@@j..w443 The Rede line is great for a budget line, and you will enjoy it. The rod is going to be your biggest purchase. I can't recommend a rod for lots of reasons. But I would say 6# mid to mid tip. Try and find somewhere you can cast before deciding. I travel for 3 hours to sport fish where they have a casting pool. You can get a rod and get used to it. but much better if the rod suites you, not the other way around. Reels is no big deal, unless you are playing hard fighting big fish. But a bit bigger is not a bad thing as it will be built up with backing and give a better coil for the fly line. You would fit in with us boys by the sounds of it. You pretty much hit the nail on the head with regards to all of the variables that contribute to presentation and speed of retrieve to get the best out of your fishing. My wife has finally got the bug and accelerated into a very capable fisher lady. Her continual questioning attitude gives me great delight to share nuggets of knowledge which a lot of your videos endorse. This year is her third year of properly giving her fishing some serious attention to detail, and long may it last. When we watch your videos together I find she takes some of your direction and tips on to her next adventure, which usually ends with fish in the net. Cheers. Kind Regards. I think your wife taking up fishing is amazing. And good on you for supporting her. You do hear a lot of men shrug the idea of there partners taken fishing up. I would have loved it if my wife had an interest. It sounds like you are a great couple and you will both benefit from this. She may well be new to fly fishing, but believe me she will pick up on thing that you may well over look. And sometimes looking at things from a different perspective can open a lot of doors. Thank you so much for the comment and subscribe. Also wish you both lots of fishing happiness. Shaun.
Thanks Norm, I almost started to cover sink lines on rivers at the same time. But I soon realised this video was getting to long. Besides most of my subscribers are still water. I did watch a video just out on sink lines by Mad River something, they are telling everybody that when you retrieve the sink line it stops sinking. Could not believe my ears. I did comment saying there must be something wrong with my Rio lines. Told me to ring there shop and get it sorted. But reading there comments, its what they tell every body. Why do people put up with this shit. My grunt over. Thanks norm. Take care mate.
Thanks so much Ian, I was surprised actually as to how many people chose a sink line just because it sinks and thinking only of sink rate. Not many would mention speed of retrieve. For me this was all learnt on the rivers. Many times we would require a sink line to maintain a certain depth in the faster waters. So when I started fishing more on still waters, and retrieving faster which simulated the faster water, It was obvious that I needed a sink line. But I do find the slower sink rate the best. You have more options. Thanks for the comment Ian. Shaun.
Wow!what a fantastic video shaun. Definitely alot of thought goes into fishing than just throwing a line in.Your communication and diagrams makes it so much easier to understand.thanks for the mention.made my day.lol
I do actually see a lot of people on the water cast in and just let the wind fish it around. Which is fine if it picks fish up. But when it does not, the first thing they do is change the fly. I never see then checking the depths, by mending the line. Or even cast a different angle which fishes completely different. Check every thing first, or even move, as more often its not the fly. Unless you have a huge lure on and they fancy something small. Thanks for the comment mate. Catch up soon. Shaun.
Thanks for sharing your experience and knowledge around this subject. I found it very interesting and surprisingly I did lean things from it.. Well done 👍
Thanks so much Allan, Honestly I really did not think about this being such a tricky one to cover. For most of us we just do it. But to go through all the bits, and what if this and what about that. Blew me away mate. But its something to be looked at, and to be broken down, then put across in a video. But thanks again Allan. Take care mate. Shaun.
Shaun great informative video. I have just started fly fishing and only have a floating line and a fast intermediate, so this is helping me understanding how to be more effective and knowing where my fly might be in the water. I know you said it does your head in but it really great of you putting time and effort into producing it.
Yes mate I do remember you telling me, that you have not long got into Fly Fishing. As a good few following the channel. And this is why I am doing it. And there will be more to follow. I will work it a bit at a time. It is quite hard when you understand something so well, and you do things without thinking. Then to come down and explain it as best you can. It is so easy to leave bits out that we take for granted. But I am so happy that it works for you. It has already made it all worth while. Thanks mate. Shaun.
Well presented info Shaun. A lot to be said for a floating line with different sinking rate braided leader and then leader length, especially on small stillwater that are not deep.
Yes, and I know you know and I now know. You know. Will defo have a go at leaders and tippets soon. I think there is a lot of work to be done here. For a lot of people out there. Thanks for your support mate. Take care. Shaun.
So sorry just found this. Hate missing anything. No you was not wrong. The line is the Rio Aqua 11. Sink rate is 1.5 to 2. A really nice line. What I love about this sink rate is that you remain in a zone for a lot longer. Due to its slow sink rate. If its in your budget, its worth it. Sorry again. Shaun.
Cracking vid, very informative , i ve recently purchased snowbee floating braid, ive never used this before but im going to get out this weekend and give a it a shot after watching one of your previous tutorials on this technique . Keep up the good work!
I will be covering leaders and tippet soon Barry. I have been very happy with the snowbee braids for years. But I have started trying a few others lately so I can compare them all. The floating braid will come into its own shortly mate. But at the moment a lot of fish are still a bit deep. Thanks so much for your support Barry. Take care mate. Shaun.

