He's talking to Anthony Hopkins- one of the very few people who had the cajones to say " no " to my godmother. And saying " no " to Uta Hagen used to be like saying " no " to the Blake Association. 🤣
This enormity of this scene is the true underpinning of this film; thank goodness it was Hopkins and Banderas portraying these characters to deliver it to us
@@catlover1394 Don't be "that" guy. That's literally what every single generation has said about the next since the beginning of time, and yet humanity keeps going forward. Just because you are more familiar with a genre of art doesn't make it superior.
A movie that tells a good Legacy Character story. Hopkins was the (you could view it that way if you like) Zorro from the tv series. While Banderas would be the Zorro of the movies.
@@Wolf10media I assume you mean the Disney series, that starred Guy Williams. I saw a little of it, and now that I think about it, Hopkins portrayal of Diego Dela Vega does kinda resemble William's portrayal.
@@thecowboy9698 this film has elements from other tv series from the classical novels and from other movies of Zorro franchise if i am saying correct. Alejandro was the name of Don Diego's father. The alias of Bernardo that used Don Diego as Alejandro's disguised servant was also the name of Don Diego's mute servant Bernardo. The secret entrance for Zorro's Lair on this film is behind a fire hall exactly like the new world tv series with Duncan Regher.
The movie was about both of them, one retiring as Zorro and the other becoming his successor. Ones coming end, the others origin in becoming the new zorro. Very well done story. Alejandro learned that becoming Zorro isnt just about revenge, but something much more.
This is one the most underrated movies I think. For me it will always hold a special place, it was the first "grown up" film I saw in theatres as a kid with my dad.
@@danender5555 That's often true, but not always. Some movies are underappreciated when they first come out. Even classics like the Big Lebowski, Fight Club or the Shawshank Redemption didn't do very well at the box office. Obviously not saying that Zorro is at that level, but you get my point.
@@ar1sm70 It has nothing to do with the box office whatsoever... If it has, Frozen would be much more "appreciated" than Shawshank Redemption. But you mentioned The Mask of Zorro is one of the most underrated movies. Which is nonsense. It is on the same pile of a thousands other movies and as such it cannot be never "underrated".
I love when Diego grabs Alejandro by the throat like "Alright, I'm not putting up with this, imma bout to school you." Lol And I love how Alejandro thinks he's hot stuff with the sword and whipping it's case across the table. Lmao.
This movie is how you do an origin story and a "Passing of the torch" story all at once! How did Americans forget how to do stories like this?! Imagine the disney star wars movies with rey what's-her-face being this well made!
New generation of woke, talentless, politically correct morons that feel the need to check the diversity boxes instead of trying to produce the best films they can. That's one of the reasons for sure. You see, a tale of two men in quest for revenge against the people who wronged them is way too boring. We need to explore their sexuality. How 'bout we make' em homosexual for some reason. Let's focus on that. Let's make the captain a woman, and a main bad guy black for some reason. That'll give this film an edge.
The Sequel Trilogy was already dead to me since The Force Awakens decided to bring back an Empire vs Rebellion status quo, had Han and Leia break up, and then having Han getting pathetically killed by his own son, and Luke gets zero lines. If it came out in the '80s as a direct sequel to ROTJ, it would've been massacred by fans and critics, and for good reasons, it's absolutely ANYTHING but an organic continuation from where we last left off. And then with TLJ and TROS the writing kept taking a nosedive, getting progressively more nonsensical and infuriating.
Ah back when even unremarkable movies were grate. When the hero had to grow and learn something and was not just born perfect. Good times shame they are gone now.
Just re-watched this again and it's still great. I think it really represents a peak in a certain era of hollywood filmmaking. Great cast, music, action, romance, comedy. I would say it's the perfect form of what kind of film it is.

