  • What do you do if your second gen Camaro is wadded up in a difficult to fix corner? Well, ya fix it. How do you fix it? You think your way through the process and move carefully... and if you can't figure it out.. call someone in that does! Chris Slee ‪@kiwiclassicsandcustoms9160‬ stops by to get me Un-stuck on proper SOP on this rocker replacement. I don't have any instructional ‪@paintucation‬ videos on unibody straightening, mostly fundamental refinish and repair, and this has got me thinking, It may be a good idea to show some of this type of repair.... SO!! Here we are.Bottom Line, rocker panels are the FOUNDATION, everything has to be solid and straight at the bottom.
Thanks for watching!! Subscribe, and like if you like it!!

I was a mason( block, brick, concrete not temple) for many many years. One of my mentors told me early on "If a job is worth doing it's worth doing it right." You done the right thing by replacing the rocker. Never feel the need to explain why you're doing something correctly.

"Struggle with being old and tired and still want to do the right thing". Boy did that quote resonate with me. At times like that, I try to remind myself that it's better than when I was young and always in a rush. Now I take my time, whatever time that takes. Thank you again for a great episode, I learned a lot. Kiwi is about to get a new sub. Take care, loving the Camaro ~ Chuck

You can't beat a Kiwi for straight talk and no BS, mate. Especially one that knows his stuff like Chris does. Then again, being a Kiwi myself, I might be a touch biased (haha!). I've followed my ex-pat for a couple of years now since I found him on the old 'Tube and yeah, he gets some lovely vehicles in there....and also some scary ones, but nothing he works on himself is done by half. The great thing Kevin, is that - like Chris - you ask questions about stuff you aren't 100% certain of, even though you are a master in your own craft. Your level of workmanship and attention to detail is something we can all aspire to and I wish more panel shop owners over here in Kiwiland worked the same way. Maybe its because the good ones have all upped sticks and gone over there to work on good old American muscle, eh? If you think about it though, you KNEW from the outset you were going to replace that entire rocker because you'd always be second-guessing yourself if you didn't. If you do it right, you only need to do it once. Looking forward to seeing more on this beast - she's going to be way different to the sad thing that was dragged in your shop from Derek's place, for sure! All the best

Kevin, that was a great episode! I like your methodology. Now I want to see you introduce bag, tag and tape to Derek at VGG!😂. Also, the right type of gloves and glasses!!😂😂. Back in the late 1950s, my father was a panel beater for "The Northwestern Roadcar Company." He straightened buses. I used to assemble kitchen cabinets as a teenager and recognise all the door adjustment moves. Also, during my youth, I got involved in bodywork at a local garage because I was artistic! We were an aluminium, pop-rivet, and P38 filler shop. We did budget repairs, dolled up by a visiting painter in a polythene tent. Today was a great reminiscence back to happy times. Thanks very much. Regards, Stephen.

I love that you are willing to do the hard work to make it right, and even better that you are sharing it with the world. Plus no matter how much we learn, we don’t know everything, and I share your appreciation and humble enough to ask for help. Guys like you and Chris are quickly disappearing from the trades. I’m in my 28th year of working on aircraft and up until a few years ago, high time techs out numbered new people. Now it’s quickly becoming new techs out numbering the high timers. During the pandemic we lost centuries of experience, because the company offered a buyout incentive to mechanics to retire. In my shop of about 45 mechanics we lost 10-13 guys. They alone were about 350 years of experience. Many of them seriously talented and I miss being to talk to them when I needed advice. Our company is still struggling to find new people to replace our aging workers.

Kev. For the windshield clip posts, I took a flat head galvanised nail, drilled through and welded it from the back. This way it's metal, gal, welded in and you can treat the back where you have welded. Only possible I'd you have access to the back like you will with the roof.

Kevin, in instances where I'm not trying to save the first panel layer, I switched to a hand held belt sander from harbor freight to grind the spot welds off to release the first panel layer. Its actually pretty quick way of removing panels. Added bonus to this is method you don't have to spot every weld with a drill, you already group the remaining weld the second layer panel, and belts are inexpensive compared to the cost of broken spot weld bits. Give it a whirl it's a game changer! God bless and much success.

The old saying "If the part doesn't fit, get a bigger hammer" comes to mind. Nice work; enjoying the journey on this project. Fun learning exactly how unibody goes together. I got rear ended in my 1993 Honda Accord by a giant Toyota Max pickup and the passenger rear quarter was pushed in 6 inches and down 4 inches! He was brake locked skidding but probably doing 30 MPH on impact. Body shop quoted $6,300.00 to fix it. Still going after dude for replacement costs...

Hoosier Garage with Adam is doing a similar rebuild as you’re doing on this Camaro but on his 72’ Plymouth Duster.
Would you find and replay one of your complicated multiple colored paint job from one of those other shows, where you painted the car in patterns and 3 to 4 different colors? It was a 60’s car, I think a Ford Falcon? I could be mistaken!

Derek gonna regret selling to you once this is done. With the time, care and thought you are putting into this car, I can't wait until its done! Will be the best 1974 on the road!

I normally drill out the spot welds then use a air hammer to separate the panels.. Great video !!

Kevin you are a amazing mechanic and body man. I just did the roof skin on my duster. You gave me the strength to go for it!!!! Thanks again, brother!!! I’m proud of you for holding back on your blue language with that Camaro. I know it’s hard buddy. Don’t worry. I’m filling the blanks for you!!!!!😂😂😂😂

was laughing my ass off watching you try to start with a spot weld cutter. Pre drilling is a must for those things. I use a narrow step drill!. Much betterer and done fast!

I've been watching you ever since I saw you years ago on the Eastwood. Instructional videos and I saw when you did Zed sled. I'm so excited that you have your own UA-cam channel. I've been watching every video. Keep up the good work. I really enjoy your content I. Live here in Northeast Alabama, near the road course that you went on. So maybe sometime when you race here I could watch you take that miada and tear up the track

Kevin, I like to use a pneumatic spot weld drill and a file belt sander in areas applicable to grind out welds. It seems to work faster for me. Looking forward to seeing more on the Camaro Great Work!

Thank you for showing the reality involved with this restoration. It is hard when you get stuck inside your own head and always good to have someone you can call.

This kind of video helps those of us who don't know how this is all assembled. As well as what to look for in proper realignment. Imagine fully welding in a rocker and then finding your door will never fit. Misery.

I can't believe that it only took what...a couple decades ? for me to find your videos. I loved your work when you were on trucks, and was really sad to see you go. I've been watching the old power block videos regularly and it boggles my mind that it took the all-knowing algorythm this long to show me your channel! You haven't changed a bit! I wonder if you keep in touch with any of the other power block guys?

@@paintucation it's probably odd to someone on the other side of the camera, but you guys were in my living room every weekend, you alnost felt like you knew the people! They all seemed like a good bunch of guys, and i did hear about Joe, i can imagine that must have been hard. Anyhow, I'm loving the content here and making my way through your catalogue. All the best!
