  • What is healing? In the field of mental health, healing is not merely managing symptoms or getting out of an illness but it is a complex journey in itself.
    Imagine life being a road, and we all are striving hard to reach the finish line. While others find this road comparatively smooth or with a few obstacles, a person with past trauma can see it differently. The reminders of past trauma are like ‘thorns’ hiding below the smooth-looking road. Every time the person tries to walk on the road, they unknowingly step on the thorn and get hurt. This new hurt adds on to the pain of the past and makes the person immobile for a while. When they get up again, they are very scared that they will step on some unknown ‘thorn’ again. This thought itself is not making them move and creating a life path which can be full of fear, anxiety and uncertainty.
    When this person goes through a healing journey, they will first learn to heal from the recent hurt, understand what triggers are and how to spot them. Soon enough, they will be able to catch cues and avoid stepping on thorns and if, by accident, they step on those, they will have enough resources to be able to come back to their original strength much faster.
    In the next stage, they will gain the power to diffuse the power of most of the thorns by eliminating the source of it by processing the trauma source/ incident. After this, they will not be left with any hidden obstacles, just the ones that everyone else has.
    This beautiful metaphor explains the healing journey.
    So you see, healing is a journey that one begins with the step of self-awareness and understanding that our past experiences have been painful and that these experiences impact our day-to-day functioning. One is able to understand how certain events, people, or environments can trigger some emotions and behaviour in us. In the journey of healing, we learn what our positive and maladaptive coping mechanisms are and how, through resource building, we can cope more positively and lead a more than functional life. The journey further enables us to actually process our traumatic experiences in a way that will no longer cause similar triggers or affect our functioning in the long term.
