I loved seeing Alejandro go from being a drunk, to being chaotically bad at being Zorro to being a total badass legendary Zorro. That’s how you do character development.
Exactly! And, it's not like those changes were sudden or out of nowhere, they flowed gradually and in ways that made sense as he learned and experienced more.
3:51 That line is delivered SO perfectly! "Keel'im." Pedro Altamirano had such a small role as this Squad Leader, but my GOD does he make it memorable!
Hey Hollywood, pay attention, THIS is how you make a good action movie! You don't need a ton of CGI or other nonsense, just a good story, decent acting and practical special effects.
Which is an odd thing to say as it's dependent on the kind of story, which will dictate where to use CGI and practical effects. A Superhero movie would and SHOULD have CGI. The funny thing is I could point out action movies that you THINK are using practical effects that are partly CGI. It's a tool like any other. Story, direction and acting are paramount no matter how much or little cgi is used.
Where do you think this movie was made? Bangladesh? They didn't use CGI because the film didn't call for it. It came out the same year as Armageddon. Michael Bay could have used horses instead of spaceships but I don't think it would have had the same effect, pun intended.
@@mattrR678 The cannon is inside the barracks. Its practical usage isn't... ideal. Keeping it loaded is just asking for trouble. This is where they sleep!
4:19 - 4:30 must have been such a fun scene to shot. Love this movie. If they were ever to do a remake of Zorro, it would never come close to this one. Thanks for uploading.
This is such a great movie. There are a few goofy moments and the love story is a little forced, but in the end Banderas and Zeta-Jones end up with great chemistry, Anthony Hopkins and Stuart Wilson are inspired casting choices, and every actor dials in a great performance.
I love this sword fight because it makes the one man against a dozen seem realistic. He moves around using space and small areas to keep from being surrounded and unlike say the last Jedi, you don’t see the guys stood around waiting their turn. I know in reality he would have died but it does it better than most. However if anyone is planning on firing a loaded canon I would advise against standing with your foot on the wheel, it would be something of a grisly death being crushed by a tonne of canon as it recoils backwards.
The way Alejandro is fighting and getting out of tricky Situations rembers me to Captain Jack sparrow 🤔 I could imagine that Disney collected some suggestions from Zorro 🤫🤭
Maybe it’s the nostalgia goggles blinding me to this film’s issues but when it came out it was the perfect film for it’s time, showing us that Hollywood could still Produce an entertaining summer Blockbuster. Never forget the dark age of cinema!
I swear the could have scripted this from a Bugs Bunny cartoon. That last part where they watch the big guy fall down, then turn around . . . Alejandro with a canon. "Surprise, Doc!"
after all these years, at my most desperate moments, I remembered the movie and then this scene: persistence at Alejandro level is my motto nowadays :D
What makes the horse bucking even better is that it makes sense. In the scene before this, we see that it's a pretty wild horse, so it would probably behave that way

Rewatched this scene, and at around 3:00 onwards, he does the same jumping thing (while fighting two men) when he fought Montero and Love as Zorro later on. Aaaaaaaah the details.
Haha what I love is that it was Zorro who attacked these soldiers in their quarters, they didn't do anything wrong, in fact some of these poor slobs were just trying to sleep when Zorro brought their bunks down for no reason and the destroyed the entire building haha.
Let alone how the garrison had to report how they were defeated. They couldn't admit it was one ordinary guy who got lucky a bunch of times, they had to build up Zorro to be a legendary fighter to justify outnumbering him 20:1 and still losing.
