his cfp semifinal game against texas was so good, i was finally ready to buy in after 2 years of fun but inconsistent play, and then it all crashed right back down in the natty
the physical tools are enticing, but there's only so much theoretical upside a 6th year senior pushing 24 can have, especially one that benefitted from a great surrounding situation in college. i'm not sure how fixable his flaws are at this stage. worth a day 2 dart throw if he's not going to be forced to start right away, but the top 15 talk feels about as unfounded as the short-lived hendon hooker hype from last year

Penix changed his throwing motion at his pro day to a 3/4 delivery and he was hitting receivers in stride on all of his throws to various levels. There are throws of his in the Texas game where he feathers the ball to his receivers.

Your analysis proves that you have not seen all tapes. Top in throw aways. Lowest sack rate sacks, his pressure rate is one of the tops in CFP. Your analysis leads to believe that Penix’s consequences would be high in negative yardage plays (taking sacks and interceptions) But opposite is not true. He led his team for the last two years (Washington) team to a 25-3 record. Almost all wins came through Penix.

I do agree with the flaws he has and your analysis in general, i do think the comp is highkey disrespect though 😭 . I have him to the raiders at 10 for the same reason i have nix at 19 to the broncos (they need qbs, they’re really good relative fits with nix being pretty much perfect, they fit the mentality of the team, they want to go qbs and i cant think of anywhere else where theyll go) and his impressive combine performance which had scouts gassed. i did have him mocked to the falcons in round 3 because i do think he would be best as a backup. Yikes, the level of critique in this room. I certainly see and hear what you're talking about, however, I see the same lapses of consistency from other QBs in various game situations as well. So not sure I can fully base a decision of not selecting this QB based on a limited viewing, and only of, mostly, his faults game-tape.
Aside from that, interesting points. I will say that he can gun that ball. Is he a week 1 starter? Maybe not. I would prefer to give all these QB's a year to digest a playbook.
Question; is there a reason you have "Bet on games" in the middle of your video? Are you promoting gambling?

There are several fallacies in your video. Part of analysis is projection. That’s not just what you see, but what you think a person can do.
There was too much focus on what went wrong and not enough talk about what went right. That’s bias.
Medical people said Penix was fully healthy. He got hurt 4 years at Indiana, but stayed healthy 2 years in Washington.
Penix ran a lot at Indiana. He’s more than capable of making plays with his feet. You said he ran a 4.6 at pro day. There were many people who said he ran in the 4.4’s and 4.5’s.
You gave almost all the credit to Penix’s play to the receivers and OL that also played in 2021 when Washington had a horrible offense. You clearly have an agenda.
Penix throws balls he knows his receivers will get that won’t be intercepted. Joel Klatt likes to talk about how he throws balls away from the defense that only his guys can get. He has touch on balls downfield. Klatt also says he throws 50/50 balls that are better than 50% for his guy.
No, he didn’t dump balls off much. Maybe Grubb and Deboer didn’t want him, too. It’s easy for us to hope and say he should, but we don’t know what he was told without talking to the coaches.
My personal feeling is he didn’t take easy stuff as much because he was confident he could complete deep balls. Maybe Deboer and Grubb let him go for it. The NFL will want him to take a step back and he can do it. He can do the hard stuff and can definitely do the easier throws.
Most of Penix’s INT’s came on plays where people fell down or their was confusion on the route. I saw a tipped ball or 2 for an INT and one was because of a 6’7” LB downfield. Another one was a defender interfering with the receiver and not getting called for it. There were a few bad throw INT’s over 2 years.
Penix balls that sail are over everyone’s heads!
Part of being a QB is winning. Penix was 25-3 at Washington and 12-5 as a starter at Indiana, where very few win.
I get critiques of how he threw the balls, but that can be coached. He already has the velocity and arm strength.

Other analysts who know what routes are & what they are called have pointed out how his receivers don't stick to the routes. So it's either them or coaching, but Penix *is throwing* to where they are supposed to be. So a lot of what appears to be inaccuracy on his part is actually not.
This happens a lot: most people can't see it. Sometimes they don't want to. The Bears & their HC pretty much revealed that they called for Justin Fields for instance to not pass to certain receivers on certain plays & have made it Very Clear that they refuse to work _with_ him & instead pull crap that doesn't work. But the majority of fans "understood this" to be signs that he couldn't read defenses.
Quite the opposite. Having to hesitate mid-any-play to read a jersey number, remember if it's a receiver you're allowed to throw to on this play or not *then decide* to pass or not _while scrambling_ requires MORE reading, not less. & no other QB in the NFL has ever had to do that.

