Winter Fly Fishing Rainbow Trout. And the deadly Hays b&b.
Last week we fished a pattern that turned out so successful we had to return and try again. But this time we decided to fish three patterns. One of which is the Hays b&b. The Hays b&b is new to the fly fishing world. The way in which it is tied makes it a great fish catcher. And becoming a pattern fished around the world with great success.

Our annual trip to Garnffrwd this year was so different to previous years. The conditions was good, but the fishing was difficult. For us this is ideal. We can find out more about our patterns and our knowledge to catch these fish. This was a bit like going back in time, when one or two fish was acceptable. A very rewarding time on the water. But again one pattern stood out. The Hays B/B. This ...

    Would you use apps on a floating line olive patterns work well even in winter

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101 День тому

      Most definitely would. I will use any pattern on any method. No rules on this channel. Actually keep an eye out for a coming video. We are fishing with one of our apps. An apps with a slight difference. As you asked, fishing the traditional app is limited. This is why we have added weight, as in a 4mm bead. As every body owns a floating line it made sense. This pattern catches a lot of fish. Don't ever be restricted by what anybody says how too. Just try things, anything can work one day. Then hopefully you won't be missing out. Good eh. Take care. Shaun.

      You know me so well. Wishing me a happy xmas knowing how often I post a video. But that was then. I actually have a few on the go. The Hays came second on the water today. To an Orange beaded apps sort of thing. Much the same as our red one. Lost count how many, but it was bloody good fun. And it was stocked over three weeks ago. This is very good news. As this time last year the fish just did not respond quite the same. This was just like the old autumn days. The conditions was unreal. Winds to 70/80 mph. A few of the boys turned up, but there fish count was low, due to there casting. They do struggle a bit. So they are unable to fish waters that I can. There will be a video of this. Thanks for all your support. 2025 wont start as I would like. I hope to be nearing the end of my problems early 25. But after that. Hey Ho Hear We Go. Thanks again. Take care mate. Shaun.

      The pattern has no name and we was still working with it at the time. We have over the last 9 months come up with the finished nymph. During this time has caught a lot of fish. It looks very much the same, but has a dubbed thorax. At the moment we just call it the olive nymph. You can see it in our latest video. Along with another great pattern the Hays b&b which catches a lot of fish. And becoming very popular. We will get some fly tying videos out over the months following. Thanks for the comment. Shaun.

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101 3 дні тому

      We often know what could be working. And the Hays b&b is very consistent. But if we did that we would soon get bored and learn nothing. It may be hard to understand, but we do enjoy the challenges of fishing. Guaranteed even tomorrow when a few of us meet at the cabin of Hays, there will be a mix of challenges. I think for us now its who is going to have the wackiest challenge. But can it be achieved. This to us is more fun. We used to have challenges using Steve's flies. But not so much now as he has become much better at fly tying. We have failed in finding a supplier for our flies. There are plenty out there. But we need to make sure that the demand and quality can be assured. This is difficult. If you know of anybody that can sort this for you. There is tying instructions on the channel. Sorry Gareth. Shaun.

      What the boys are loving about it, and what I was doing in this video. How easy it is to cast due to the lighter weight. I had a 20' tippet on. This pattern is quite consistent. And this only builds confidence. So pleased you have this pattern. Its a shame so many have not the opportunity, as we can not get any body to do them for us. And I am certainly not getting into that myself. Great hearing from you. Take care mate. Shaun.

      Simple. Avoid the wind till you get a bit more casting skills. Honestly casting in the winds that Justin and myself do requires spot on timing. The rod and line are specific. Most people would not want to spend the money for just this. But we spend a good bit of time in these sorts of conditions. But what is hard to believe is that a bigger line is easier to cast than a short line. You get more energy in the long line. Honestly, Practice mate. Take care. Shaun.

    • @brianr9529
      @brianr9529 4 дні тому

      A cheap rod to get you started with s medium or slow action, greys gr80 maybe. Weight forward line (wf7) as long as the weight of the line matches the rod or is one size heavier. Ive tried many many lines and the best I've used are the rede river long haul mark 2 and the maxcatch perception lines, both under 30 pounds and will fly out the rod easily with 2 or 3 casts. Both have a head length under 40 feet, 10lb leader 10 or 12 feet long and 1 fly to start with. Yiu don't need to cast far, less splashing on the water is more important and keep moving round the water and have the wind at you back, if you're right handed keep the wind comin from your left.

    • @MichaelHead-x4d
      @MichaelHead-x4d 4 дні тому

      Thanks guys,Brian, I've just got the rede river long haul thanks to Shaun's video, I contacted rede river and the recommended I stick with a 6 weight on my 6 weight rod? It just still felt underguned? So even though it's a shooting head 'style' line would you go 8 weight on a 7? The slightest headwind and I might as well start fishing the sheep behind me 😂😂

    • @brianr9529
      @brianr9529 4 дні тому

      @@MichaelHead-x4dI've used a heavier line size before and it's fine, let's you feel the rod load better. Davie downie does this and he's fished for Scotland I'm sure. If you use the same rated line for your rod it will just take a bit of time to get the timing right on your back and forward casts. You don't need to cast far, 40 feet is enough, fish will swim under your rod allday. If it's windy lift off as much line as you can(facing into the wind) and let it go with your rod pointing down at the water. Just one cast. Doesn't matter if it's far as long as it doesn't tangle. Either that turn to your right and cast along the bank so the winds blowing onto your left.