Working through all your videos Shaun and this was interesting to listen and watch you cover this subject. I agree with you there are so so many permutations which each and every occasion present when fly fishing that it can become overwhelming with all the different things now made available to anglers. I personally have my go to methods that I trust and have had success with but then dip my toe into something new from time to time. You mentioned about braided leaders in one of your videos and how you like how they cut through the surface tension quickly..well this is my next thing to try which I haven’t experienced yet so I do remain open minded to new ideas and appreciate you sharing them with us. All the best and keep em coming 👍🏼 Tight lines 🎣
Its good to have your go to methods, but the more we have the better. Years ago I could go to most waters and guarantee a good days fishing. But over the last, may be 3 years there is a change in the fish. I could go out and basically fish a method for most of the day. No longer. The fish are up and down in the columns constantly. And the hatches we used to get. Now hatches apart from a few are small. The most noticeable to me is the buzzer hatch. Yes we still catch on the buzzer. But it nothing like it was. So when I am on the water, my set up is so that I can have the most variable. Two rods is a good way to go. As fish are up and down so quickly. The braids are worth trying. You get on with them you may not. I find them useful, as I only need one floating line. I can then switch the braid leader to suit. The fast sink is a bit aggressive. So I rarely use that one. The intermediate I use most. They are loop to loop so its a quick change if need be. Plus I don't have to have a load of lines, like sink tips and so on. As your going through the video's and you come across the early ones. Beware I had no idea how to do editing, cameras still baffle me. And I did not like speaking to the camera. Take care mate. Shaun.
@@shaunfishes101 thanks Shaun I’m taking all this in and will be added to my arsenal, thanks for taking the time with your reply😉. I think what your doing with your video content is refreshing and I think you come across behind the camera really well 👍🏼 All the best.
A difficult subject well covered in this video. Your experience and considering all the variables makes it hard to cover all the possibilities in just one video. So, for those looking for a overview type explanation and to help anglers to start thinking about how to target the fish and presentation you've done a good job here.
I will take that as a good pat on the back. Thanks John. And it was more than I thought. Funny we just go through the motions when we are on the water. But then trying to put this down and going through this so that those who are learning. Wow. But I will not give up on them now. I will be looking at leaders and tippets next. Star man John, Thanks Mate. Shaun.
Excellent content, Shaun, I’ve experimented as per your video and have found 1 rod on floating and another on midge tip, pretty much covers the bases for me 👍🏻. Tight lines mate
Honestly years ago we used to find fish would be in one zone of water for a lot longer. But things are changing. Fish are up and down in the columns all day long now. So if you want to make the most of it. Then have both rods set up ready makes sense. Mind bit of a bugger when you want to cover big waters and roving. Nice one Robert. Thanks for the comment. Take care. Shaun.
Very nice Shaun! This was something I've been learning last year. Fishing lakes and heavy stream s. I also started on experimenting with fluorocarbon leaders. To get those faster sinks for those more aggressive takes. Or when I use my half sink line to keep things in the strike zone more often. It's honestly something I just started seriously experimenting with. I often caring a floating, full sink, and half sink. Very fun for targeting different species. Take care Shaun your doing great man!
I think I have missed your last video, well not missed it, just not got it watched yet. But will, as I love your stuff. I actually pick some good editing up from you. Thanks. But your on it when you say experimenting. Its got to be done, or we go no where. Thanks for the comment mate. Shaun.
Excellent informative video Shaun. I'm sure that there has been a lot of thought and work put into this. Many thanks. When you get the time and energy maybe you could include a piece on the choice and effects of different leader lengths and the reasons why when using sinking lines. Take care mate :)
Oh Another challenge eh, I thought you liked me. But yes, I will be doing this mate. And yes it was difficult. I have said in earlier posts. We just do it. but when trying to explain and put into video form, and with all the variables. Wow. This could be a few videos worth. But I think it will be worth while for many. Take care mate. We were down the road from there last week. We went to Woolaston. Loved it. We will be back to Big Well soon. Was hoping this month as after this month we are so busy. We have a lot of fishing in April with a few friendly comps with some very popular Influencers. And we have a whole week at Garnfrewd, hopefully on the Buzzers. We do have very clear water at Hayscastle, much the same as Bigwell. However to capture lines on camera under water is so difficult and almost impossible. You would get a brief shot of the line then it would be gone. Great to hear from you. And we will meet up soon. Thanks for the comment Gazla.

