Let's be specific. Attrition means " the process of reducing something's strength or effectiveness through sustained attack or pressure" So an attrition war between India and China will be a blood bath and the rivers will turn red. Both are giant countries with a combined population of 3 billion but China has a huge advantage over India in industrial and technological capacity. Let's hope that we may never have to witness such a war.
Fully agree!! In fact, I was going to write/comment the same thing, but saw your comment... A war of attrition between the 2 most populous nations is a stupid & bloody strategy.
@Shekar @PrintIndia can this series be converted into something similar to MacroSutra or Sankat Suraksha Aur Swami. I feel that format can extract better knowledge and interaction from General Sir.
Ukraine war has shown Technology is important but Conventional Equipment is far more important and Manpower is still very much needed And country size of India Dont need reduction in armed forces size
When he was the commander of indian army of northern section, he was asked by one Nitin Gokale of the print, what is the motive of large armed chinese doing near indian border. He said he doesn’t know the motive of chinese. Now after retirement he is giving all kind of advice. 😂

Sadly, the general could reference European battles from 216 BC to Napolean in the 18th century and beyond, even mentioning Ho Chi Minh of Vietnam, but failed to recount the most consequential attritional war that was ever fought and won by the Marathas against Mughals, because of which he is sitting before the camera in this nation called Bharat. And like the general said, one can switch strategy when conditions change, which is something the Marathas did starting with Peshwa Baji Rao after the success of the attritional war(1660s to 1707). While S Jaishankar was right, It's not as much the Europeans that need to get out of the Eurocentric mindset but us, the Indians. Achieving decoloniality is the biggest non material challenge that Indians can achieve this century.
While I do respect Marathas for their guirella warfighting startegy, calling their startegy adaptable is an exaggeration. Nothing shows their lack of adaptability more than Battle of Panipat where they were demolished despite having overwhelming numerical superiority. I get the need to brag about native rulers, but please keep it grounded in reality and not just mention them anywhere and everywhere.
With all due respect nicolas we i know that we have to have proud on our history but the thing is Marathas brought a new fight style to the table but they were anything but adaptable from that style .....do study battle of Panipat you'll get the point....the thing is it's not only about the strategy at the start it should also evolve during the battle if enemy is able to catch up

The start point - political military aim of war - doesn’t exist with Modi. Aim of EVERYTHING is just winning next election. So, let’s just get him out. External enemy can then be tackled easily.
Lol! Congress will not have any money left for a war, after spending on freebies. It is Modi who spent money on building border roads. Nothing was done in UPA era
Neither of these 3 strategies are realistic in this scenario/context. Annihilation is just not feasible as China is technologically, militarily & economically far superior to India currently. A war of attrition between the 2 most populous nations is a stupid & bloody strategy! And, a strategy of exhaustion (esp. as detailed in your Vietnam example) requires irregular/unconventional/guerrilla warfare tactics -- which is just not feasible a) at 15000ft altitudes!; b) with no air support or QRF; c) with no robust supply chains established, and d) when most of the lines being patrolled are unarmed for a reason(!) In short, none of these strategies will be able to achieve India's goals; any one may annoy China even more, and delay any potential solution even further... The solution here is not military; it needs to be political/diplomatic. Stop with all the jingoism & deal in realities! The economic & human cost of any of these 'strategies' will be so adverse to India, that it automatically renders these 'strategies' unviable & pointless!
