at 241 now I'm 199, will go to 160 lbs. I'm 51 and for the first time in months I have had no random palpitations and my knee arthritis is so much better, and my bp med is half already. I asked a physician why they don't encourage this lifestyles, I was told" we see way too many patients and the time isn't there, and most people don't wanna hear that, just want a pill". How eye opening, you really have to take your health in your own hands!!! I wish all here well!!!

      I wouldn’t take Dr Gregor too seriously. Many people have ended up very sick following his advice.

    I live in a country where a lot of people think that if they explain things so that everyone can understand, it lowers their reputation for being clever. "If everyone can understand my subject, then I'm nothing special."
    However, my view is that it's only the very clever people that can break things down and explain them in simple words that everyone can understand. This video shows you what I mean.