@@9gazla9 It was Dai and myself. And we both loved it. Dai did struggle a bit. The weather was a bit crap. A lot of every one that was fishing did struggle on the day. But I was lucky on the day. Most fish came to the di2 and dark lure. Small steady draw retrieve then a little pause. Did loose a heavy fish. But we have to go back there some time as well now as Justin wants to do it.
@@9gazla9 Just been checking Sandford out. Seems like you have to abide by some rules. I am fine with the respect the fish bit. But on the reviews a good few people have big problems with the staff. It seems you are told where to fish, and are unable to roam. And need permission to move to another pontoon. Is all this true.
Hi Chris thanks so much, but not all credit to me. As I have been working with Justin we have been Ironing out a lot of things fishing. We do disagree a few things, but we get it sorted one way or another. Its having an open mind and understanding the water world. Forget the fish we will never work them out. But if we get close to a better presentation we will be OK. This again is all down to what you are fishing, how long the tippet is, and how fast the retrieve. On the floater. But the sink line if the pattern is unweighted. Like said in the video, will fish in line to the sink line. Which is a very good presentation. Your going to have to wait for the video that will cover this mate. As it might be a bit better explained. Thanks for the comment Chris. Shaun.
Thanks Chad, Honestly it was quite difficult. I did not really think about it much. But once I started going through it. Shit there are so many scenarios, I found myself getting lost in it all. And the funny thing is when we are fishing we just do it without thinking. Thanks for the comment Chad. Take care mate. Shaun.
How do you get your line to stay straight, mine seem to get bends, so have to put round a branch and stretch it. A guru friend that taught my brother to fish. He made us Blok rods stiff tip. He said best line that works well and does not make noise as much as my Greys float line did, he said use Wytchwood rocket float line, works really well
Give you an example Martin. We have two Wolf TT lines here, and I can tell you they are totally different. One has memory problems thee other none. So if you have this company that can't get every line spot on, then it does make me think sometimes we are lucky to get a good line. But if I have a line with bad memory I ditch it straight away. My lines look better for two reasons. One, I always keep good contact with a very slow retrieve. Two, the camera tells lies. Oh the noise you get from the line is supposed to be an added feature to the line. To help it cast better and fish better. Some of the top lines have this. Thanks for the comment Martin. Shaun.

Shaun, thanks. That has help me quite a lot. I have spent most of my life course and carp fishing. But I have found myself recently buying a cheep fly rod and reel. Having caught the bug!! I was wondering if you could recommend a decent 10' rod, reel, and floating line ? Keep up the good work; I'm learning loads.
You will have to give me idea on your budget. But in order of importance. Line, rod then reel. For me a reel when fishing on most still waters for average size fish is just a line holder. But once you get that better fish you need a better drag system. And I am sure you understand that part. Starting out a rod weather its 9' or 10' is better being a mid tip action. A good few of the better rods are mainly tip action. Great rods once you got your casting to a standard. The line is a mind field. But there is some great budget lines worth a look at. And don't ever think bye spending more money on a line that its going to be better. A lot of the top end lines are specific. I will be trying a budget line soon. It was a recommend. Talk soon. Shaun.
@@kayakingcapers2291 OK give me a bit of time. As said will be trying this new line soon. Hopefully its good. BC who has made a comment on here recommended it. He has just purchased his and says its great. I will ask some of the boys about some of there rods. As they have some budget rods.