      A method for the moment it turned out. I have since fished it twice on two different waters. Apart from a few bumps it was a fail. OK conditions may have played a part. But it goes to show, seeing a method may work one day but it is far from a guarantee. Its fishing. Thanks for your comment and support Cameron. Take care mate. Shaun.

      Don't bother trying mate. Or you could, and on the day it might work. Done it twice more on two different waters and it failed. Its just one of those patterns or methods that works at the time. But it goes to show try anything. And what ever we tell you may not work for you on the day. But its good to take in, as one day you may think, try that. Great to hear from you Robin. Thanks for the comment. Shaun.

    Hi Shaun, I had one rainbow on Farmoor yesterday on a black mamba, G Wilson pattern. For the rest of the day I tried everything in the fly box and ignored emerges, I wonder, what if 🙂. Thanks again great video. Dermot

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101 8 днів тому

      Heck how many what if's I think at the end of a day. But I do try a lot more things than most. Mainly out side the box. But that's the reality of fishing for you. Every day different. Like in this video, had I not had that fish chase to trigger me to try things. Who knows. I certainly would have not had so many. Oh and while we are on this. The method has failed on two different waters, different days. Very typical of most patterns and methods. I'm sure the Black Mamba will be sorting a few fish over the coming months. Gareth has a great pattern there. Thanks for the comment. Take care. Shaun.

      Its amazing what you forget when its good. I would not mind good for a bit longer. As I have told most already the method did not last. Fished it on two occasions, different waters and it failed. Which I am sure you will see in later videos. So what next. Its good to mix it up a bit on the waters, as not many patterns and methods are that successful. Unless we are on stockies. Thanks for the comment Stevie. Take care mate. Shaun.

    Awesome video mate.. Well enjoyed that... I bloody blanked at harpsdale yesterday... A BLANK!!! ZUT ALORS!! 😮.. that rarely ever happens to me... I was buzzering it... Bunging it.. Midge tipping it.. Drying it.. #18s.. And not a bloody sausage.. I went home and got pissed instead 😂 😂 😂 Aaaw mate I hate blanking.. 5 hrs of nothing.. On the plus side though the session cost me nowt so at least that's something.. Our place is screaming for fresh fish... We're still getting June's last stock... So unfortunately no video from me this week... Hope your doing well mate Ross 🍻

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101 8 днів тому

      A blank means NO fish, are you sure you got that. If you do, it means you are human. Shit even Justin has blanked. OK not much, but he has, and so have most of us. June since last stock is unreal. And you still catch on such variation. Would love some of that stock down here. Bet its starting to get bloody cold up there with you. I'm finding a bit of space at moment. Putting all shit to one side for a break. So getting a bit of time for the channel. Thanks for the comment Ross, Take it easy mate. Shaun.

I'm wanting to make another video for the pube but that depends if I catch or not 😂.. It's gonna be 3 degrees tops tomorrow so I'm thinking bung or midge tip and fish sloooooow

    Hi Shaun good video again. A have fished the suspender buzzer that way for long time now. Especially as the washing line set up. Unbelievable amount you get on suspender under surface. It seems get them going and tend get a lot on the nymph and buzzers aswell fishing it that way.

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101 8 днів тому

      I never seem to get the same response with the washing line. But will try again. Nymphs and buzzers yes. Fished this method on two other trips, different waters. Nothing or as good as nothing. Goes to show. a method and pattern for the day. Not consistent. Thanks for the comment William. Take care mate. Shaun.

    Hi Shaun, another practical and honest video, will have to get my lot down for another visit and tie up some of those buzzers, stay well butty.

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101 8 днів тому

      Don't bother with those buzzers mate. Used them on two other occasions on different waters and they failed. OK conditions may not have been as per. But there are plenty of patterns to fish static. It was more the method I was enjoying most. Mind there might be something there worth looking at. Take care Mike. Shaun.

    Interesting variation on the technique. Under those weather/light conditions seeing the white suspender would be difficult. Have you considered colouring the top quarter inch of the suspender with some flouro colours e.g. Pink, yellow or orange? We all see slight differences in colour shades and have a greater sensitivity/preference. There some excellent Sharpie pen permanent colours to choose from

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101 8 днів тому

      No need to worry about this John. Fished this pattern and method on two different waters since. And it failed. Its another one of those patterns and methods that works on the day. Pity, as it was great fun. I will work with the idea mind, as I think there is something there. And when it comes to sitting it on the top waiting. Well I am not as interested. As there are a lot of patterns we can use to do this. Thanks for the tip mind. Take care and thanks John. Shaun.

      We spend a good bit of time trying things. As you would guess it does not always work to plan. But its great fun trying. I would hate to do the same thing over and over. I think one of the ones I remember most is the one foot tippet. Second attempt. Should do that again some time as back then I was not as good at editing. So could be a lot better. Thank you Martin. For watching and most of all the time to comment. Means a lot. Take care. Shaun.

    I have success with this with a bibio coloured pattern I swing and summer, and similar with a foam daddy in autumn. Worth trying a NZ style small buzzer about 6 inches to a foot under the daddy as well...

    • @shaunfishes101
      @shaunfishes101 8 днів тому

      Ye Bibio, Daddies and Dabblers are all good for surface sport. But what I found on the day is that when they chased, they would take when then left static. I have a feeling this could be more down to its size. Any way two trips following it has failed. Not completely. But a fail. catch up soon mate. Shaun.

Nine months on and I am slowly getting my head together. Few more months and I will know more about where I will be. No illness. A split. I will get more time to do the things I would rather do one day. Like following your channel and others I enjoy. At the moment any time I have spare is sat editing for the channel.
