Trent Reznor recounts a story of Kurt Cobain visiting the studio when he was recording The Downward Spiral. Cobain commented, "you have such beautiful songs, why do you fuck them up with computers?" to which Reznor responded, "that's the point". you could stop this song back to a 3 part a capella and it would still have this beautiful harmonic fragility. punk was the armour constructed around it.
