Tallinn has the best survived authentic medieval old town in Europe and it wasn`t destroyed during the WW2 like partly in Riga. Helsinki has nothing like Tallin or Riga if we are talking medieval old towns. Helsinki is about 400 years younger than Riga & Tallinn. What is common to those cities that they all 3 have been part also of Sweedish Empire some period of time when actually Riga, not Stockholm was the biggest city of the Swedish Empire in the 16th 17th century partly. Sweden's King Gustavus Vasa founded Helsinki on the mouth of Vantaanjoki River in 1550 to compete with Tallinn for Baltic Sea trade. The town grew slowly, however, and the centre of Helsinki was moved to its current location in the 1600s.
Another fantastic video, David! You always give us a real feel of the city you’re in! Much appreciate your down to earth view and reflections on the places you visit.
Very cool! I love the small towns, they are so clean and well persevered. I enjoy the history part as well. Interesting that you only drink cold drinks, even in really cold weather. Well as long as you’re drinking cafecito that’s fine by me! 😆
Beautiful city, David. Pretty darn cold but l would dare roam around its streets, the music went well with the mood of Tallinn. Have a merry Christmas and a great coming new year.
@@davidostrowski679 Thank you! It's been a couple weeks since it snowed here. The last couple days have been about 20°c and sunny, very nice. Yes, I do miss CDMX a lot, it was the highlight of this year and it seems like I picked a good time to go considering how much worse things have become in the US. I will be sending in my visa application for Spain in just a few weeks which has helped me get through the last couple months of not traveling.
Hello my friend, hubby and I just watched this and we loved it. I love that you go adventuring about all those old grey abandoned relics of an era and not coming to us from an all inclusive resort on the Riveria Maya (wink). Boy, the mercados here in Mexico could learn a thing or two about cleanliness from that stunning mercado in Riga, and the former KGB headquarters, what can you say. Why or why do people treat their fellow brothers in such atrocious manners, even in this day and age? Safe travels and these vids are becoming more polished all the time. Happy New Year!!
Susan! Riviera what? LOL. Hope you had a great Xmas! Thanks for the polished comment, thank the lord my phone smashed in Cancun meaning I could get a new one! Riga and Tallinn were gorgeous, two of my favourites! I'm taking a break after the next travel one (from Luxembourg) but will be back, don't fret!
Hi, David... Your absolute best video that's not in Mexico! I'm sold that I must visit Tallinn! I loved the orthodox church, the abandoned Soviet building, and the Christmas market! All brilliant! I've visited all regions of Lithuania, have no interest in Latvia, but Tallinn really appeals. Tallinn reminds me of Vilnius more than Riga, but the Baltic capitals are individually unique. I think Tallinn and Vilnius are more happening and hip than Riga. Lithuanians are considered the most garrulous and engaging over the Latvians or Estonians... can't wait for your visit in 2021 to Vilnius (and Trakai Castle on Lake Galve).
Thanks Markas! Riga does indeed have a slightly more gritty feel! I've been reading about the Estonia digital nomad visa... there could be more Estonia coming!
A lovely city...and fond memories- hello Sirri if you`re viewing this- anyway, i had a great train trip on an old soviet era train( certainly the carriages were) from Tallinn to Narva ,great chat with a young Russian student on his way to connect to get to SPB,, great times and memories-wont mention Maire lol Happy new year David

moving to tallinn this month for the next phase of my life. be my guest the next time you're around, we'd be happy to host you. im at Kalamaja :), cheers!