Outstanding video, Shaun. Why? I think I have watched all your videos, and I have wondered why you always seemed to limit yourself to a floating line and to display an obsession about the seemingly minute details of each line's peculiarities. I don't recall ever seeing you fishing an intermediate, or a midge tip or the like. Pardon me, but, as successful as you are at catching well on those well stocked waters, your methods, in my ignorance, seemed sort of simple and one dimensional. However, after watching this video, I am amazed at the subtlety and complexity of your techniques. The gurus in my corner of the world often insist that a floating line is useful only for fishing dries or hanging a midge under the bung. They NEVER should be used to retrieve a fly! It is said that the clear intermediate and sink tip are the tools of successful anglers. But you regularly demonstrate an artistry with the floater that demands attention and encourages emulation. I look forward to your future videos with eagerness and, particularly, your future comments on leaders and tippets.
This comment is Amazing. You have hit on so many points. It is very late at the moment, like gone 12pm. I am so keen to reply, but I am so slow on this computer. I will get back to you tomorrow evening. Oh and thank you so much. Shaun.
I am honoured that you watch the videos. And I will be making a point about this shortly. But for me the line is the most important tool for fly fishing. It is the one thing that gives you contact to your pattern and can present it just as you need too. As I have said in the video, the floating line can present a fly dead slow at most levels and you can incorporate a steady retrieve and maintain a certain level. This is important to present a natural pattern. The sink line for me is more for presenting something faster. When I used to fish the rivers I would spend more time on sink lines. This was mainly due to the speed of the river and the angle of presentation. But there is a big difference presenting a fly on a river. I do use a Di 2 a good bit and have a few videos fishing it. like my last video. It is a great line for presenting a small nymph at pace. A midge tip I will never own. What I use is the tapered braid leader, in float, Intermediate and slow sink. This means I only require one good floating line. And this is so important to me, as I do not want to be bogged down with loads of kit. Unlike most of the anglers out there now seem to take every thing including the kitchen sink. If these people was to do some real fishing instead of picking a spot and set up camp all day. I am sure they would try and loose some crap. Rant over for now. We like to move with ease around the water. Which means less kit and net on back. This was born from fishing most of our lives on the rivers. Now you are spot on about this country and its trout lakes. They are massively over stocked. And most people understand that a stock fish will eat anything that moves. Yes it can be good fun at times and its great for anybody starting out. But there are so many out there that build channels promoting how good they are. And people tying flies that only a stock fish would look at. Its a joke. Then you see them trying to cast. Its a hard watch. But Hayscastle our local is so different. We only stock about every third week with about 40 fish. Then the fish are left in peace for three days to settle in. Like no fishing allowed. For every body that fishes this water is more than happy with this set up. It means we can learn to catch resident fish. In the summer months the fish establish very quickly, maybe around two to three days due to the amount of food we have in this lake. The winter months this can be considerably longer. My self and a few of the boys help out to look after the lake. And we are very aware of how to maintain a healthy lake, and have happy fish. This lake is not easy fishing. Yes we have the odd day when it all comes together and you can have a blinder. There are a good few of my friends that would fish here, but they find it to difficult. So they only try it once in a while for a challenge. I have had a few UA-cam channels ask about it. But once they find out about the challenge. You may have guessed. They don't turn up. But this water is the closest thing we know to the real thing. We would all go back to the rivers. But sadly our rivers are in such decline, and will never get fixed. Oh before I forget. The reason for watching the videos. How many people do you notice fishing it. Why so few. Because they struggle. There ain't enough stockies in there. I am so sorry if I have got a bit carried away. Have just noticed how long this is. Sorry. Again thank you for your comment. Shaun.
Oh heck this is a difficult one. OK first off, I have not used them all. Have tried loads. But if its in terms of a manufacture then it would have to be Rio. Only because between the boys and myself we have more Rio than any other line. But not saying they have the best of every thing. I think this would be a very difficult one for anybody to answer. As I could almost definitely say nobody has fished all lines to make a fare recommend.
Hi Shaun, going by the video title I thought you would be recommending a fly line ! What in your opinion is the best floating line for a 10’ #7 rod. Cheers 👍🐟
Yes sorry mate, to be honest with you I am messing around with the algarrythem. But its close as in the floating line is probably the best and most sold line in the world. You have asked the billion dollar question. I have never used all the lines on the market and I am trying. So I may get there one day. First of all, we all cast differently and even different rods make a huge difference. I have a scientific Infinity 7#. on my Airflow Stick Two, it is shit. On my Loomis fine. And it depends on what your mainly fishing. I have found a few lines which are lower budget. Trout Fly lines, they only do Float and Intermediate. They were £20 ish with backing. Good for about 70' to 80' cast. They struggle after that. Barrio is good but I think the price has gone up now. Hardy CRS good line. Then there is a few Rio's. Single spey cast. Latest one has the new slick cast on it. To be honest it difficult. But if I ever find the perfect line you will definitely hear about it. Sorry I can't help much and sorry for the confusion Lavi. Shaun.

Oh, you’ve sold me the idea of getting the rede river floater for starters! Cheers. Jonathan
We love the wilds of the hills and those wild browns. I think we will be going back on the Rare Black Finn again. And a few other lakes around north wales. Where are you based Jonathon.

Great break down of sinking line and their purpose. Yeah, good on you for taking that beast by the horns! Cheers!
Good informative video 👍👍👌
Yes mate I do remember you telling me, that you have not long got into Fly Fishing. As a good few following the channel. And this is why I am doing it. And there will be more to follow.

All the best and keep em coming 👍🏼
Tight lines 🎣

Shaun.

Brilliant that Shaun, absolutely loved it , would like to know the difference how the fly looks been pulled along or from above 👍👍👍

Talk soon. Shaun.
Thanks for taking the time to reply to me. My budget is £200, if needed, I could go a bit higher. Say to £250

Shaun.
Which fly lines manufacturers do you recommend
Shaun.

The variables in parted by different density and profiles of fly lines are massive. That is before wind direction/strength, retrieve types/speed/variations.