Any chance you could do an Aiden O'Connel video? I feel like he's underrated, I have a really hard time believing that Minshew is going to outcompete him (remember the former Chargers GM is there making free agent decisions), and I thought he showed some promise in his anticipation and ball placement. Also, remember the team convinced the coach to bench Garoppolo for him, so it's not just me.

    • @pbfg
      @pbfg  7 місяців тому

I don't think AOC is a starter either - heavy Gardner Minshew vibes. He'll have a long, lucrative career as a backup.

    • @joshspeyer2522
      @joshspeyer2522 7 місяців тому

@@pbfg Are you saying that because of the narrative or bec of how AOC plays? I don't see any narrative other than that from the act of Telesco signing Minshew, and in fact coach keeps saying it's an open competition, and remember, Telesco is a proven moron who drafts / hires players that don't work out. And remember, the team spoke and already said they'd rather have AOC than Garoppolo, who himself is obviously a better QB than Minshew.
My question to you though is how you thought AOC played his last few games, bec I saw promising ball placement and budding anticipation. Just my amateur view. I would ignore his first few games bec it looked like the play-calling was just wacky and run-centric (new interim coaching and team chaos).
I also do want to present the thesis that Tom Brady is likely hanging around the building there, given the "discounted minority stake" (what's the discount for if not to be involved). AOC seems like a much more interesting project to a TB than Gardner Minshew, given AoC's play style. Imagine what watching film with TB or having him advise you does for his growth.

We don't want to acknowledge this but race place a major role in how people view QBs . Tons of confirmation Bias intentional or not. Taints the view of QB's. Flaws for some QB's are simply overlooked.
when the season ends the podcasters and mock draft and media types start talking mostly overwhelmingly are white men. And they tend to be glass half full for white QB's and glass half empty for black QB's. They simply can't view them as QB's. No matter how historically good a black QB is.
In 20 years of NFL drafting i looked at fair data on who pans out and who doesn't
In 20 years of drafting from 2002 to 2022 ... 59 white QB was drafted in the 1st and 2nd round. Of those 59 QBs only 20 panned out.
In that same time period 25 African American QB's was drafted in the first and 2nd round. Of those 25 QBs 18 of them panned out.
My measuring stick was 3 part...
1 did they win a playoff game (THIS tells you team success)
2 Did the team sign them to a 2nd contract (THIS tells you did the front office believe in them and felt they was franchise Qb's)
3 Did they make a probowl / all pro team / win a major award (this is a popularity contest, but tells us how we view these QBs)
So you had to make ONE of this marks to pan out
So based on that African American QB's panned out 72 % of the time compared to white QB's panning out 33% of the time
When i looked in the later rounds this number moved the needle even more.
Is this a gotcha moment that i am trying to say African American QB's are better? no... but the reality of this in contrast to the way these conversations go in the "draft season".. the anonymous scouts. And the negative takes for African American QB's compared to white QBs relative to WHO is actually panning out is INSANE. And at some point we aren't be honest. Or we have to admit the conversation isn't honest.
So every year when you see all these people that seem to take it personnel if people view a black QB as a high round draft choice this is the culture. Who has the mic at this time of year? The season ends and we are told what we saw wasn't real. They simply don't believe they can play and they go thru mental gymnastics to tell us what we saw on the field isn't what we saw. Infact this is so deep that it spawns this sub culture where even in the face of African American QB's playing so well RIGHT AWAY they created phrase to mask it like >> "NFL teams will watch film and figure him out".. .or better yet " he did good but he will sophomore slump"
It is BRUTALLY critical to white males to make it a POINT that black men can't play QB. .... Why is that?
Why after a year of a record 14 African American starting QB's in 2023 that it is a all out full court press to get ride of all black QB's.. . get ride of Dak Presscott (top 10 QB).. get ride of Tua (Top 10 QB)... get ride of Geno Smith (decent game manager)... Get ride of Russell wilson (that happened)... Get Ride of Justin Fields (that happened) ... Fingers over the "get ride of " button on Deshaun Watson , Bryce Young, Kyler Murray, Jalen Hurts, .... Even the crap these SAME ppl say about Lamar Jackson
It is time to really look at track records and calling people out. and stop pretending these views don't have a trend....Especially when you see who is actually panning out and who isn't. When black QB's have to be historically good just to be considered "ok".. and a white QB has to be absolutely so overwhelmingly bad or terrible JUST for people to admit they are below average..
When 60% of football fans can watch the same all 22 as anyone else. And have been watching football for 40 plus years, yet we are told we don't know what we are seeing. And our reality is real and yours isn't.
Do i think Penix is Dan Marino? no he is has easy to see flaws. But so does all of these QB's... we can see the flaws in some and not others and it is suspect.
Play this back in 18 months and won't shock me to see the reality of WHO is panning out continue to trend in that direction. Why I don't know, I just know that it is. I just know that we aren't honest in these conversations.

