I mean Ariana did sing the high part in their whistle harmony .. during the "San-ta" whistle Mariah went to a F6 whereas Ari went to a G#6 ... Ari did a C7 in imagine which was not phrased (like the G#6 "Santa" is here). The G#6 here is only half a note lower and fits melodically better than a random C7 would've (C7 would've probably sounded out of tune/sharp) But overall, I do think that throughout the song she didn't try to overpower or overshadow Mariah and clearly wanted to give her her Moment and not take anything away from her. Mariah has always been a huge idol to her so it was an honour for her to be on stage with her.

But yes i think Ariana was holding back little bit but at the same time it was probably a stylist choice by Mariah maybe she didn't want too much happening as its not a Ballard its suppose to be a fun Christmas song.
