    So weapon class allows for more attacks, parrys, and what not. It can get kind of crunchy especially when used with Fighting Capability. You did really well man. I wrote it and I still make mistakes. It's hard to reprogram our BX or BECMI assumptions in the game.
    Great video man. Seems like you had a good time and that makes me really happy to see.

      And combat-wise, in chainmail, the initiative was for who got to move first, and then everything was simultaneous. Of course, you can go with the more common way, which is that side does everything first and side B does everything after.

      Thanks so much for putting this out. I've wanted to play with the LBBs, but this ruleset is so much more convenient. You did a great job with it. I think it'll replace Whitebox FMAG for my solo sessions

    Initiative is one of the most homebrewed proceedures among OSR systems! Here is how I like to handle it currently:
    Phase based initiative:
    0- Declaration: Not everyone likes to handle declaration beforehand, but I think it's important to set the current state of the fiction. In my case, I like to always describe the enemies intention first and keep the players in a reactive playstyle, much like the rest of the game where you describe the situation and the players make their move.
    1- Movement: Winning side moves, then losing side moves. During this phase, combatants may also elect to charge and resolve their attack immediately or choose to remain stationary and immediately fire with a missile weapon AFTER their allies are done moving.
    2- Missile: Winning side shoots, then losing side shoots. I also like to include low level spells (level 1 or 2) going off in this phase as well. Always remember shooting while in melee is not possible and that shooting INTO melees is risky and might hit your allies. (And yes, stationary shooters get to shoot both in the movement phase and in this one)
    3- Melee: Winning side strikes, then losing side strikes. So far the most complex of resolutions in the book, considering the amount of parameters you might choose to factor into the situation... Personally, I like to keep things simple in grouped melees and have combatants generally strike at random targets as far as group vs group is concerned. But in duels regarding man vs man (1v1 battles), it might help to spice things up with weapon vs armor modifiers and weapon class parry shenanigans! When in doubt, always keep in mind that longer weapons usually strike first in the engagement, and that if they fail to kill the shorter weapon wielder, the smaller weapon will attack first in the following rounds!
    4- Magic: Winning side casts, then losing side casts. This is where the big boy magic happens... Anything beyond the first 2 levels of spells pop off in this phase. It's important to keep in mind that magic-users can get their declared spellcasting ruined if they take any form of damage or if they are engaged in melee!
    5- Morale: If necessary, roll the morale of hirelings, npcs and enemies at this point. This will determine their intent in the following round.
    Anyway, regardless of which OSR system you pick, I like to think that initiative is essentially directly tied to which side has the edge in a round! Remember, it is never the case where one side gets to act while the other remains static and clueless (unless they are surprised, I guess!)... A combat round, specially one with back-and-forth phased initiative, is basically more or less simulating events happening at the same time, except that some actions are set to happen a bit faster than others AND the side winning initiative will often execute their declared intent with an edge!

      Nice: like you mixed Chainmail and Judges Guild in a pot to get it just right. Our group usually performs a summoning, returning Prussian officer von Reisswitz to corporeal form for initiative rulings. Anything less, and the group starts getting bored and comparing the game to the sit and wait of 5e (I'm so tired of hearing them say that...again). One of the players is a translator and also has a van, so gotta keep him happy, no matter what.

    Funny question about something that came up while I was reading the Wight Box rules regarding Fighting Capability... The book mentions that a level 3 fighter attacking an heroic foe (HD 4+) strikes with a -1 penalty because his fighting capability is Hero -1... This stroke me as really weird and funny because would this mean that a level 2 fighter would strike that same foe with a +1 bonus because his fighting capability is 2 men +1?!?! Despite a level 2 fighter being supposed to be weaker than a level 3 fighter in combat?! I dunno... I can get behind striking multiple times equal to your HD against non-heroic foes but these little modifiers beside the fighting capabilities have some really weird interactions, unless I am getting something wrong!!

    • @Scutifer_Mike
      @Scutifer_Mike  25 днів тому +1

      @@leonardoaquino3669 okay this confused me as well. According to my understanding: level 2 fighter makes 2 attacks with the first at +1. A level 3 fighter makes 3 attacks, the first is at -1. I’ll ask Jon on X.

    • @leonardoaquino3669
      @leonardoaquino3669 25 днів тому

      @@Scutifer_Mike You're absolutely right. When fighting non-heroic enemies, the multiple attacks work nicely with the modifiers... Things only start to get weird when it's a fight between heroic combatants... I found that the only way to fix the confusion is simply ignore the fighting capability modifier in heroic combat! Just have the heroic figures attack once against each other and it should be fine.

    • @leonardoaquino3669
      @leonardoaquino3669 24 дні тому

      I think I finally got it... The thing is that while yes, a level 2 fighter would attack with a +1 (2 men +1) against a heroic foe, the level 2 fighter is eligible to receive multiple attacks from the foe because he is not a hero yet! Now, a level 3 fighter in the other hand, yes he will attack with -1 (Hero -1) BUT he won't be struck multiple times by his heroic foe, because he is a hero! Albeit a weaker one, still a hero!