One of my childhood favorites and it still holds up to me. Up there with The Mummy. Just all around great films. I watched those over and over again on VHS when I was younger.
As an adult this scene is far more inspiring: De La Vega needs Alejandro just as much as Alejandro needs him. De La Vega can not get to Elena on his own, he needs an Ally. Alejandro has the motivation - but he has nowhere to learn the skills from, until De La Vega shows up. And as 2 of them collide again, De La Vega basically proved he is Zorro 1:47 , and he understood how much Alejandro admired him. Alejandro saw how easily he can be beaten and chose to toss his arrogance aside 2:30
And both of those men are impoverished and lost everything Don Diego saw his wife murdered before his eyes and daughter stolen to be raised by his mortal enemy. By the other hand Alejandro saw his brother killed and his best friend getting shot and prisoned by his brother’s killer.
I love rewatching this film. And watching even one scene or two is an absolute treat as well. Hopkins and Banderas were a fantastically cast pair. One is cool, quiet, and calculated. The other is fiery, loud, and aggressive. 🐲✨🐲✨🐲✨
In the novelization, he actually does reflect on that, feeling that it may not be mere coincidence, and that there may be a bit of fate at work that his potential student and successor bares the same name as his father!
“Yes my friend, you would’ve fought very bravely and died very quickly. Then who would avenge your brother?” “I would’ve found a way. I’ve never lost a fight” “Except to a crippled old man just now…”
Some movies are just pure fun to watch, even if they have serious aspects. Raiders of the Lost Ark. The Man Who Would be King. The original Star Wars. And of course, The Mask of Zorro.
Alejandro: i have never lost a fight Diego: except with a crippled old man just now I love how he completely destroyed Alejandro's confidence with just that argument
All depends on who is writing and directing. There have been a few really bad Zorro films (Zorro: The Gay Blade comes to mind). This also why the SW franchise changed so much: too many life-long fans interjecting their own ideas and concepts of how they envision events...which is also why the EU is such garbage compared to the true universe established by Lucas long ago.
@@jeffburnham6611 no brother, the EU was fantastic. It had some crappers like the crystal star but the yuuzhan vong war is one of the best stories ever conceived. The problem is not the actual fans for critiquing the new stuff it's the fact the new stuff sucked ass. The newer movies aside rogue one and the mandalorian have no soul and feel like cash grabs on top of the fact they are used as political tools.
@@GuardianGrarl pin your own insecurities on someone else. Given the date this film was released, it didn't do well at the box office compared to other Zorro movies.
He wasn’t exactly evil as Lt. Bligh in “The Bounty.” His Bligh was tough, overbearing at times. But, in the end, he showed the man’s compassion and exemplary character and seamanship.
Honestly we need Magneto, wolverine, the bear jew, Hugo Stiglitz, the punisher, the league of assassins and batman. Hell bring in Deadshot and El Diablo just to clean things up properly.
This and The Mummy with Brendan Fraser were two absolutely fun movies that came out about the same time. They were a return to the swashbuckling adventure movies like Raiders. Then in a few more years, we got Pirates of the Caribbean. It hasn't been the same since. The Pirates sequels went downhill and it seems adventure movie makers threw their inner child in the basement and locked the door.
It is a masonic saying found in freemasonry aka mystery schools. The whole movie is a allegorical representation of the profane becoming initiated as a neophyte and ultimately gaining the knowledge to become an adept. The black cloak and costume is masonic. Tornado the black stallion brother of pegasus the white steed. Etc etc
I love how Hopkins’s character instantly recognizes the captain as a professional killer. There’s no, “Ah, with that fighting spirit, you can take him!” crap. He knows if Alejandro rushes out there, the captain will dispatch him within seconds.
This movie was a rarity among action flicks. In any other movie, the sword play would be limited to 1 or 2 blows per mook. The good fight choreography would be reserved for the final showdown and probably the flirty duel with Zeta Jones. But this movie took the high road and the director decided that even the mooks would get some decent fight choreography.
What I loved about this movie is that they honored Guy Williams and the 1950’s and 1960’s Zorro by taking the original Don Diego de la Vega and bringing him into the modern day and passing the mask over.
God dammit, even though I've watched this scene an ungodly amount of times, it still gives me chills. There will never be a Zorro film as good as this one. Martin Campbell was such an incredible director in his heyday. Really hope he has a return to form one day.

An excellent movie, didn't care much for the sequel. This was great. Another great is the original with Tyrone Power and Basil Rathbone. Watch both for a good weekend at the movies.
I can't believe I've never seen this movie before today. It was fantastic and RIGHT up my Count of Monte Cristo, Scarlet Pimpernel, Batman loving self.
I was at least 7 or 8 when I first watched this movie when I was little that's when I started loving and liking Zorro he's one of the men who I always looked up too
I love how Diego remembered somthing as small as gifting his medallion to the brothers, when so soon after his world was broken. I think had alihandrio not been one of those ‘‘em brother ms Diego would have killed him to a avenge theme
People really don't know what 'underrated' means. There is no metric by which Antonio Banderas (nor any of the others on that list of yours) is 'underrated'. He's fantastic, and everyone knows he's fantastic. That's not underrated. It's like saying Mel Brooks is an underrated comedic actor/director/screenwriter. Karl Urban is an 'underrated' guy. He constantly churns out fantastic performances, but his name isn't widely recognized outside of their fandoms. Sam Rockwell is another one. You might as well call Tom Hanks or Cruise underrated actors. Julia Roberts and Meryl Streep underrated actresses. Abe Lincoln and FDR underrated presidents.
At 1:49, I believe the sword fell behind Alejandro, so how did it magically appear from the sky for Diego to catch it? 😁 I know, it’s just a movie. One that I love. Watching it again soon after this.
The intention is that the sword flies up into the air and DIego catches it, so it later mirrors Alejandro doing the same to Captain Love on the elevator, only this time continuing the motion and impaling him. In this case, it's goofed a bit and the sword somersaults out of Antonio Banderas' hand onto the floor, but because it goes directly behind his body, it's mostly obscured and unless you're actively looking for it, it could be seen as flying straight up at speed. There's also the element of safety, because instead of flying up, it might have gone straight into Anthony Hopkin's face. In the later fight this wasn't a problem because there was a giant wooden beam between them.
This scene is equally dramatic and funny to me, but that's part of the brilliance of this movie. The whole movie is greatest drama well seasoned with a great sense of humor.
Hopkins has always been excellent at portraying characters with dignity and quiet presence.
I wish they gave him a little more to do in the MCU.
Yeah he was perfect as Odin and they definitely underutilized him in the Thor films

