- Transformers Combiner Wars gave us some new, never-before-seen combiners, including Optimus Maximus! Formed from six previously non-combining Autobots, this behemoth must have been a nightmare for the Decepticons. Captain Kyle reviews all of them and the combined form.
Optimus Maximus comprises Battle Core Optimus Prime, Ironhide, Prowl, Sunstreaker, Mirage, and Hot Rod. These Autobots are heroes in their own rights (yes, even Hot Rod), but together, they can form the short-torso combiner to kick Megatron and his evil followers to the curb. Well, if they didn’t turn around and make a bunch of Decepticon combiners. Sort of. Captain Kyle examines all six figures to see if they could combine with your collection. (See what I did there?)

The Titans Return Cosmos can attach to Mirage as a shield in arm mode or leg mode. It isn't officially intended but the functionality is inherited from the Scrounge that was in the Computron set.

yeah it's still crazy to me we haven't gotten a new scrounge. glad we at least got one in a set that didn't need to include him.

I only have the Sunstreaker, got it from engineer hoist in Baltimore. He's ok, nice alt mode. It was fun to see this combiner, great review!
It is now headcanon that Hot Rod is the chest as punishment for the Transformers Movie
I think its the first time a see a review of these toys and i own them since they were released😂 was nice actually
I took my bc Optimus and added the nova prime upgrade kit because that's what I thought of seeing him, made a fantastic nova prime in the end. I use the regular Optimus for the Optimus maximus combiner. I'd like to get a regular Optimus with the idw upgrade kit, that looks really good too.
Me to it's s great kit for that figure I think it's better then the nova prime legacy did even with the DNA upgrade kit for it doesn't beat it
They are my very first Transformers toys back when they're cheaper and what makes me a Transformers fan nowadays. Still love these fun mess even they get surpassed by today's figures.

We did get a traditional Ultra Magnus in Combiners War. It was the leader class figure. It even came with a tiny white Ultra Magnus that stored in it's chest. It was a homage to the comic where his armor got destroyed and revealed he was a white Optimus underneith the whole time.
As for this White prime it's just a excuse to repaint it from the original prime colors.This lime had the most number of repaints out of all the lines to date. It was so bad that every limb bot was repainted at least 6 times. Theyy weren't even given a new head sculpts for their repaints it was that lazily done.
And you're lucky with your hotrod staying in place in combine mode. He was notorious for not staying in the chest. Most people had to add something to the pegs to thicken them enough to get him to stay on there.
That's the wrong Magnus, the CW Magnus is a homage to his IDW comic counterpart.
the little guy inside CW Magnus is Minimus Ambus from IDW, not a white Optimus
I actually picked up 2 of these guys so I could customize a Thunderclash and a Nova Prime... For the Thunderclash custom, I bought a few 3D printed parts, did some weapons swapping, a head swap, and I think I bought a Toyhax conversion decal set for the final touches... Oh, and I also split the SND Magnus upgrade kit between him and CW Motormaster, to give both a bit better proportions and height...
For the Nova Prime version, I bought the Toyhax decals and also the SND conversion upgrades, making him much more proportionate and full-on leader class size... and with those fully posable and articulated wings, he is freaking awesome!!!
In general, I actually enjoyed the CW line, despite the insane amount of repaints, some wonky looking combined modes, and the need for lots of upgrade kits to tweak them, although I did enjoy getting the upgrade kits and custom tweaking the bots... part of the fun for me...! 😅
Definitely enjoyed your video review of these figures, and if you want the second gun for the Optimus, I have a couple of them somewhere, and I'd be happy to send it to you, if you'd like, Kyle... no charge. I don't need it anyway, I just need to find the storage container that figure is in and it's yours... just let me know.
This was the only Combiner Wars set I had in full, some of the moulds were...interesting...
In vehicle mode Ironhides fist thing clips onto the truck bed giving him a canopy like Trailbreaker.
Hm Hotrods spoiler looks like a robot gremlin with a hockey helmet. He kind of feels like an afterthought with the off size and the placement on the chest that reminds me of a ice cube tray. Other than that I like the set. Hotrod on his own is cool enough. Maybe if they would have chosen Bumblebee or another small vehicle transformer it would have made more sense to have that as a chest car.
with the red CW optimus prime, it's a nice homage to optimus ultra mode in energon. specially you paint the matrix chamber on the chest a bit.

White Prime is fine, it’s just as G1 as red glowing, gold or just grey colored bots. The best would be color negative versions of Ultra Magnus, Cyclonus and Wreckgar.

In the G1 episode they used Wind charger's magnetic field to hold "Menasor" together.
I have CW devastator, the g2 Superion and menasor, the g1 Bruticus, Sky Reign, Defensor and Victorion.
Super pissed that i have 4/5 of Orthia but cant get greenlight for like, less than a months rent 😂

Were the bots on that mission to infiltrate the Decepticons and "Masquerade" as Menasor... I never understood WHY Hasbro couldn't have just put those figures out as "Optimus Maximus" or, as an homage to the episode itself, "Masquerade" or Maximus Prime...
I actually made custom versions of Windcharger, using the Deadend/Streetwise/Prowl mold, Jazz, also using the Deadend+ mold, Sideswipe, repainting an extra Sunstreaker, and of course, the CW standard Mirage and Optimus Prime...

A third party company needs to make an updated figure of this character.
The inner bot was Minimus Ambus and he was wearing the Magnus Armour, that figure is technically not Ultra Magnus 🤷🏻♂️
I can never get the Hotrod car to stick in the Magnus chest... it just won't stay there!!

The combiner wars line didn’t age too well. I look back and think how bad they were other than Devastator.
I’ve never played with a combiner wars figure but the plastic looks so bad, almost like a beach toy or something
I like the feel of it more than the newer ones
But objectively it is worse
Optimus Maximus highlights the best and worst of Combiner Wars. The Scramble City design philosophy emphasizes every limb can be played. And that is showcased here were any retooled Autobot can be an arm or a leg. Unfortunately, the limbs range from Ok to mediocre. Ironhide = OK. Prowl and Sunstreaker = Mediocre. Yeah, I call my BC OP Major Magnus and his combined form Ultra Magnus. An all white OP was a good recolor. I would have liked a black and gold version too. The biggest draw back is they didn't bring in more Decepticons to even things out. It was like 2 Autobot combiners for every 1 Decepticon.
I think the helicopter and pick up truck were A class molds. APC and Air Raid were B tier.
