I was on the USS Nimitz. During drills we simulated flooding both engine and reactor rooms, about 2/3 of the lower half. It still did not reach the hanger bay. With so many water tight compartments you may be able to stop one but I don’t think one could be sunk.

I served on a Nimitz-Class Carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in 1993. My last year in the Navy.
JSS 66, I served in the USS Kittyhawk in the 90's (Conventional/Non-Nuclear Powered Aircraft Carrier), then I was Re-Assigned to The USS Nimitz then again was Re-Assigned to USS Lake Champlain (Aegis Cruiser), then I got stuck in shore Duties in Yokosuka, Japan Naval Base, after 4 years I got into trouble there because I got into a fight with an asshole officers then I got assigned in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii and I boarded another Ship there to get Assigned on another Task Force which is the Amphibious Assault Ship. After 3 years, I was Re-Assigned again on a God damn shore Duties in San Diego, CA (Man I hate shore Duties! I'd rather get on a ship!)

Old but gold. Can you imagine what is like to have a close to 50 years ship which is only matched by its successor and not by its enemies. The Nimitz-class carrier is still relevant today and I don't see a reason to take it out of service if there are not enough Ford-class. Though I believe that the Ford will save money in the future. And ofc it looks like the Ford is better overall but still that nimitz is amazing
I was stationed on the USS Nimitz with VF-41, The World Famous "Black Aces" F-14 Tomcats during it's first shake down cruises and subsequent deployments until being discharged in the late 1970's. The ship was home to 110 various swing and fixed wing jets and rotor powered aircraft with a crew of 5000 airmen and sailors. We transitioned from F-4N Phantom to F-14A&B Tomcat aircraft during our CAG (Carrier Air Group) build up. At the time it was the world's largest warship and boasted being able to withstand any attack other than a direct hit from a nuclear weapon. I can tell you she is an awesome weapon and has fought well during her tenure. Long may she sail...

With the many many many years of experience (naval logistics, landing and take offs) with aircraft carriers, America is by far, hands down, the ONLY country, on planet earth, with no adversaries that can or will ever match or achieve a navy of this magnitude, precision, ability and POWER. Russia has ONE carrier and its on fire Bah ha ha ha, china is trying to build a small fleet of carriers but all the land based training can not compare to landing on a bobbing flat top and at night? I mean, an aircraft carrier can carry up to 130 air craft, all the munitions needed to defend itself, arm those aircraft, and carry out missions, OH and make necessary repairs and tend to most medical emergencies on board!!!.

Dude, I am an American and definitely not a hater. But I really worry about our carriers. Those frigate and destroyer screens, and our combat air patrol, protect the carrier from being attacked by other vessels, which can't even get close to the carrier, and that's great. But we are in the age of hypersonic anti-ship missiles which drop out of the sky on ballistic trajectories. It only cost a couple of millions to make a good missile, and 10s of BILLIONS to make a carrier. The Chinese and Russians each have many, many thousands of missiles. Their carrier tech is nowhere close to ours, but their missile tech is scary good. I'm in serious doubt that if war breaks out, our carriers won't become top priority targets. Are they magnificent? Hell yes. But 1 or 2 hits from a hyper velocity missile and any carrier is done. In a big shooting war, tactical nukes will probably be used, and even a miss from a nuclear tipped missile would easily take out one of our carriers. We have 11 carriers, each representing a HUGE investment of our military budget. I feel like that's too many eggs in each big basket though. Anyway that's why I worry. Do you think our carriers are missile proof?

People have know idea how powerful the US Navy really is and what would be needed to destroy a carrier battle group. No country in the world has the power projection ability to attack a carrier group without losing everything it has. One carrier wing is stronger than most airforces.

Actually, there are missiles out there designed to take down a carrier, which would take down the strike group (mainly because the other ships in the battle group are essentially bullet sponges for the carrier). Although there are anti missile counter measures (such as the phalanx and the like) there are ways to disable battle groups than destroying them all.
Carriers have always amazed me. My biggest fear would be these low flying misses like the Chinese YJ-8 class or a French exorcet. I’ve seen documentaries from the Falkland wars of what those missiles did to a couple British ships and how deadly it was for the crew to be trapped in the burning ship after one of those goes off. Truly scary.