So for me i don't view it as calling a whole segment of people racist. what i am saying is the world view is glass half full for those we relate too and glass half empty for those we don't.
It is a pattern; I have watched every snap of the top 7 or 8 QB's in this draft back to 2009. (that i can get my hands on.)... and it is a pattern.
The offseason takes... the pattern of when the season ends.
No looking at it at all right?
Can you find in the Algorithm where phrases like "they will look at film and figure him out" is ever used to rationalize a white QB who has played well early? anyone saying that said QB will "sophomore slump?" .. This part of the Culture of this country. When certain groups get the mic, they simply don't view thsoe they don't relate too with the same optimism. ... EVEN WHEN reality is polar opposite.
This isn't a fair take? that isn't saying "omg racist" .. that is saying the confirmation bias is present. Even in sports where it is repeated same thing every season.... optimism for some and pessimism for others... i don't think that is racist per say. I do think it is bias.

      59 white
      25 african american
33% of white qbs met the 3 FAIR data points of if this QB panned out
I did atempt too use things like yards and TD scored. Or just do the math and add up total production. But then i wasn't trying to measure who was better. I was looking at reasonable objective views of "did this guy pan out.
1 did they make a probowl
2 did they get extended to a new contract
3 did they win a playoff game
that tells us the general opinions of them
That tells us if the team believed in them
      did they have TEAM success.
      And the data is overwhelming
33% of white QBs in that time period 2002 to 2022 panned out.... compared to 72% of African American QB's
Again this isn't a measure of WHO is better... this is simply taking that data and placing is side by side with the negative narratives that always surround Black QB's and the POSITIVE takes on white QB's relative to the reality of WHO is panning out.
That is all the context needed to ask a have a reasonable conclusion that there is bias.
The culture surrounds everything in society. Sports is no different... the Media, the NFL decison makers, Pod casters, You tubers.. overwhelmingly trend in this direction... black QB's are risky.. white QBs are safe (almost regardless of film in some cases)
Now it is getting better and that is good. But the REASON it is better is because it is become harder and harder to support these negative narratives in good faith.... NOW more people can visualize different types of people being successful.... again i don't really believe it is "racist" per say.... Some people "those with the Mic" don't feel optimistic about black QB's... there is a doubt there. .. there is a "wait to embrace" there.
I think objectively you make all these players "grey" and you couldn't tell what nationality a player is.. and draft positions would alter.... it is just confirmation bias at this point.
i mean youi said it out of your own mouth (keyboard)... ONLY 3 good black QB's drafted in the first round in the last 23 years?.... YOU SERIOUSLY typed that as a responds... when we have 3 in JUST 2020 alone

Did you watch any of the ASU game, that one is even uglier than the Michigan game. They blitzed the hell out of him and he was downright awful. If ASU had any offense they would have won that game.
He has some special skills, unfortunately those skills are in an area that is very low sucess rate in 2024 NFL, deep outside the numbers. Look at air yards per attempt in todays NFL. Mahomes averaged 6.5 air yds per attempt last season.

Penix has a decent long ball, but the reason it won't translate to the NFL is because his receivers won't cheat *as much* separation and he will have to navigate pressure - something he can't do

Saints, Vikings, Rams, and Broncos all tried to trade into top 10 to get Penix and Penix went number 8. You should find a new job and never do player evaluations again in your life.

Remember when a team traded to 1st overall for Bryce Young, even though I said he would stink?
      Yikes, buddy

@@pbfg I hope you are being sincere, because I wasn't joking. Also Penix will not get past Raiders, Vikings, Rams. He's the most pro ready qb in the draft. Could start week one for a lot of teams. You obviously did not watch anything outside of the Natty. He was under siege because they had no run game against the best D line in college football. That Texas game was no fluke. He shredded them, and avoided sacks left and right.
