The description on the back of double Russian DVD (which is actually a clear sign of it being a pirated one) has some wacky texting too.
"It's not a fictional movie in the strict sense of word. Spike Lee chosed 4 improvisators, who often made big halls laugh and made up their jokes on the go"
    That's clearly a pirated release.

Learning another languague through movies is actually a legit way. I learned english by playing games and watching movies in english with german subtitles.

I grew up with Jetlag productions and Golden films movies, the movie itself would be sychronized but the songs were still in english so I learned parts of English through that and part through Pokemon 2000 and Mewtwo strikes back that I had on VHS that was in English but had subs in my language xD

In college we were always watching Russian films and cartoons to help with our learning of the language, it definitely helps.
I also have an American friend that play games in Japanese and a Japanese friend that plays them in English.

I think the reason why the label on the Israeli release didn't fit the tape is that it was actually made for the beta release (which the front label saying beta confirms). Beta had a more narrow and taller label!

I actually had one of those PNY Ghostbusters flash drive sticks! The mock up is accurate, just a little more glossy than the real thing. Yes, it was just a normal boring stick with no Ghostbusters markings on it. As I recall, the movie took up almost the entire drive and the quality was more VHS than DVD. If I ever find mine I’ll send it your way.

Phelan! I still have my UK GHOSTBUSTERS two-in-one VHS cassette that I bought back in... um... 1990 or '91... I think.
There's absolutely no mention of it anywhere on the inlay card or tape, but in between the two films, you get the first episode of Columbia's BATMAN & ROBIN from 1949! And that's how my black n' white superhero collection began! :)
Perhaps your UK cassette includes it too!

Sony was trying to make Blu-Ray a selling point on the PS3 in the same way that the PS2 was marketed as a cheap DVD player early on in that console's life. It makes sense that Sony would allow Atari to include the Ghostbusters movie on Blu-Ray as a bonus for the PS3 version of the game.

SECAM (Séquentiel couleur à mémoire) was a system that was developed by the French, hence its name, and it predates PAL and NTSC a little bit. One good thing about Japanese imports, either it be VHS or DVD, is that you can play them back on any VCR or region-free modified DVD player sold in the US without using any equipment to modify it since Japan and the US both use NTSC. Standard Blu-ray Discs are Region A for both Japan and the US, whereas DVDs sold in Japan are Region 2 NTSC, considering that DVDs sold in Europe are Region 2 PAL. Most movies released on PAL format DVD, are going to have a slightly shorter runtime, as compared to the same movie release on NTSC format DVD, meaning that the PAL format is slightly sped up a little bit. This is due to the fact that PAL format DVDs run at 25 frames per second, whereas NTSC format DVDs run at 29.97 frames per second. At least movies on Blu-ray all run at 23.976 frames per second.

Man... I would LOVE to send you some South African versions of the film, Phelous, especially since our clamshells look completely different front any I've seen on this video (as in the plastic part, I dunno about the insert. I'd have to track it down). but I think postage would be a bitch and a half to pay for :( and I'm super bummed because I really legit would love to send you some.
Maybe after I move I can poke around and see what I can do. I can't guarantee it'd get to you because our portage is such ass but I legit love these comparison videos as well as a rundown of your formats.
Don't hold me to that but I'll try and maybe next year I can figure something out or something.

19:58 Always nice to see a Polish edition get some kind of attention. In case you're looking for more regional editions like that, Phelous, I know a few places where you can get more Polish variants, like the 2005 release, the Blu-rays and even some re-releases/reissues of the 1999 release.
As for the VHS releases, there weren't that many in Poland. In the early 90's the official Polish movie and home video distributor at the time, ITI Home Video basically imported the UK releases of both movies and even the first 4 volumes of the Real Ghostbusters and simply slapped some narrated translation and a few legal notices on all of those. And that was pretty much it for VHS releases in Poland, really.
Also, get this. Those UK-imported first 4 volumes of RGB with a Polish narration slapped on them that we got - that was the ONLY way you could experience this cartoon in Poland before it became available on Netflix and later UA-cam. Can you imagine?

