- Something new to this channel as I have recently gotten into horn collecting, figured this would be a great start for what is to come. Here are many various recordings of a former Amtrak square tag K5LA, believed to be off a P42DC. Serial # 13103 dates it around 1996, the grey paint and cones are not original. The first half of audio clips were from my setup, and the rest ran on another friend’s setup. Enjoy

Rumor has it that particular run was at a speed with 3 digits…
@@TrainShackProductions1790 Based on my calculations, it is! On the approach, the #1 bell was around 367.5 Hz. On the leave, it was around 280 Hz. Averaging these two notes gives a flat E (323.75 Hz), the emitted frequency of the #1 here. If we calculate the velocity using the emitted frequency and the approaching frequency, the car was going around 103 mph.
What a beautiful K5LA! These early 90’s Square Tag K5LA’s from Amtrak’s Genesis fleet were definitely the best Amtrak’s had so far in my opinion. Even better than the F40 80’s casts!
Sqauretags were mid 90s 1995-1997, Tagless NF was 1990-1994. But agree the 90s cast KS whistles are hard to beat!

What does the actual “square tag” refer to? I paused at 3:50 to look at the back but I am not exactly sure what I’m looking for, unless of course I am not looking in the right spot to begin with😅Sorry for being a newbie
The Squaretag is in reference to the serial tag on the horns manifold, being that it's a square stamp. Youll have to look overtop of the horn to see the actual tag. Pause the video at 0:39 and you'll see the tag.