I will answer by asking you a question. What do consider to be the most valuable thing in your life?
*"He is trained to kill, you seem trained to drink"*
He wasn't trying to be funny, but it just made me laugh because it was true.
The greatest comedy always reveals truth.
"You would have fought very bravely and died very quickly." I loved the follow-up better. XD
“I’ve never lost a fight.”
“Except to a crippled old man just now…”

The humor in this movie give so much charisma to it.
That moment when Alejandro realizes who he's actually talking to....great scene.
He's talking to Odin.
And Hannibal Lecter ✋
This scene has lived in my brain for 20 years.
Sorry but odin was always Zorro to me
He's talking to Anthony Hopkins- one of the very few people who had the cajones to say " no " to my godmother. And saying " no " to Uta Hagen used to be like saying " no " to the Blake Association. 🤣
This enormity of this scene is the true underpinning of this film; thank goodness it was Hopkins and Banderas portraying these characters to deliver it to us
Zorro is quite literally one of the greatest movies ever made. Shame it's so underappreciated.
That's because the new generation prefer weird cartoon's and rap music.
@@catlover1394 Don't be "that" guy. That's literally what every single generation has said about the next since the beginning of time, and yet humanity keeps going forward. Just because you are more familiar with a genre of art doesn't make it superior.

I was shocked at how good of a Zorro that Anthony Hopkins made. I had no idea the movie was really about him.
Hail State
A movie that tells a good Legacy Character story.
Same dude. My dad and I loved this movie too. I remember many Saturdays as a kid rewatching it on VHS.

Antonio Banderas's acting at the end is so superb! Without saying a word, but you can see from his expression "Zorro?".
Always a pleasure to see Sir Hopkins at his game.
Check him out in Meet Joe Black with Brad Pitt
Sir Anthony or Sir Anthony Hopkins - never Sir Surname!
I love the fact that you can see the gears turning on Alejandro's head once he realizes he's talking to the legendary Zorro

Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live: [26] And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
Are you saved? If you died tonight would you go to heaven or hell?
The Gospel, which means the Good News is the news that God Almighty, the Creator came in the flesh as Jesus Christ to take away the sin of the world. The one God is a trinity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. The Son came and laid down his own life to save ours. His sacrifice on the cross paid the price for our redemption with his own blood. On the third day he rose from dead and offers the gift of salvation and forgiveness to those that repent and trust in him. Although God's creation was created perfect, having no death, sickness and disease, the creation became corrupted through Adam and Eve in them disobeying God. In this rebellion the creation became fallen through the curse of sin and mankind became separated from God. This world is fallen, but God offers reconciliation to him through his provision at the cross. Ultimately God will restore his creation to perfection when he returns but those that who reject his offer of redemption will remain condemned by their sins and go to hell.

He needs an allyjandro
And both of those men are impoverished and lost everything Don Diego saw his wife murdered before his eyes and daughter stolen to be raised by his mortal enemy. By the other hand Alejandro saw his brother killed and his best friend getting shot and prisoned by his brother’s killer.

Diego must be thinking something like: "Gee, that's also my late fathers name...!"
In the novelization, he actually does reflect on that, feeling that it may not be mere coincidence, and that there may be a bit of fate at work that his potential student and successor bares the same name as his father!
That last dialogue still gives me goosebumps... Childhood memories...

This movie was a rarity among action flicks. In any other movie, the sword play would be limited to 1 or 2 blows per mook. The good fight choreography would be reserved for the final showdown and probably the flirty duel with Zeta Jones. The fantastic sword that falls to the ground... clip it... then keeps falling from the ceiling. Or maybe, De la Vega is thinking portals....
Yes he is. You didn't watch film carefully. Diego is actually a magician.
WoW....
This scene is so funny I love this movie I love these actors I love the action and the fight scenes