The carriers should be optimized by making the tower go up and down by teeth-rails and locks, so that big airplanes, espacially the stealth-fighter could start and land.
Even ships could be then able to be tranported by elevators making an aircraft-carrier much more efficient. - The tower is the problem. And when view is important, a helicopter being linked with the down-turned tower could replace it, being the mobile tower.

I wouldn’t be atall surprised to see a new naval strategy employed against modern countries that have modern subs if actual war broke out.

borris fatboy - I have some respect for Russians, following the fall of communism life has undoubtably been hard for it’s citizens... That said, the Russian leadership is still very corrupt and the military is vastly under funded... If they had the economic might of the USA, then it could be another story. But for now i’d say the ’Red Fear’ of the cold war days is pretty much a moot point now. Anyone who says otherwise must first answer why Russia loves a proxy war and never a direct engagement.

This video summarizes a lot of public information about carriers, and carrier groups. Yes, the U.S. fleet of carriers is far and away the most powerful fleet of carriers in the world. The Soviets, China, and the UK each have only a couple of carriers, and none of them is as large or as advanced as any of the U.S. carriers. However, the video never goes into why these carriers are "unstoppable". The next area where the U.S. may have to deploy its carriers is the Yellow Sea. By all accounts, China has built and stationed thousands of anti-ship missiles all around this area, along with man-made islands that all have airfields and missile batteries sprinkled throughout, in what they call "unsinkable carriers" (also immobile carriers, since islands can't move). But my question is what can our carriers do if they are each attacked by 3 or 4 dozen missiles, some of which are hypersonic and attack from a ballistic trajectory, dropping out of the sky. Can our carriers CWIS close-in anti-air defenses really fend off all attacking missiles? All it takes is one or two missile strikes and that carrier will be out of commission for a long time. Carriers and carrier groups are great when functioning as intending, projecting our U.S. air power to all parts of the world. But they cost so much each that we are putting many, many critical eggs into each of these carrier baskets. Formidable? They sure are. But unstoppable? I don't think so. The frigate and destroyer screens can protect the carriers against other vessels from getting close enough to attack a carrier. But these days there are a lot of missiles in the world, and I don't see how we can keep these carriers safe in a shooting war.
The ships protecting the Carriers have a very limited number of anti-air missiles. Once they are expended, they, and the Carrier are sitting ducks.
I wish no one would say things like "It's Unstoppable." Remember the "Unsinkable" Titanic? There were would-be passengers who declined to board her over the fear of God for such hubris. They were rewarded with their lives.

I served 4 1/2 years in the Reactor Department on Nimitz. Unless you served on one you have no idea what life is like onboard. It was an honor to serve on one. We run the sun.

Ypu can't keep refurbishing indefinitely. Most carriers are over 2 decades old. And will go on for a total of 5 decades at least.
But physics doesn't change, so once the superstructure shows signs of metal fatigue refurb cost and downtime will go up. Diminishing returns and lack of upgradable systems.

The Battleships became obsolete as soon as aircraft carriers became practical. Drones are now quickly making the aircraft carriers obsolete but the U.S. will continue to build them regardless.

Astonishing. I look at the attack on Pearl Harbor then Midway both by the Japanese fleet and the level of US intelligence and communication, which was faulty at many times have lead to a greater understanding of proper identification of the enemy and the direct communication to the proper US vessel, good video, nice to see..
I most sincerely hope that those here who believe our carriers are unsinkable are proven correct. I have my doubts about that, mainly due to the development of hypersonic missiles. What could we do if, for example, four hypersonic missiles were launched simultaneously at a carrier? Do we really have the tech to defend against that? Of course, the Navy has some aces up its sleeve which cannot be disclosed to the public. But the hypersonic is such a recent development, I wonder....and worry for our guys out there.
The fleet has enough electronic jamming capabilities to disorient the fish swimming underneath.