About 10 years ago, right around the height of the MP3/portable media player craze, entertainment companies were trying desperately to fight off the death knell of physical media (mostly cds, at the time). A few of them began testing the waters by putting albums on sd cards hoping that they could sell as "the best of both worlds," being digital and physical. I was working retail at the time, so I got to see how well that went (straight into a landfill). I never actually saw any of the movie flash drives, though. They must have come and gone faster than the sd card idea.

4.49 - as a lifelong (U.K. based) 'Ghostbusters' fan, I never fully knew why the 'No Ghosts' logo was sometimes flipped horizontally on merchandise. In the depths of my mind I'm sure I've seen some U.S. merchandise with the flipped logo, and always thought it was just down to 'being creative' for mercandising, though I have no doubt the "has to be the right way round" explanation is the correct one.

I have the UK variant of the 2005 2-DVD combo/boxset (26:08). I feel Ernie Hudson got quite a poor treatment on this package as he isn't shown at all and his name only appear in tiny prints in the credits of Ghostbusters II... Even the summaries of the movies omit poor ol' Winston.
On a sidenote I find it odd/funny that while the first film comes with quite a lot of bonus stuff like a commentary, a photo gallery and so forth, the only bonus stuff on Ghostbusters II is a couple of Real Ghostbusters episodes...
Not a bad thing though IMO, Phelous talking of this series is what got me interested in the franchise in the first place and it's the only time I've come across Real Ghostbusters episodes on DVD.
Now I'm curious as to what Phelous thinks of these episodes. Maybe I'll suggest reviewing them in case he ever needed ideas for yet another Ghostbusters-related video ? 😁😉

Criterion never released their discs outside of the US. So other companies would license the material for other countries. Mainly Japan. There's a few releases over there with the criterion content but released by the original distributors (Blade Runner is a notable one).

I own a different Japanese VHS with the same kind of packaging and like, I could be wrong since I'm just basing this on two VHS tapes, but I think that little plastic box was just the standard VHS packaging in Japan. IDK! Either way seeing all the different regional variants is super neat!

  • @LokiDuck
    @LokiDuck 6 років тому +1

Ha the Russian title is pretty simple as it basically translate to "Hunters of ghosts" or Ghost Hunters.
I like the catchphrase though as it says "While someone is struggling with cockroaches and insects, they are clearing the city of ghosts."
2 has "The ghosts are back and in vain!" ???
Also the age rating seems to be for all audience as it lists as "от 0" aka 0+ XD
Hilariously despite Ivan being a Russian name because Russian doesn't have I, Ivan Reitman's name is translated as Айван (Ай Basically makes the eye sound meaning it's Eye-van) when Ivan is actually Иван (И makes an e sound so the name is pronounced Ee-van). It's weird but it also makes sense as Russian is more Phonetic in Russian, so they are spelling it based on how it sounds. This might explain why Dan Aykroyd's name is spelled differently on different copies of the film, because they weren't exactly sure how to spell it.
The blu-rays being bootlegs isn't that surprising as they have a major bootleg problem, especially with cds.

I have the promotional GB2 VHS, like the VHS that would play at a rental store for advertising. Can't find a lot of info in it though.

I don't recall it in the last video, and I didn't see it in this video, but do you have the 1996 VHS boxed set of the two movies?

I'd be curious to see the quality of The Real Ghostbusters on that japanese 4k blu-ray release. Did they clean it up at all? btw does anyone know if Real Ghostbusters got alternate-language dubs?

Really interesting video! I love obscure media formats. Was the Wii version of the game different from the PS3 and Xbox versions story-wise?

I actually learned to speak English by watching movies and tv with subtitles. Playstation 1 videogames also helped.

Brit version offered for rental at Porcupine Mall in Timmins, Ontario? (At least that’s the Porcupine Mall that shows up first on a search.) Strange.
